[PRESS] GameDaily thinks 'ilovebees-esque' is a word

exerpt from Pyschonauts' Marketing Explores Every Avenue
(dated Monday, April 11, 2005)

Quote:
The last piece of Majesco's Psychonauts marketing puzzle is the ilovebees-esque "Psycho Portal" contest at PsychoPortals.com. According to Majesco, gamers will "work as an online community to solve a series of game-related challenges so they can unlock ten online portals and become eligible for prizes." All elements of Majesco's campaign for the game point back to this competition, which the company hopes will snowball into something greater than the sum of its parts, in a way that only viral campaigns can. It should be noted, though, that unlike ilovebees.com, which hid its tie-in to Halo 2, PsychoPortals is clearly a Psychonauts site.

"Solutions to puzzles will be all over the net, so teams will have to work together and think outside the box to find solutions. We've teamed up with some of our retail partners to hide clues on their websites, and other places one normally might not think to look on the web," said Gold.

Let me just say that I am playing the PsychoPortals game, and it is sooo not an ARG, and has little resemblence to any team-based game. Yes, as a player you select a city "team" to play with, but a single individual frequently unlocks a portal with a very quick answer to a very easy puzzle. Additionally, there is nothing "viral" about this marketing campaign that I have seen -- unless you count last night's "challenge" to click on a banner ad on an external website.

As far as the 'thinks it's a woed' aspect, technically, anything-esque is a word, describing something like that thing. As for the rest, um...I don't really know what to say to that.

I think this is a clear example of the Law of Diminishing Returns. ILB and 42 created an atmosphere where a well-written viral campaign can turn into something great, and companies are going to ride those coat-tails for a while. As ARGers, it's our duty to ferret out what's good from what's bad-esque.
