[UPDATE] New Sentinel Article (27th April)

Quote:
Wheel Season to Begin
By ANTONY CLAPHAM
The professional Wheel season begins tonight with the Nomads playing the Daemons at the much-combatted Triple Wheel Stadium. PWA Commissioner Nonna Gordon announced that despite the law suit filed last year, the season will begin as scheduled.
"We think we have an exciting year ahead of us, and I'm sure we can yet come to a reasonable accommodation that works for us and for our neighborhood," Gordon said at a press conference. "We understand how the Quadrant side [inhabitants] may be a little put out with us, but we really are working hard on their behalf."

To that end, Gordon presented a plan to implement noise-cancellation devices around the perimeter of the stadium. Under the projected schedule, the devices will be deployed mid-season, probably toward early July.
Quadrant Street Association President Orville Price said that these measures are too little, too late. "For years, we have been requesting that the stadium deploy a plan such as this one," he said. "We all know the PWA has deep pockets, and they didn't do this before because they didn't have to. It's only under the threat of a lawsuit that they're finally coming to the table to talk it over. ... It's just a disgusting attitude toward the neighborhood."
Meanwhile, wheel fans just want the game to go on. A long line of enthusiasts waited out the chilly, drizzling April day for opening-day tickets. Groups of Nomads and Daemons fans joked side-by-side about the shortcoming of their respective teams. (The Daemons are favored this year.)
The lawsuit is a class action on behalf of the residents of the Quadrant Street district, and seeks damages for the stadium's repeated disregard for citywide noise ordinances and encouragement of "rowdy behavior."

Some interesting new information about this society....

Very interesting. Noise cancellation devices (can we do that? I seem to remember some fancy walkman headphones that record surronding sound and play back the opposite in order to cancel it out...certainly can't do it on football stadiums though!)

Do you read this as the supporters joking about their own teams or each others?

About their own teams I think...witness any conversation involving Newcastle fans this year. Embarassed

I want some video footage of a Wheel match. I'm just having trouble imagining what it could be like.

Is it some sort of it's-a-knockout style romp with people being spun round on oversized inflatables while others through giant pieces of foam toast at them or is it a bunch of grown men wheeling hula-hoops around a track for a couple of hours. The possibilities are endless.

To my knowledge (we're "studying" sound in science right now) if you project 2 waves in the same direction, with the crests of one on the troughs of the other, the sound gets weaker.

I'm done.

Quadrant

Hi all - new here, so a bit sheepish...

Thing about this that gets me is the name of the district in which the stadium is located: Quadrant. As cube, or cube like?

Hmmm...

Close, but it's Five Cups, not Three. So you get Two Cups extra.

Five of Cups...sorry Tanner Smile

I have a feeling that this game is going to turn out to be another mental one, but played in teams this time. Or perhaps a sort of physical puzzle like the crystal maze ("Get the crystal, get the crystal...automatic lockin I'm afraid...hello mumsy!")

I was thinking more like quadrant as in ancient navigational/astronomical device. The neighborhood could be shaped like one as well.

Unfortunately I can't stop reading it as a sentence whose first letters spell 'gonad'...

Nomads and daemons...referring to computing terms? near-anagrams?
