[PUZZLE]Contact with Raziel!

Woah. I just got contacted by Raziel. Read on.

It started when Jibril and Mikhail entered #angels...

Quote:

<Jibril> Our cousins won't like these delays, Mikhail
<Mikhail> What does that matter?
<Mikhail> Their participation in this matter is a joke, and you know this, Jibril.
<Jibril> They identified Raziel's clue sooner than Raguel...
<Mikhail> They are not needed, Jibril.
<Mikhail> Furthermore, they are a liability for just that reason!
<Jibril> Perhaps.
<Mikhail> There is no perhaps, Jibril. They discover too much!
* Dinnerstar is now known as Darkstar
<Jibril> We will talk of this later, Mikhail.
<Jibril> Hello Darkstar.
<Darkstar> Mikhail, we are serious
<Darkstar> Hello Jibril
<Mikhail> You-
<Mikhail> Jibril, handle your Cousins.
* Mikhail has quit IRC (Quit: )
<Darkstar> I see he still thinks we aren't needed
<Jibril> Let us speak of other things, Cousin.
<Darkstar> Of course. Mikhail has his reasons
<Darkstar> So how are things going with the investigation?
<Jibril> Going slowly.
<Darkstar> As always, heh
<Darkstar> Have the clues found with Raziel been deciphered?
<Jibril> Raguel is proving slow once again.
<Jibril> If Raziel's note is an example of your industry, I suspect that once Raguel hands the papers over, you will have it solved in short order.
<Darkstar> I should hope so
<Darkstar> They just need to be able to trust us, and remove some of their pride
<Jibril> Pride is something in plenty in a place where none belongs, unfortunately.
<Darkstar> Yed
<Darkstar> *Yes
<Darkstar> Has Raguel indicated when he is going to show us the papers?
<Jibril> He keeps asking for more time. I believe he carries more pride than he even knows.
<Darkstar> It would seem so
<Darkstar> We just need a chance, I suppose
<Jibril> Yes, which I am working on giving you.
<Darkstar> Thankyou again
<Jibril> Of course
<Darkstar> I heard that Mikhail allowed 'someone' to go into Hell, forcing Malik to give up his guard
<Darkstar> Why would he do such a thing?
<Jibril> He did what?
<Darkstar> He forced Malik to give up his guard of Hell, and allowed someone to go in and out.
<Darkstar> Completely covertly.
<Jibril> That is unheard of.
<Darkstar> Not anymore.
<Jibril> He has been acting strangely lately.
<Darkstar> I was talking to Malik the other day and he told me, I was shocked.
<Darkstar> I'm also confused as to why Mikhail would want to do such a thing
<Jibril> Interesting.
<Jibril> I shall address the issue to Mikhail.
<Darkstar> Please.
* Raziel invites you to join #purgatory

Thinking WHOAMG I entered #purgatory.

Quote:

* Now talking in #purgatory
<Darkstar> Raziel!
<Raziel> Do not tell him
<Darkstar> Ok
<Raziel> 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100001 01110010 01100101 00100000 01101111 01101110 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110010 01101001 01100111 01101000 01110100 00100000 01110000 01100001 01110100 01101000 00001101 00001010
<Darkstar> How can I follow this path more?
<Raziel> 64 6f 20 6e 6f 74 20 67 69 76 65 20 75 70 20 74 68 65 20 66 69 67 68 74
<Darkstar> I wont.
<Darkstar> We won't.
<Raziel> eW91IG11c3QgZmluZCB0aGUgb25lIHdobyBraWxsZWQgbWU=
<Darkstar> We are trying to.
<Darkstar> Can you tell us who did it?
<Raziel> b49b1b81f5aa6dcb46a8cf281e313eb0
<Raziel> chetngbel fuvoobyrgu vf gehgu
<Raziel> CRwZXdj75se5s
<Raziel> llA sU htiW eB doG yaM
<Darkstar> Of course
* Raziel sets mode: +k truth
<Darkstar> Truth?
* Raziel has left #purgatory

The binary translates to:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

you are on the right path

The next was hex. This was:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

do not give up the fight

The next message was base64 encypted. This decrypted to:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

you must find the one who killed me

I didn't know how to decode the next message, but the one after was a ROT, which decrypted to:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

purgatory shibboleth is truth

The next message was unclear as well, but llA sU htiW eB doG yaM is obviously backwards for:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

May God Be With Us All

Woah. Anyone who knows how, get decrypting those messages.

Edit- So to recap, the unsolved clues are

Heh. So "purgatory" is the shibboleth.

Well, I told Azrael.

