[UPDATE] New Sentinel Article (26/04/2005)

Quote:
Five of Cups Owner Found Dead
By PIETRO SALK
Police say Five of Cups owner Bernardo Holyoke, 53, was found dead in his bar late yesterday morning, in what police officials suspect was a bungled robbery. The crime is an unexpected setback for the police, who have recently been making headway into reducing crime in the long-problematic Old Town district.

Police Detective Helena Frye says they were called into the bar by an employee at around 10:00am. The employee, who wished not to be identified, said that he was entering the bar to begin preparing for lunchtime business and found Holyoke's body in the back office. "There was evidence of a bit of a struggle, and it is clear that the intruder or intruders ransacked the establishment looking for ... cash or possibly drugs."

Frye declined to give detailed specifics regarding Holyoke's means of death, but did say it was "definitely a murder, no doubt at all." She added that the bar's till had been completely emptied, but that it was difficult to tell if anything else had been taken.

"At this point, we are trying to locate and question everyone who was at the bar late last night," Frye said. "We suspect that the murderer was a patron who simply did not leave, because the establishment's alarm system appears to have never been armed [last night]."

Anyone who believes they may have information relating to the crime is urged to contact the Perplex City Police Department.

Holyoke has been the owner of the Five of Cups for twelve years. Neighboring business owner Linda Bonham described him as a "real stand-up guy, you always knew he had your back." Holyoke is survived by his estranged wife, Jessica Holyoke, 57. The pair had no children.

what i find interesting about this article is that the way it is written almost suggests that everyone in PPC should know intimately the Five of Cups, like it is the most famous (or even the only?) bar in the city.

It kinda reminds me of Ankh-Morpork's Broken Drum, but i can't think of any non-fictional bar that would be so well known that just the mention of the name means that everyone in the city instantly knows where you are referring to.

[Edit: OK, possibly the Punch & Judy in Covent Garden...]

5 of cups? Am i just getting confused, or does the discworld's pack of cards have a suit called cups? Oh... Maybe I'm getting mixed up with that episode of Friends... Meh, I dunno...

Anything interesting happening in Hollyoaks recently (haven't seen it since the fire)...

First post and observations on the new article

First, I'd like to say hello to everyone here. This is my first post. Smile

Regarding this news article - it will be interesting to find out who was at this bar last night. Do we know the legal drinking age in Perplex City? If it's 18, maybe Scarlett Kiteway was there last night, or knows someone who was?

a tarot buff's website wrote:
A figure wrapped in a black cloak (symbolizing despair) looks at three spilled cups. He is so busy lamenting the loss of the "wine of life", that he seems to have forgotten the two full Cups behind him. Here the suit of Cups, combined with the number five, symbolize some sort of emotional loss.

The focus is on delays, obstacles, or regrets. There is emotional exhaustion and no patience for any more setbacks. Though difficult, this card is a reminder to count your blessings. All is not lost. Wait until a clear direction is revealed, and in time your desire will be realized.

Maybe it's a wine bar Wink

Emotional loss eh? ok, I don't think that's too pertinant here, but it's interesting that if the people of Perplex City are supposed to be logical and not superstitious (remember one of the letters complaining that the Sentinel was the only paper to still run a Futures section), why do they still have bars named after tarot cards and cults surrounding museum pieces?

Yes, it's a Discworld suit as well - they use 8 suits (surprisingly), apparently the English ones we know and love, and also the Spanish ones, which are different and have cups, coins, staves and swords. These are kind of halfway between the tarot and modern playing cards. (diamonds = coins, for instance)

Cups is one of the original suits is it not? As in Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles. Or maybe a Tarot deck.

Anyone else think that the final sentence is a bit odd? Why would you be looking for drugs in a bar (yeah, yeah, I realise that people might be dealing out of a bar, but you would hardly store stuff there would you?)

Wonder if it was one of those puzzle bars and thus maybe kept a (legal?) supply of mind enhancing drugs (ceretin?)

Just a thought.

It does say in the aritcle that they were trying to clean up this area of the city. So it adds to the plausability that someone may be looking for drugs and cash there.

I think the Cups (with regards to tarot) symbolise emotion, and can indicate an addictive personality depending on which emotions are particularly strong. Basically, Cups in tarot can mean sex, drugs and rock and roll.... but I might be creating a v tenuous link to the bar/drugs perhaps/murder thing
