[UPDATE] new sentinel article 19th April

another new article. not so exciting as yesterday's, tho.

Tokei Receives Permit
By GARIMA KING
Artist Randal Tokei has received approval on a permit from the Office of the Council for his public performance piece in Azad Park later this summer. The new work is entitled "Construction and Destruction." The performance is expected to begin in early July and continue through mid-August of this year.

According to the permit, over the course of the performance, Tokei will build an elaborate palace of specially treated paper cubes. During the midpoint of the performance, he will burn the palace under the watchful guard of the Perplex City Fire Department. In the final weeks of the show, he will perform a silent vigil as the ash marks left by the blaze are erased by weather.

In an exclusive interview, the typically very private Tokei told us that the theft of the Receda Cube last year opened his eyes to a new way of looking at the world. "The people of Earth are now cubed, where they never were before, whereas we are now cubeless," he said. "Doesn't that just blow you away? I think it's crucial to our time to come to terms with what all of this could mean."

John Ha, owner of the Mobius Strip Ha Gallery, said that art critics are very excited about the go-ahead from the Office of the Council. "This is the first major attempt from a well-known artist to take on the events of last year," Ha said. "It's very daring for Tokei to come forward with this statement that so clearly shows a feeling of helplessness and futility." The Ha Gallery has on offer several of Tokei's earlier and more permanent works.

Tokei's career includes winning last year's prestigious Academy Founder's Prize for Art for creating an installation in Creation Park entitled "Suncatcher." The piece includes crystals placed in a brightly painted carbon-fiber clockwork. Over the course of a year, the moving sculpture captures the light of the sun to reflect a pattern that takes exactly one year to repeat. Tokei has publicly said the sculpture contains an enigma, but nobody has yet come forward with a solution.

Strange to suggest that 'the people of Earth are now Cubed...' I don't feel any different so perhaps he was just being metaphorical.

Surely he means that we have the cube and they don't when he says that Earth is cubed. You know artists and their arty farty way with words!

Any thing in this? Is there a sculpture we should be looking at?

Unless anyone knows a stature that fits the description, I'd say not.

I wonder if later in the game we'll be able to access his website and if it may have a flash file of the sculpture for us to try to solve.

There's always Kryptos, a sculpture in CIA headquarters with four parts, only one that hasn't been solved.

Given the people who have tried this, wanting us to solve would be a little rough, but it's an interesting parallel to this world, and a puzzle to throw yourselves into if you get bored. Very Happy

I think we have a sculpture moving in the sky. Venus de Milo? Venus moves in a pentagram shape right? I just read that da Vinci Code book the other day Wink

An "installation in Creation Park" reminds me of the sculpture that was erected in Central Park here in New York last winter. It was called "The Gates", and consisted of huge banners of reddish gold fabric suspended between huge pillars.

Uh, as far as we know they can't send matter to Earth yet, only data (in the form of photons or something - we don't know how they do this yet either). Therefore, it's not much use us looking for the sculpture here on Earth because it clearly isn't here. I think Halrandir has the best suggestion for how we might finally see this.

There's an idea, we should just go solve the Kryptos code while we wait for PPC to really get moving.

imagine if we went to greenwich park on friday (the home of the greenwich meridian - the "london time district") and found it full of massive paper cubes- a PR stunt by Tokei to get his intallation off the ground!
