Bah! These puzzles should be relatively self contained. They shouldn't require you to randomly fall upon some information somewhere... Because last I checked, not many of us received Microsoft E3 invitations. This is much like the Red Herring puzzle is AI, unacceptable.

I think the puzzle was mostly self-contained. The pattern we needed to find the answer has been on the OurColony site the whole time. Also, I'm not sure of the exact connection, but someone posted that invitation for the last challenge - related to Reset Reality.

okay, that was dumb as all get out. props to whoever figured it out, but there was really no reason to even guess at that solution.

further proof that these puzzles are poorly constructed and poorly implemented.

but having said that, i'm gonna keep doing them so that i can see what is at the end of the road.

Does anybody know what the picture is?.....the one that is given after you complete the challenge?

I think it was a well done puzzle... forcing the use of the outside invitation made it EXTREMELY hard, as can be seen in the length it took to solve, and the links of these threads. And the more people you have in your colony, the more chance that someone had one of the invites needed.

But, everyone sees things differently. I think it was an extremely tough challenge, and for that reason I liked it. However, there probably should have been something in the word find or picture to point us towards E3... maybe that would have made the puzzle more self contained and more do-able rather than randomly stumbling across the invtation.

It's quite clearly a picture of the long rumored and awaited Microsoft product the XBong. A self contained stoners dream system. Wait until you get a glimpse of XBong Live...Pizza and Burrito delivery made 21st century easy Rolling Eyes

Compare to:

Just random speculation.

Look at the dates posted, is that a little suspicous?

Switchback - I agree with the well-done puzzle... even if it did really tick me off. There was, however, the string "EEE" near the bottom of the word find to point us toward E3. It all looks easy in retrospect, but it definitely wasn't. I think this was the first puzzle I've actually had a chance to solve (because it took my team more than 5 minutes).

The picture we were given is NOT that. The dev kits are Apple Powermac G5s. I've been up close to those a lot and nowhere on them is there anything that looks like what was given at ourcolony.

It's easy to spec that the pic we were given is the 360. Guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks to find out for sure.

The G5 was an Alpha kit, and I'm pretty sure there is a Beta before a final product ;p
And what have you've been up close with, Apple Powermacs? or Dev kits ? XD (this is most likely a beta and even if it uses the same hardware as a Mac it doesn't need the same case, sure the Alpha was rumored to have a Mac case but it was an ALPHA)

Dude, seriously. He asks a question, you post a picture of a powermac with a microsoft sticker on it. I'm saying that's not what the picture is of. Seems pretty clear even if you've never gotten to play with a G5.

Did you not even read my post? I am saying that there might be a version difference between the two pictures. (minor modifications, just maybe?)

AI = Artificial Intelligence, the movie. The first mainstream ARG was called The Beast and was for AI. Generally agreed that it was a fair bit more interesting than the film itself.

The puzzle I'm refering to took three weeks (only because we were given the answer at that point) even though the answer was actually found relatively quickly. I forget the specifics, but basically you had to find a password/phrase and there were a number of clues. Googling them returned a site called Red Herring, which is a legit website that has been around for a long time. Everyone figured this was out of game because, hey, it was a real website and legit... this game was very much about the atmosphere and world the PMs created. There were massive amounts of speculation and analyzation that went into finding the answer, very big deal stuff (much like this puzzle, but for three weeks)... In the end, the passphrase answer was actually the name of that website we found.

I don't like this puzzle because there was no way for the players to think about looking for the E3 invitation. Sure, once it was found it was rather easy (congrats on he who noticed the initial similarity between the E3 card and the puzzle), but it effectly fell down to dumb luck (no offense, but it was pretty lucky that you effectively stumbled upon the picture). If a puzzle involves outside sources, then it should have something that suggests it. Being part of the Xbox 360 promotion isn't enough, neither was the EEE in the puzzle... I mean, come on, there was also SLR and RED SEA and GAMEFIND... there wasn't any reason to assume the EEE was non-random.

On a side note, I think it was rather unkind for the PM to include the webaddress on the fortune cookie paper. It wasn't just misdirection (like the eToys), he should have realized what we rabid players would do with that kind of info. I also hope that the phone number from the filename was not some random number string, if so then the owner of that line is probably... unhappy.
