That's exactly what I was thinking. I live in NYC and will try and get a sign up like that or something. But the more people we have doing this obviously the better. We need to get her to see it.

I have just spent the better part of this morning reading through so many posts and getting up to speed on this. I've never actively participated in any ARG, but now is as good a time as any to start! Anyway, I have a thought on how to contact Gertrude. Yes it seems that holding a sign on something like the Today show or at a sporting event would be a great way to have her see our interest, but that leaves the question as to how would she contact us if she only has a TV and a radio? My feeling is that she can reach us via HAM as has been suggested, but if she wants to contact us via emails then she could still do this too with her TV. Maybe she has WebTV? That's still around, right?

Yeah Hell's Kitchen is in NYC. I live right by it. Nothing special about the place though really, aside from some cool Indian restaurants.

Maybe Hell was just a metaphor for Gertrude being stuck in some terrible lonely place. I duno.

Hey- somthing neat:
Quote:
The Hellschreiber is a teleprinting machine on a principie entirely different from that of the RTTY teleprinter. The Hell sytem (named after its inventor, Dr. Rudolf Hell) could have been invented with the requirements of the Radio Amateur in mind, but strangely enough the Hell system has never been fully accepted by the Amateur fraternity. The reason may be that an enormous number of used RTTY machines flooded the market at low prices after World War II.

It seems the Hell system was a technique used in WWII for communication. Maybe we could use this.

Though the Ham Radio and this Hellschreiber machine are good ideas, I don't see them being very practical. I mean, we don't exactly know where Gertrude is, and if Ham Radio frequencies don't broadcast over a large distance, what's the point?

I'm already making a sign for the TV idea. Anybody else interested in doing stuff like that?

...I've got the world on a string....

I hate to add more conjecture, but I'm bothered by this:

Quote:
They say I'm just the first. Some of you will be the second, others the third...but none will be the last. They won't stop.
By the time you've read this email for the 2nd or 3rd time, I will have joined my family.

It strikes me as odd that second and third are repeated twice so close together.

From what I understand, Ham radios can broadcast over large distances if you use repeaters, or the Internet, or bounce them off a satellite. They have been used for global communication for decades.

hmm yeah i know what you mean... it seems really disjointed the way she says "Some of you will be the second, others the third", as apposed to saying some of you will be next.

..summer breeze makes me feel fine...

I agree Queen.

And why is it by the time we read the letter for the second or third time, and not by the time you read this e-mail I'll be dead or some such thing?

I've attempted to dissect the first few paragraphs of the e-mail using 2, 3 and 23. For example, counting every 23 letter and such but so far I've got nothing.

No big surprise really, but frusterating none the less.

Martha's email does seem deliberately repetitive. There are words and phrases that are repeated close together two or three times in a single paragraph, including:

plight
wildest dreams
understand
brought
upon myself
sharing
movie
side
die

hmmm i reckon theres def more to the email, i think shes trying to direct us to look closer at it, when she talks about us reading it a few times. if it was a simple goodbye letter type thing, then we wouldnt necessarily repeatedly read it.
