Domain Registry FYI

I just received this email and thought I would share what I learned with others. It appears that this company is misleading domain name holders into thinking that they must pay this company or loose their domain registration. According to Yahoo, this is simply not true. I'm posting this to warn anyone who might have received one of these.

First is Yahoo's response followed by the solicitation at the end. Be warned.

*Consumer Alert*

It has been brought to Yahoo!'s attention that several companies have mailed confusing domain expiration notices and renewal solicitations to domain holders such as yourself. Yahoo! is providing this alert to be sure you understand that these notices are solicitations and that you are not required to respond to renew your domain..

If you registered your domain name through Yahoo!, your domain renewal fees are automatically paid by Yahoo! as a part of your monthly or yearly service fees, as long as your service is active. If you renew your domain through any other company, you may be paying more for your domain than necessary and transferring your domain away from Yahoo!

We also want to remind you that transferring your domain away from Yahoo! does not automatically cancel your Yahoo! service or adjust your fees.

Email I received:

This domain is scheduled for deletion within 3 days. Please submit
payment
at the address below to ensure you experience no interruption of
service.

[url deleted]

Melbourne IT is your domain registrar and payment for renewal must be
made
immediately to ensure continuity of service. You may have registered
this
domain through a partner or reseller of Melbourne IT. Failure to pay
this
invoice will result in your domain name registration being deleted.

It is vital that domain renewal fees are paid on time to avoid
registrants
losing domain ownership. We request you provide us with up-to-date
contact
information to be able to contact you when payment is due.

Sincerely,

Melbourne IT
The Trusted Registrar
