Skipping the fluff, straight to the hot.....

I pulled into the Waffle House and parked next to the black A3 that Nisha was driving, then walked in the door at straight-up 1:00PM. I scanned left. Vaguely familiar faces caught my attention, "could that be them"? I panned right and was greeted by the sight of the unmistakeable Nisha Roberts. She was sitting on the end of the seat with Val across from her and Meghan on her right. I walked over and introduced myself to Nisha as Johnny5. Val was busily stirring his coffe (now I know why) and looked up to offer his hand in introduction. He was wearing a dark gray military style moehair jacket (poor guy, I was hot in my short sleeve knit shirt). Megan introduced herself next; she was wearing a white ribbed top with a whispy yellow jacket. Nisha's was attired in all black with black pinstripe hip-hugger pants and black pointy-toed high heels.

As I was taking my seat next to Val, I was asked if I wanted anything and I requested only water. Val slid a spare water over to me and I sipped it, sucking on the ice. As Nisha pulled out her notebook, I glanced at her watch; "Hmm ten minutes faster than mine", I thought "they keep funny time here in Atlanta. That explains a few things". Nisha opened her notebook to a rough sketch of the dealership's layout and began going over the general plan. I looked over at Val and saw him not too inconspicuously fiddling with his PDA, I caught on to his motive when he adjusted what was suddenly obvious as the lens and snapped a photo (that sneak Smile).

Once Nisha was satisfied we were comfortable with the general plan, she reached into a duffle and pulled out 3 of the 5 Treo phones within. They had our names written on masking tape on the back. We all took a minute to familiarize ourselves with the phones and adjust the ear buds to suite our needs. Meghan's hash browns arrived as Nisha started going over our individual assignments. Nisha gave us all our own special access code for the conference call and began testing her connection. Meanwhile, I had found the camera function of my Treo and proceeded to take snaps and video with it (fruitlessly as it turns out) while Nisha was getting Meghan up to speed on the conference call.

She went over our assignments starting with Val. He was to perform lookout from the vantagepoint of the shallow between a Mitsubishi dealership and Jim Ellis Audi. For this task he was given a pair of binoculars. His secondary task was to distract the guard by posing as a lost traveler, and for this he was given a map. I quipped that he could ask for a place to buy some inexpensive shoes as I held up one of my new acquisitions. My job was to linger on the adjoining VW lot near the south entrance of Jim Ellis Audi until notified to proceed into the dealership. Once inside, I was to seek the Audi A3 in question and search the car with reckless abandon. Val showed me his SD card to make sure I knew what to look for. Next, Meghan was to enter and distract the salesman at the front to buy me time to search the car for the hidden SD card.

Once Val was deployed, Nisha asked me if I would have any trouble locating the card. I said "Those things are pretty small, they could be anywhere, but I have a pretty good idea of where to look" She replied "I'm sure you do". While waiting for the go signal, I occasionaly caught wiff of something foul. I thougt perhaps it had been an unwise decision to sit near the restrooms.

Nisha gave me the go signal and I proceeded to cross Peachtree to the dealership. On the way, I asked her for the last 3 digits of the VIN so that I could verify I had the right car "174, got it." Meghan was deployed just before I reached the VW dealership. Once in place, I reported my position and feigned interest in the local VW offerings
"Oh! Is that the new Jetta? Wow, the Passat is offered in TDI again, hmm a Touareg"
Meanwhile, the laser red TT across the street was calling my name. I was just noticing a black A3 outside with someone taking extensive inventory on it when I heard Meghan leading the salesman to the A8. I got my cue. Heading for the south entrance, I noticed a sign on the door indicating that video surveilance was taking place and that I may be recorded.
"Yay"

Hot (continued)