Quote:

<Darkstar> Azrael, can I trust you to keep a secret? Regarding Raziel
<Darkstar> Mikhail cannot know
<Azrael> What about Raziel?
<Darkstar> He contacted me.
<Darkstar> From purgatory, as suspected
<Azrael> Interesting..how?
<Darkstar> This method we are using now
<Azrael> Indeed?
<Darkstar> Yes.
<Darkstar> He sent me some cryptic messages which we are trying to decipher
<Darkstar> But Raziel is capable of communication
<Azrael> This is a very important development indeed.
<Azrael> Raziel is alive!
<Darkstar> Yes, but only his soul.
<Darkstar> The undeciphered part of his message holds a vital clue, I believe
<Azrael> That is enough!
<Azrael> I must contact him.
<Azrael> How did this contact come about?
<Darkstar> The chatroom #purgatory.
<Darkstar> Do not tell anyone else.
<Azrael> I need a key to access.
<Azrael> What is it?
<Darkstar> Truth.

We went to purgatory.

Quote:

* Now talking in #purgatory
<Darkstar> Raziel.
<Azrael> Raziel!
<Darkstar> I told you Azrael. He is alive.
<Azrael> How do I know this is not a trick?
<Azrael> Raziel, answer me!
<Darkstar> No idea.
<Raziel> a2fdb98358e0744a91d22f9f7fc2c031
<Azrael> What is this?
<Darkstar> Gah!
<Darkstar> This is the same encoding I couldnt figure out
<Raziel> In nomine Deus
* Raziel has quit IRC (Quit: )
<Darkstar> Again, he leaves me with more questions than answers
<Azrael> Thomas Bisson, this had better not be a prank by you humans.
<Darkstar> Azrael, I certainly hope not.
<Azrael> For if it is I will not wait for the leaf with your name on it to drop.
<Darkstar> If it is a prank, I have been taken in too.
<Azrael> Hm.
<Azrael> We shall see.
* Azrael has left #purgatory

Quote:

<Darkstar> Azrael, trust me, I have no knowledge that Raziel is a prank
<Darkstar> I hope this isnt, but if it is I am not to blame.
<Azrael> I shall give you the benefit of the doubt for now, although I have not been given the same treatment amongst my own kind.
<Darkstar> I understand.
<Darkstar> Let us hope Raziel is really contacting us
<Darkstar> I will have more answers when these messages are decoded, we are working on them now
<Azrael> Get to work on that code.
<Azrael> I believe it will be the key to my salvation.

Serious stuff, and another code to crack. If anyone can do these, we would be VERY grateful!

<Darkstar> I think the same. I believe one of the previous messages points to the killer.
<Azrael> What leads you to believe this?
<Darkstar> Let me find the messages I decoded.
<Darkstar> His messages were as follows.
<Darkstar> you are on the right path
<Darkstar> do not give up the fight
<Darkstar> you must find the one who killed me
<Darkstar> b49b1b81f5aa6dcb46a8cf281e313eb0 (havent got this one yet)
<Darkstar> purgatory shibboleth is truth
<Darkstar> CRwZXdj75se5s (nor this one0
<Darkstar> May God Be With Us All
<Azrael> Interesting.
<Darkstar> I asked him who did it, and got the messages we haven't deciphered yet.
<Darkstar> Leading me to think this is the most important part of the message
<Azrael> The strongest encryption...yes, I believe you may be right.
<Azrael> Raziel has always been fond of riddles and numbers both.
<Darkstar> I see. Can any of his past riddles help us to find out what this is?
<Azrael> I sincerely doubt that, human.
<Darkstar> Ok.
<Brain\Storm> hoo man!
<Darkstar> Thanks for the input Brain Razz
<Azrael> Who is this human?
<Darkstar> A friend, helping us.
<Brain\Storm> <--this one?
<InSoMnIaC> pah, he could hardly be called human
<Azrael> Yes, you.
<Brain\Storm> i'm me
<Brain\Storm> XD
<Azrael> Smart.
<Brain\Storm> not really
* Brain\Storm was kicked by Azrael (Azrael)
* Brain\Storm has joined #angels
<Brain\Storm> grr
<Azrael> Do not anger me, human.
<Darkstar> >_<
<Brain\Storm> Anger?
<Brain\Storm> Angels have emotions?
<Azrael> I do.
<Azrael> That is all you need to know.
<Darkstar> Angels have emotions... like pride ¬_¬
<Brain\Storm> Ok then.
<Azrael> You say this human is helping, Tom?
<Brain\Storm> Trying to.
<Darkstar> We each have our talents Azrael
<Darkstar> Some more than others
<Azrael> And some less.
<Azrael> Has this human attempted to crack Raziel's encoded messages?
<Darkstar> I don't know.
<Darkstar> We have another working on them as we speak, with the correct tools
<Darkstar> We don't know if we are in the right direction, but it's worth a try
<Brain\Storm> Yeah i'm taking a look...
<Azrael> Very well.
<Darkstar> Have you any knowledge on these codes Azrael?
<Azrael> I am afraid not.
<Darkstar> Ok.
<Azrael> I was never close to Raziel.
<Darkstar> Raziel seems like the reclusive type.
<Darkstar> From what I have heard of him, anyway
<Azrael> He was.
<Azrael> Or rather is.
<Darkstar> Hmm. We cannot find any answer for the cipher, only that it is unsolvable
<Darkstar> Which is not in Raziel's best interests. I think we are looking in the wrong direction

Some of this is important, some is humour (Brain getting kicked by Azrael... bahahaha). Just some stuff which people can look into if they want.

