[UPDATE]3/24 - idea, will (keyword - ozymandias)

will:
We have the word DESPAIR still...but, now, a picture file (next0.png) of numbers.

Note that, for evil's sake, the picture is white numbers on a transparent background - meaning that your standard view picture technique results in a blank white screen.

idea:
Quote:
The human mind imposes meaning upon the universe. This meaning creates a force, telos, which works to bring reality in tune with our ideas.

It pushes the incomplete to completion.

It pushes the unjust to retribution.

It pushes events to resolution.

Don't you want to know how it all turns out?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
New keyword - telos - but all it does is repeat the three "It pushes..." lines above. Not even new hidden text in the page source.

Gah, tried to add the numbers as a code, but the formatting didnt turn out right. So, I'm uploading it as a text file so it's a bit easier to read and we dont have to keep transcribing.

We missed something on the will page (either that or it was updated again). It's in black letters, so you have to select all or look at the source.

Often knowing what to add is not nearly as important as knowing what to throw away. Thus we can return to what the ancients knew.

About the picture, since it hasn't be commented on yet. vidstudent and I were talking in chat last night, and he mentioned that the layout of the picture looks just like the periodic table. We've tried playing around a bit with ROTs and vigeneres, but haven't come up with anything yet.

Lurker here, so I don't have the URL bookmarked or memorized. Could someone point me to the website with a link? (Please?)

Heh, only if your browser defaults to a white background. My browser settings for everything -- such as font size, font color, background color -- are all non-standard, non-default. I did it for style sheet checking -- you'd be surprised how many professional sites are designed to assume a white page without setting it -- but it comes in handy for ARGs too.

Welcome!

OK, there are basically 3 URLs:
http://simonsumeria.info/energy.php
http://simonsumeria.info/energy.php
http://simonsumeria.info/energy.php

They all have input boxes, and different keywords take you to different pages. The one with the picture is will.php with keyword ozymandias:
http://simonsumeria.info/will.php?keyword=ozymandias&submit=submit

Oh, and for convenience, this page lets us know the last time something has been changed:
http://simonsumeria.info/energy.php?keyword=crown&submit=submit

And of course the wiki! Smile

There's a lengthy new section of story on energy:

Quote:
The cavern stretched out into the distance, stone floor and ceiling hanging impossibly close, with no means of support. The plain was featureless in the sourceless light--except for one thing.

Hours after her fall--as if time had any meaning here--her footsteps brought her to the structure. Four pillars of stone stretched between the planes of floor and ceiling. Their arrangement was completely regular, their sides smooth. In the center was a throne. Of course, it was nothing more than a large chair that grew from the ground...but there was something about it, perhaps the attitude of the old man lounging in it, that spoke of authority.

He finally focused his gaze on her. "Well," he said, voice raspy. "Another one."

She blinked. "Another?"

"Haven't seen one of you magic-people in a while."

Her throat constricted with empathy at the dryness of his voice. "You mean, there have been others?" she said, then coughed.

"What, you think you were the first to hear about Inanna?" His laugh was saw-toothed. "There have been many--not to mention the woman herself. There have been even more who did not make it this far."

Her hand went to her bare throat. "I've already lost much..."

The old king leaned forward on his throne. "And you shall lose everything else," he murmured. "Didn't you expect that?" He pounded the arm of his throne. "Oh, they let me get away with bits and pieces, 'cause they know I'm just whiling away my time. But you, they're watching everything you do."

Her eyes widenend. "Watching? Who?"

"Who do you think?" He stared at her for several moments, then burst into harsh laughter. She backed away, finally turning and walking on. The echoes of the old king's mirth followed her for a long, long way...

"Look upon my works, ye mighty..."

"Look upon my works ye mighty" is a line from the poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelly.
edit> the full line of the poem is "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Uh, JoeUser, that's one page three times.

http://www.simonsumeria.info/will.php
http://www.simonsumeria.info/energy.php
http://www.simonsumeria.info/idea.php

Oh, and that's been there since we found the ozymandias page, aNgus. Alas, despair is neither a keyword nor helps with the numbers, as far as I can tell. (Nor its antonym, hope.)

Oh, and catherwood, if you're interested in playing, you'll want to go to http://daemon.chaoseed.com and set up an account. That way, vis can send you wacky e-mails to decode. Smile

Anyway...coded periodic table. My first guess, with that new line, may be that some of those numbers exclude themselves, and thus the element they represent from the final answer, because they make no sense with the element. For example, what does 15 have to do with Helium, a six-letter word and the smallest of the stable noble gas family with no way to support fifteen protons and neutrons?

Doh, thanks for the correction.

The numbers do remind me of the periodic table; I've attached ascii versions of the table in both symbol format and by their numbers.

They look too similar to be a coincidence, though the table on the page is too wide and has an extra "stairstep" on the right side. I'm not exactly sure what to throw away yet though.

Another interesting thing is that the numbers range from 0 to 24, making them fit nicely into the alphabet. I tried ROT-ing the symbol by the corresponding number but didn't get very far.

I think that is because in a normal periodic table, they put the Lanthanoids below the table and mark its position with a *, whereas simon's version has the lanthanoids in its correct spot. There are enough spaces on simon's version to stick elements 57-70 in between elements 56 & 71.

Oh, you're right!

Here's a combined full table containing the symbols, with their weights above them.

Edit: fixed formatting to make it line up right.

OK, I'm not really getting anywhere yet. Here is the periodic table and the puzzle, lined up correctly. I hoped it would show some differences, but no luck.

The only thing I see missing are the actinides.

Still no progress. I took the symbols from the periodic table and ROT'd them accoriding to their corresponding number in the puzzle.

I was checking the Wiki and I came accross this

Subject: The truth

I have been manipulating your little "puppet masters" since the beginning of this endeavor. Look at the filenames of the elemental webpages--random letters? I think not.
Three names shall unlock understanding...

the file names it is talking about are In, Lg, N and Na.

Lg isn't a chemecal (it is actually a chemical company www.lgchem.com ) - the other three are.

on the puzzle

In is 14, N is 6, Na is 0. doing rot on them (using the numbers) Wb T and Na - which I don't think is anything...

here is a site with information on the chemicals...

In - http://www.chemicalelements.com/elements/in.html
N - http://www.chemicalelements.com/elements/n.html
Na - http://www.chemicalelements.com/elements/na.html

Edit: about the Energy ozymandias Page - the last line...It is a wrong quote...does anyone know if This might be significant... here is where I found that it is wrong

Quote:
This poem is often incorrectly quoted or reproduced. The most common example is "Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and dispair!": it replaces the actual "on" with "upon", thus turning the regular decasyllabic verse into an 11-syllable verse; and it adds an apocryphal cap to the actual "mighty", thus adding an anachronistic Christian touch to a pharaoh who died 1235 BC.

That email was from the very beginning of this "second game," and the resulting keyword was "gilgamesh", which relates to much of the Sumerian mythology we've been working with.

I don't think the incorrect quote has too much significance, because "look upon my works" is so often quoted anyway.

I think the main thing to focus on is the periodic table puzzle. What about the clue: what do we need to throw away to get it?
