I think the pianola idea could be on the right track. It seems to me like the one theory about the holes so far that seems plausible.

again i say to you sir, punchcard punchcard punchcard

(although i have no way to back this up, as i have nothing that can read one.. but yes, i also concur that the piano music is as plausible an idea. music box too?)

punchcards are roughly the same dimensions as a dollar, wide and short. also if it was punched with the overlaps shown in the picture then i doubt it would be read so i don't think its likely

I still think that whoever converted it to a barcode was on the right track.

Well, it is not just the black bars which indicate a number, but also the lack of black bars.

Jesus do u like things on a silver platter....
save the barcode as an .jif image and zoom in like 600x times and ull seee black dots that look like braille. its right above the barcode u can't miss it at first i though it was a word but it isn't.

the guy who made the http://www.xs4all.nl/~edje01/colony/barcode.JPG changed it a little after looking at the pic more. He might be wrong though :p

i see, he's added the half ones at the bottom.

yeah, i'm looking, and seeing that they're all in even rows, there's not a bar that crosses a row, or is in a random placing. i'm thinking maybe not a barcode, but also starting to lean towards the musical piece.
it looks like something that's meant to be read in one row at a time, like how a music box or pianola would play something

It's definitely not a barcode! I've just checked and the widths don't work..some are *1 and a bit* long and so the barcode theory hath failed.

the series of little white rectangles reminded me of a player piano roll of music. i've found a site with some software (mk3a) that allows you to scan a series of holes and convert it into a midi file.

http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/rebirth.htm

i don't have a scanner but if someone feels like giving it a go it may prove fruitful

Anyone tried this yet?

I tried to scan the barcode using a powerful reader. I can not get any part of it to scan. Just to let you guys know, this thing can read any barcode thrown at it Sad I think the barcode idea is bunk.
