I think it's funny that they specify accidental fatality. Apparently hit-and-runs don't count.

Makes me wonder what the last non-accidental death was. PC seems to be a rather utopian (well maybe not quite) city from what we've seen so far, and I get a feeling that an incident like a purposeful vehicular murder would be related to something big.

And aren't hit and runs still accidental?

Yeah, that was the wrong term. You know what I meant.

I don't think this article is completely worthless. Particularly the part about identity information.

We learned from the gatehouse 24 logs that there is some sort of biometric identification "key" that exists in perplex city (remember: <<Passive Badge: Present>> <<Emotional State: 15%>>).

It wouldn't be surprising to think that all PPC residents have this passive badge installed, so the fact that no identifying information survived the crash is pretty interesting. Also (and this might have already been said), whomever stole the cube was able to disable their passive badge as well. Perhaps the victim had his badge disabled which is why the car sensors didn't pick him up?

All we're missing is: "And as the pedestrian was hit, his head jerked back... and to the left. Back... and to the left."

or: The badge wasn't disabled by the thief, it was never there in the first place. IE: Someone from our world crossed over and stole the cube. Possibly someone from our world was killed in the car crash, too.

Not necessarily. The Gatehouse could be sensing it remotely, as for instance by using infrared to see blood rushing to the face, very sensitive microphones to monitor heartbeat, very powerful computers to analyze expression, that sort of thing.

There is a Transverse Road in New York. I don't know if that's at all significant.

Does the fact that Wave Length and Transverse are the road names possibly mean anything, or am I reading too much into this?

Probably just more background info highlighting the PC culture of science, IMHO.

More evidence (driverless vehicles, proximity sensors, etc.) that PPC is more technologically advanced than Earth.
Also plays into the 'SciFi' spec that was being disputed some threads ago.

re: identification... is it possible there's a whole underclass who don't have id's implanted, thus not having access to work/welfare, &c... (a common enough scifi element...)

also possible it could be tied to religion, the Recon Eight, etc (either cos some religious dont like being implanted - mark of the beast, or cos the Recon.s deliberately remove their identification in order to carry out terrorist activities -- or a combination of the two)

and still not sure how advanced their technology actually is; we already have driverless vehicles in prototype, and proximity sensors are standard on many expensive cars these days... it's been specced (is that a word?) that their tech took a slight leap because of the cube, but may not be particularly advanced

and finally, the death has to be either a suicide or a murder, it sounds like _accidents don't happen_

passive badge means just that, passive. its biometric information. whats meant is that the guy had no id on him, and was pulped. high speed. you ever see a deer thats been hit by a truck going 200 miles per hour? you get a fine liquid spray. teeth are the largest pieces of bone you will find, often. and the whole point of auto cars (which are WAY beyond just experimental here. they work, they work well, but the public wont accept them yet, and it costs to retrofit roads) is to go at amazing high speeds.

Pleasant.

My opinion? Just backstory.

What kind of truck can go at 200 mph?

I find it intriguing that there was no passive ID. I like the spec that it was "one of us" that crossed to their world... It would explain the accident much better, as well as why there was no passive ID. Occam's would point to this being the most satisfactory answer. (Personally, given the nature of the theft of the cube, I think the idea of "earthman in Perplexcity" is less questionable than "their native ID system, assumably biometric in nature, failed inexplicably")

/me turns on the spooky Unsolved Mysteries theme song

Doodoobee doo bee doo BEE doodoobee doo bee doo BEE

I like that spec! How could the crossover have happened? Is there a little transpondertransporter thingie like in StarTrek that we can zap with, or something else?

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question647.htm

this truck can do well over 200mph Cool anyway...

it's been specced that we could be in a temporal paradox and that we will steal the cube near the end of the game and that will cause them to start looking to earth for the cube. This of course requires some type of time shift to occur either in our communincations with perplexcity OR just before/after the cube is stole a causalty loop must occur.