[disclaimer] I say we with the understanding that I have never personally contacted anyone (damn web filters), and, no, I don't think that I could do better even if I did have the ability to contact anyone outside the forums.

That said, this isnt meant to sharpshoot anyone, only to point out something I noticed which may (or may not) mean something.[/disclaimer]

Does anyone else think that telling Azrael about Raziel is a bad idea? At first Raziel was using Azrael.in.heaven@.. to send us cyrptic messages, The first time it was Azrael who we told about the email, and all of a sudden Raziel could no longer use the email because we had leaked the information. RE: This

now we got him here in the #purgatory, and now we've told Azrael. I hope that he is still there, but I fear he may not be. I think that we should spend some time developing the situation with Raziel. I know we want to help Azrael because we don't think he did it, but some paitence might be in order here.

Again not trying to sharpshoot, please no one take it that way.

Yeh, to be honest I'm not sure telling him was the best action either

OK, I'm not totally sure, but I think this is possibly the key to the unsolvable portions:

playing around with this converter website
I set it to MD5 Crypt (one way) and entered (among other things):

"Azrael is the one who killed me you must help me find him"
which converts to:
e21eb69d7d2d00d8dc45f9149ffcc6b7
looks strangely similar to the codes Raziel gave (32 characters, a's b's e's f's with numbers mixed in)

Setting it to DES Crypt (one way) and entering the same thing I got:
CRdU1wYPa5GAQ
which looks similar to the other code (13 characters...)

so I did some looking around and discovered:

MD5 is a secure encyption used in websites (?) the problem is it is a hash function(?) so you can't decrypt it. However I did find this website which has a downloadable program with the following description:

CTNHashProc is a Microsoft SQLServer 2000 Extended Stored Procedure that returns the hash of a given string. Currently the supported hash functions are SHA (SHA1), SHA2 (SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512), MD5, RIPEMD-160, Tiger.

I am not in a place where I can download programs (web filters got me again) unfortunately, but I will be eventually. I offer this up in case someone:

a. knows more information about MD5 or
b. wants to try this out before I have the chance in order to stop the nightmares...

As for the DES, I found this page which makes me believe that it is a java thing... anyone know java? I don't know enough to figure out how to decode this, but I'm learning.

Thoughts?

Well done, we were trying to find out what kind of codes they were. I know nothing about these programs, so it's beyond me, but when you are in a position to get them, if you could I would be very grateful. These messages are important.

I think we can trust Raziel as his freedom lies on what Raziel says. He isn't about to go and tell Mikhail as it would jeapordise everything.

Alright, well.
I found this on the forums for PPC. It appears that the way these strings have been broken in the past is by an off-line brute force method (acceptable since it is off-line and not sucking up bandwidth, and because MD5 is one-way)

I am still going to (eventually) try the program I listed above. But if that turns up nothing the key then is to find the "John The Ripper" thing that AnthraX101 talks about.

Gonna be a long night I think.

Also, as far as trusting Azrael, or anyone for that matter, is concerned I just think that we should develop the Raziel side independant from any other side for now.

If, for example, Azrael believes that he has hidden the evidence that he is involved (or covered his tracks) well enough that he would be eventually exonerated he may get nervous about Raziel still being able to contact us.

Or, as accused people sometimes get nervous and spout out any type of defence he may blab in order to save himself (think reasonable doubt.)

Plus, as I referenced in my last post, Raziel was forced to move from the Azrael.in.heaven@... address because the information had been "leaked" and it was Azrael we told about that one...

JTR is decent for doing dictionary style attacks, I recomend "mdcrack" (And not the slow windows version) for true brute force of md5 passwords.

md5 is a one way hash function that is, at the present time, impossible to reverse. The function will output 16-bytes of binary, generaly represented as 32 characters of hex. Both of these two strings fit this model. This does not guarantee that these are md5, however.

b49b1b81f5aa6dcb46a8cf281e313eb0 - I have used a character set [a-zA-Z0-9] and tried every combination up to 7 characters long.
a2fdb98358e0744a91d22f9f7fc2c031 - I have used a character set [a-zA-Z0-9] and tried every combination up to 5 characters long. (Will extend this today)

I agree that telling Azrael is dubious right now. The thing that throws me off is the "Do not tell him" line. We don't know exactly who that is in reference to, so perhaps we don't tell anyone **else**. At least until we know what those last two lines say.

Yep, he asked me about Raziel. He asked if I was the one who was contacted, so I said yes and showed him the channel. I am positive he and Azrael are on our side... absolutely positive.

Darkstar, it isnt about sides at this point. It is about making Raziel feel he can trust US.
