I think both Phae and botherer can be forgiven for the fact that their apparent enthusiasm for the genre has led to a little bit of butting of heads. I think Mr. Walker's article was pretty sound (nice job!) and I also think Phae can be pretty fiercely loyal in defending what she loves, so, at the end of the day, Everyone Can Be Right, here. Wink

After all, what do They say? "You can't really DISAGREE about something properly, unless, on some level, you really AGREE."

Ah, see, I tried the whole Zen thing, but my aunt pointed out that for me, the effort was doomed from the start, and I may as well accept that. Not being the type of person to simply accept anything, I passionately resisted her critique for a while. And then I realized she was right.

That said, I usually do try to give the multiple sides of arguments their due consideration, as evidenced by the fact that in any given post, I use "on the other hand" an average of about six times.

In this case, however, I feel that the apparent assumptions prompting such a question are a gross misinterpretation. But whatevah.

article

Wow botherer, thanks for posting here. And thanks for trying to explain the genre to a large audience. If you ever have questions or anything, just post them or ask around, we will be glad to help you!

Now that you are here, can we interest you in a game? Are you going to play the game formerly known as syzygy? Or maybe the Art of the Heist? Many good games are underway. We will help you, or anyone else, catch up as best we can.

Thanks again. And if you are in NYC in July 22-24, drop by ARGFest. We would love to welcome you to our city and our community. Smile

Don't forget that Project Gateway (2) is about to start as well.

You mean "Section 32 - Line of Destuction"?
Rumours are it starts Winter 2005, or so the desktops mention. Wink

[offtopic]

Yeah from what I've been told, what people have labelled as PG2 is really not PG2, just a continuance of the characters lives, in a different scenario.
in otherwords, there is no need to have played Project Gateway (thank god, cos I didn't) in order to understand or effectively play Section 32: Special Forces Unit and the Line of Destruction, as I've written briefly(hence the memorised ramble) on RGA.

The desktops were cool Smile My favourite is Cyberstrike and Blur Reality - with the pretty colours (lol) Very Happy

as for the article, I thought it was pretty cool just to see a huge write up on a genre that we all know and love. any publicity IS good publicity. I wonder how many people are googling 'ARG' or 'Alternate Reality Games' or Tranquil Valley as a result of that article?[/url]

from what I saw on the project gateway main site, it starts in little over a day. (there's a countdown there)

Tranquil Valley....

I neglected to mention the Tranquil Valley PMs for their part of this article. How cool is that, a home grown game gets props as well! This is fantastic for them and for our genre. I am really trying to find copies of this article here in the city. If I can, I will pick up a few copies for us.

I went to the Hudson News in Grand Central, they have a large British mag section, but they didn't have that one Crying or Very sad Then I noticed that all the other UK computer mags were from April 2005, leading me to believe that the most current issues hadn't arrived yet. The nice gentleman who works there indicated that they do indeed carry UK PCGamer, so I'll try back in a week or two.

Maybe I'll buy some to use as ARGFest prizes Twisted Evil

I think Johns article should be welcomed especially as this genre being new (yes new, to most here it might be old news but to the rest of the world, a few billion still don't know about ARGs), the genre need more writers that are interested in exposing the genre to a wider audience.

If we are to crit every article that comes out about ARG's then we will soon lose those in places of media to expose the genre because all they will be expecting is a wave of emails explaining where they went wrong or where they could've done better.

I think John's article was much welcomed to the genre and has succeeded in alerting those outside of the genre of this alternate world that can be available to them if they wish to indulge.

Thanks John, well done on picking up on this new genre and willing to spend time on writing the article and creating awareness.

Kind Regards
Sean

Loved the article. Exposure, exposure, exposure!

Don't sweat the "mistakes", folks...Steve Peters could have written the article and not gotten it 100% "factually correct". ARG is a young genre that's waaaaaaay too open for interpretation at this point for one point of view or other to be correct. We can't even seem to agree on even the most fundamental issue of what an ARG is, and that's OK. Very Happy

Vivé l'ARG!!!

and I agree with Wishi, those photos are pure cheese Razz

Hey, I hadn't been checking the main forums, just the perplex city ones since 2 days ago - bloody hell, I didn't realise that anyone would actually care about the article...

Covering a few things, first, I started playing having read the article, and TBH the negativity that the article said you lot have for n00bs (which i haven't seen, but meh Smile ) purely made me actually read all the background stuff instead of jumping straight in - I'm glad I did Smile (I mean, imagine buying a 'normal' computer game and reading the manual first - where would be the fun in that?!)

Second, I hate PCGamer - ARG has taken over my life, and I've only been playing like 2.5 days... :S It's amazing how paranoid you can become - I spent about 2 hours scouring that magazine for clues (esp. letters pages and adverts) - I honestly couldn't see anything... Ah well...

Third, well, I don't have a third, it was going to be me searching the magazine, but that went into the second because it was too short. Erm... Yes.

Jeb
