vpisteve - on the DVD was an old-ish version of the video from www.perplexcity.com (didn't include, for example, the abbey road reference)

Err, yeah Smile

That's due to copy deadlines. That was the latest version of the video available before we went to print.

I should stress, to clear up any confusion, that the article was nothing to do with Perplex City or Tranquil Valley. The latter happened to be the first game I played, and I chose the former as it would be an active game when the article came out, so act as a useful illustration. That the people running PC were so helpful was a huge bonus for me, and I think really helps the feature to make sense. I thought it would be a lot easier for people to get their head around the concept if there was a 'walkthrough' for a current game, and so it was ace of the PC people to give us the hi-res video for the disc. But nothing was performed in conjunction with anyone - just sweet little me making it up as I went along.

Oh, and those of you in the States who want the US Gamer to run the feature... convince them! They pay stupid amounts of money to their writers : )

I was congratulating them on their games being written about in your magazine. Press coverage isn't that common around here (yet). A mention in a major article on the genre and the community is a notable achievement. (so yay!)

"Making it up as [you] [go] along" is the essence of playing these games. That unscripted nature, in things like interaction, is part of their appeal. I am glad you took the same approach in creating your article.

Shall we organize a massive email campaign? Where do we write? If we manage to convince them, you will get compensated at the going US rate won't you? And then fly to ARGFest for a press junket?Wink

If you don't mind my repeating myself, are you going to play any of the several games playing now? I hope so.

Even if you are unable to jump into a game now, you offer valuable insight from a new player's perspective. For some of us it can be difficult to recall exactly the issues we faced as new players or to fully appreciate what those issues are now. Things evolve rapidly.

Any comments you could add about what was helpful, what doesn't work, and, what you suggest for remedies would be valuable. Even if you don't have a solution in mind, we are pretty good at problem solving in just about any area, so maybe you could just raise some discussion points. (We can glean some of them from the article, but maybe you could add some specificity?)

Martavius wrote the commandments comprising the basic unfiction philosophy a long time ago. One reads something like "thou shalt help new people." That remains the intent, although sometimes our nature undermines our intent, and we can, at times, be impatient, or cross, to new members. ( I know of one instance from Acheron-- PASTA BAGEL-- where I contributed to making her feel unwanted because of my misinterpretation of what she was about. I have learned since then and don't think I would repeat that mistake. )

Anyway, if you have ideas for solving the issues you mentioned in the article, we would love to hear them. If you don't feel like posting your thoughts in the open forum, you can always PM your thoughts through the forum to any site admin or mod or anyone else <cough>me<cough>you feel comfortable with.

Thanks again for corresponding with us. Cheers!

new player issues

Jeb

A main point of discussion had become whether unfiction was not newbie friendly as botherer said in his article. I read your previous post in this thread. I thought you said you hadn't noticed any negativity being shown new players?

In this instance, I specifically addressed botherer, even though I rarely do that in a post. (yes, I realize I am doing so in this post directed to you Jeb.) I wanted to make sure that botherer, as a new member of unfiction, felt comfortable expressing his opinion. I found it ironic that a person with three posts was being criticized because, dammit, we are so friendly to newbies! Laughing

Sorry if I seemed to overlook you. Please share your issues or concerns in the forums or PM, wherever you feel most comfortable.

And welcome.
