Erg, don't get started on that 24 numbers thing again, the poor bloke is probably an innocent bystander... Who just happened to make that ambigram, and send weird emails, and... Ok, who wants to phone the guy? Wink

This poor guy, if he's OOG, has the worst case of coincidences running. I'd almost decided it was nothing until I saw the DVD of the week on the play site. Maybe I just need a life... Dunno

Well, at least the DVD of the week wasn't "The Cube" eh? Smile

I have to agree with dead weight, either he's either bloody unlucky, or we've stumbled across something...

For us non-British english speakers, is "chuffed" good or bad? Smile

Ambigrams... Type Rplexci Wink

Too bad. Seemed like such a good mini-puzzle. I spent hours typing "Rplexci" everywhere (e.g. Sentinel, etc.) hoping to Authenticate... Crying or Very sad

Shtop, shtop; your shpec is not ready yet Wink

C'mon guys; I think it's fairly clear that he's just a guy who likes to write words upside down. And if you're really not sure then take GuyP's advice:

At this point, it might be a better plan to try and get to the bottom of this by emailing Scarlett, rather than Brett.

As a general rule of thumb, if it's not pretty obvious after a couple of emails that someone is IG then they're probably not. Yeah, he clearly likes puzzles and stuff. That's probably kinda how he became aware of PPC in the first place. But it's not a reason to flood his inbox with accusing emails.

Of course, if he crops up a couple more times then type away and hit SEND as much as you like Smile

Wow, I didn't know I was going to set all this off when I posted the guy's site (I guess I'm starting to see the attraction of all this ARG business Very Happy ).
I emailed him yesterday but wasn't sure of the etiquette in posting correspondence. This might clear things up or it could start it all off again.

I sent:
Hi Brett,
Nice site by the way.

Are you the Brett who sent an ambigram of Perplex City to Scarlett Kite?
I've posted on the forum that I'm guessing it was you, sorry if you're not
and a few more Perplex City players email you with questions.

Anyway you reminded me that I did an ambigram of my name when I was a boy,
I've tried to reproduce it in Photoshop but you'll have to excuse the quality as I did it really quick.
I'm not entirely happy with it but thanks for giving me a trip down memory
lane anyway
I'm attaching it for your amusement and / or comments anyway but don't feel obliged Wink

He sent back:
Thanks for your email - and yes I am indeed the Brett who produced the
ambigram of 'Perplex City' (how many others can their possibly be,
after all... the universe of ambigram designers is fairly small! (The
universe of 'Bretts' isn't exactly enormous...).

The design itself turned out a whole lot better than I originally
expected, which was why I thought someone in PC would like to see it -
it's cool that other people are seeing it too now!!

My ambigrams.co.uk site is pretty new, and I've got lots more designs
to add, when I get the chance.

What I like about your ambigram is the confidence and coherence of the
design - strong, clear shapes and strokes. OK, so *maybe* the
readability isn't everything it might be, but there is always a
balance to be struck between the visual and the semantic, and
individual designers can set that balance as they see fit. That's what
great about being a designer - you get to decide the questions *and*
the answers!

Cheers,

Brett

For what it's worth I'd decided he was a nice guy but OOG

We don't know:

  • How Brett got his ambigram to someone in PC
  • How Scarlett got it

Either scarlett is lying to us about getting it from Brett, or Brett sent it to her but didn't know she had a blog (IG).

Or, Brett made it and sent it to the Sentinel / PC.com and it was somehow sent to Scarlett. But then why would she put it on her blog, knowing we'd find Brett and harass him?

Also, Brett denies there are any codes in his ambigrams - but we don't ask him if there are any!

I think that this guy is IG. If he's not, he's being deliberately evasive.

i agree
i thought when i saw earlgrey(clearly the only real tea by the way) had already mailed him that his email would explain why he said the thing about cambridge or who he had emailed the ambigram to...

now it just makes me think he is ig again

For some reason this has a touch of the tabloid scandal about it:

GILBERT IN "MY SECRET AMBIGRAM SHAME"
ADMITS TO WRITING "HUNDREDS" OF WORDS "UPSIDE DOWN"
"FASCINATED" BY PERVERSION OF ALPHABET
WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

etc, etc...

I'd put my hypothetical winnings from S&S on him not being IG. Because I really don't see it making any sense... admittedly he's being a bit cryptic, but still. We've already seen MC / Seņor Hon / etc written into the story, so in a sense they're in-game, but we're not sending them lots of emails / singing telegrams / homing pigeons in the same way we might with Scarlett... I think at the very most, we should consider this guy in the same category as other Earth-based characters.

Oh, I don't know about all this... I'm going to feel horribly guilty if he is being harrassed OOG (although atm he has only received 3 emails to my knowledge - earlgrey, me and deadweight). However, given the amount of evasiveness he is showing in the emails, he is either IG, or OOG and winding us up. I think either way he is fair game to at least investigate.

Furthermore, before I went out this evening (last time i see GF before uni Sad ) I checked out a few other things and chatted with my friend. Having checked electoral roles / bt phonebook online etc, this is the only way we can see the ordering work:

1) FACT: He did a Masters at Cambridge (UK) specialising in Materials Science and Metallurgy, certainly spending his UG years (89-92) at Robinson College
- he also says that he got a Masters just because he hung around doing research for so long. Not knowing exactly how the system works at Cambridge for NatSci, all I can tell you is that for Maths (which I got an offer for which I flunked) the system is currently that 3 years = BA, 4th year = Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics, Postgradding at Cam for 5 (or 7, I can't remember) years = MA. However engineers (my friend) get 3 years = BA, 4th Year = MEng.
Regardless of this, we know he must have been in Cambridge for a few years after 1992, possibly to present. He may also have 2 places of residence - "home" and a flat for term time?

2) FACT: Brett appears on the electoral roll (sp?) for the Sawbridgeworth address, but not in Cambridge, however he appears in the Phone Book for the Cambridge address, but not Sawbridgeworth
- This gives the further evidence toward the 2 places of residence - registered to vote at home, where he is also ex-directory?

3) FACT: Brett is the "lead technical web designer" for play.com (OOG: our sponsors? does play.com have any links to firebox.com?) (OOG(2): if he is OOG, bit unfortunate the DVD they lead with - Alice in Wonderland... or is he a further maze of rabbit holes??!) he also web designs in his spare time (sister's site etc)
- Wouldn't a web designer be a perfect member of mission control on earth given that our main point of contact with PC is online?

4) FACT: Brett owns www.ambigrams.co.uk
- Well, if it was meant to be a clue from the ambigram from Brett, where better to put it - how likely really is it that the owner of ambigrams.co.uk be called Brett, given that most of us didn't know what an ambigram was a week ago?

Well, that's a load of collated crap, hope it's not too messy, it's late, I'm a teensy bit drunk and rather tired...

Also, I hope I'm not coming across as some kind of weird stalker... I soooo hope this guy is in game.

Finally, it scares me how much i found out about this guy given essentially no info except his website - I have his phone number ffs... :S

Jeb (slightly scared for his own personal details...)