I went straight for the A3. There was a large yellow extension chord donut underneath the front of the car. My first task was to verify the VIN. "I have the A3, VIN verified"
I did a once around and entered the driver's side door. Once in, I immediately started looking in the obvious places. I opened the armrest, found an accordion panel and slid it open, "nothing" I felt around the steering wheel "check under the floor mats" Nisha suggested in my earpiece. Right about the time I started lifting floor mats, a tall man in a white dealership shirt approached and introduced himself, holding out his arm at full length to shove his hand into the window of the car. I took him to be the GM of the store based on his presence, so I shook his hand and introduced myself. He asked If I had any questions or needed help with anything or if I was interested in a brochure. "As a matter of fact, a brochure would be great, can you locate one for me?" Once he was gone, the search began again in earnest; I was sliding seats all the way back in their tracks, removing ashtrays, pulling off panels. Nisha continued offering suggestions and asking where I had looked.
"The steering wheel, the arm rest cubbies, the floor mats"
"Did you check the glove box?"
"Yes of course, right now I have a computer access panel open"
"Look in the back".
I got out of the car and climbed into the back seat. I was pulling out the rear ashtray when the GM showed up again and poked his head in.
"Hi! Sorry, I couldn't find any brochures"
"Oh, that's too bad, I actually own an A4 and am looking to trade, I was comparing the rear passenger leg room of mine to this one"
"Well, the A4 is a bigger car"
"Oh, I have the older model, this is surprisingly similar in legroom"
"OK, well I'll be back in a minute"
"Sure, I'll be stealing things out of this car in the meantime" I thought
Nisha came in over the earpiece "Check the Navigation system"
I climbed out and got in the driver's seat again, my search became focused on the Nav system. I was pushing buttons and twisting dials. A skinny black-shirted dealership employee was just passing by.
"Excuse me, does this screen come out?"
"Oh, yes, you have to have the power on"
I reached for the key, cocking my head sideways.
"No, you don't nead the key, just use the small button"
I pushed the button and the display lit up. Success! Then I pushed the screen access panel. The screen slid forward to reveal two small slots in the dash. The slot to the left was occupied by a small piece of blue plastic. I pushed it and it popped out."Got it!" I said to whoever was listening. I palmed the card and closed the screen on the NAV system. Since I didn't have a front pocket, I was holding my Treo in my hand; the SD card was tucked between my palm and the Treo. I opened the door and headed for the exit.
"I have it! I'm out"
Nisha couldn't hear due to the chatter and called for silence.
"J5 repeat!"
"I have the card"
"Describe it"
"Blue, unlabeled, 128MB"
"Everyone out!"
I headed back to the black A3, which was the rendezvous point.
"Get in"
We got in and she turned on the car for some much-needed air. A thumpy tune at an elevated volume came blasting out of the speakers.
"Ooo, Nice" I said.
She rolled down the windows, got out her PDA and asked me for the card.
Val and Meghan arrived and got in. Nisha put the card in her Treo and exclaimed success.
She started uploading immediately. "This should take about 30 minutes"
Our Treo's were confiscated and we all got out of the car and followed her around to the back where she rifled through some bags and pulled out dark gray duffel. She set it on the grass and pulled 3 of the 5 boxes out and handed each of us one while congratulating us on a job well done. The boxes wrapped in brown paper and twine and adorned with the LRR stickpin. We all thanked her and I requested a moment to record the event in a photograph. She hesitated, offering the excuse that she didn't want anyone to know where she was. I countered that it was a she was in front of a nondescript chain link fence in a nondescript setting. She declined again, promising that she'd post a record of her own. Nisha then jumped in her A3 and sped away.

Surprised
Whoa! J5, I didn't realize how tough that was in the A3!!!

Very slick, palming the card. I appreciate the discretion with regard to the surreptitious photos. I had a feeling we would not be able to snap pics indiscriminantly.

If folks ever wonder how most ops sound over the comm circuit, the posting on Iannet is a great example... Wink

yeah..i listened to our comm and i must say that i made a fool out of myself! oh well...my father thought the bit about me going to meet him at waffle house was a bit funny...which it is. Hey---it was the first thing that came to mind.

It really hard to carry on a conversation with one person without him knowing you are carrying on a conversation with three other people. Talk about multitasking!

Well...I kept my pin and sold the treo. Some businessman from Atlanta is really happy now and I am glad I got some money. I wish I could've kept the Treo, but I don't have Sprint and don't want to change companies.

So overall, I got to participate in a fun-filled and drama-filled adventure with j5, Val and Nisha....and I got a nifty LRR pin and a few hundred bucks out of it. Pretty freaking awesome!

Wonder when we'll see those pictures Nisha promised to post of us?

Folks,

This is what an ARG should be. The OP was top notch and played very straight. If they ask for help in your town. SIGN UP!

Despite Meghan's comments, she had the toughest role, keeping a diversionary conversation and monitoring the net!

I will never be suspicious of Ian. Even when they drag him away in handcuffs to rot in prison after he's confessed, I'll still be convinced he was framed and coerced into confessing. Very Happy

Yes, I know - I need help
