good job jeb Smile

Violet, i wouldnt say there's anything inherently unkind in his image. Gaming culture thrives on community togetherness and interactive experiences. fFor many, this means creating new works of art inspired by the game. There's a whole meta thread over in the 'discussion' fForum which is nothing but people making up their own derived photoshopped works. Dont be too hard on im eh Smile he made something really pretty:)

Ok, let's not go stalking someone people. A quick search on the web will show that Brett J. Gilbert and his ambigrams are not related to the game just as tanner is not simply because his Cube was featured on the site.

If he says he's not part of it, there's no reason to think he is. After all, Scarlett is simply gathering press clippets and listening to readers. As for - 'Now, for reasons that aren't really relevant, we almost certainly know that it was not sent in by a
"reader" but was made almost "to order".' - that is complete rubbish. We don't almost certainly know that at all.

He sounds like a perfectly nice person from the reply, but is not in game so let's just leave it at that. In fact, perhaps you could invite him here if he's interested in the game.

Right, these are the facts as I know them -

1) Brett J. Gilbert DID exist before this started (by quite a long time - whois and links from unupdated pages), and he had been doing these ambigrams for a while also.

2) He lives in cambridge (whois) which i have heard is the home of the PMs.

3) His webpage 4.0 is non-functional... Probably nothing

Wishi-san - I realise that we do not know at all that it was made to order, I was just trying to make it sound like I knew more that I did Razz

The only other thing, I have my cambridge friend with me here now, and there is something a little strange about the addresses... but i'm not going to follow it up...

Ah well, regardless, we've found the artist who made the ambigram, whether IG or OOG we don't know... Worth keeping a vague eye on though.

Jeb

i didn't mean to sound really harsh, I just thought that, coupled with the Cambridge-ish location thing there may be a reason to think he's part of the PMs and we've rumbled him. But, that said, I will leave it alone!!!

I've found something strange on the sites too. Actually I thought I was onto something until Wishi-san said this. So referring to Ms. Kiteway and not actually saying he's OOG but saying nothing's there counts?

Don't get me wrong. I have no doubts to the previous status, kindness, or skills of the man. I just didn't figure somebody in game would actually say they're in game. Sorry, my noob is showing. Laughing

Violet: have to say I agree... maybe we shouldn't push any more?

dead weight: also yeah, I wouldn't expect an in game character to say they're in game

Is he PM, MC, or none of the above Wink

OOG: Brett's reply sounded to me like he was commissioned to create the ambigram for the PM's and was trying to clarify without breaking the mood...

Something a little odd i noticed in Bretts reply was the following:

Brett wrote:
no significance in my Cambridge locale;

Why does he bother to say that? Jeb's email didn't say anything about his Cambridge location being in any way relevant to the PMs location. That is of course unless Jeb has stripped that bit of the mail from what he posted here (Jeb?)

Just struck me as a bit odd, although maybe i am missing something.

The only thing I said was that "note, I can get to Cambridge if needs must" - either he's overly insightful, or maybe he reads these forums (we're being watched - aaargh!)

Jeb

(this has become total spec, sorry Razz)

OK, OK, I know I said I'd leave it alone, but I'm like a kitten with a ball of string.

Just got sent this:

Violet,

I hope, as you say, that I have indeed sorted out any confusion. And
yes, I did design and build my own website; from scratch; all my own
work; Scout's honour. (Any similarities to any other website is
unintentional... and kinda disappointing - I know that all art is
theft, but design is supposed to be more original...)

I've been aware of the existence of Perplex City for a while and only
created the ambigram as a sort of personal intellectual recreation. I
was rather pleased with it and thought someone involved would enjoy
seeing it. I didn't expect for it to appear online (I was unaware of
Ms Kiteway's blog), nor for it to generate so much interest (although
as I said to Jeb, I am chuffed that it did and has!!).

However, I must emphasize that there is no message... sometimes an
ambigram really is just an ambigram.

Happy hunting,

Brett

How did his ambigram get to Scarlett if he didn't email it to her directly? She said it was sent to her... ...And he says 'aware of Perplex City' rather than 'Sente's search for the Cube' or something. Am I going mad? Also the 'Cambridge locale' thing is odd...

Erm, he sounds like he "knows" ms kiteway?! I;m reading it as "I was not aware that Ms Kiteway (whom I know) had a blog" - might explain how it got to her - maybe we email scarlett with a few questions (how the bloody hell did she get it being the most obvious!)

Jeb

EDIT: PS - what was your email to him about? Linking his site design to..?

Sorry Jeb, I should've said! This is what I emailed him:

Dear Brett,

Thanks for emailing Jeb back, you've sorted a lot out for us!  I was
wondering how you got involved in Ms Kiteway's website, and whether you designed your own website yourself, as it's very similar to another one we're all taken with.

Thanks,

Violet

Please let me know if I'm reading too much into it, but the Futures kind of suggested that something might happen on Tuesday and that's when his ambigram went up on the blog

Also, the more I think about it, the more it seems strange that he's gone to the effort of creating an ambigram for something that seems to not have caught his interest. He says 'Happy hunting' as thoguh he's not helping to find the cube at all.

hmm i initially took that letter as definitive that he was oog- but you're right- how did he know about cambridge being significant? and where did he send the ambigram if not to scarlett, unless he sent it to the sentinel? or to mailSPLATperplexcity.com or something??
