A Futurama quote is always welcome!

Well, the reward may suck, but at least we don't have to be frustrated anymore!

In other words... the G5 has nothing to do with the look of the XBOX.

Here's the deal:
One of the things MS was trying to KEEP FROM the public was the look of the new XBOX. They plan to unveil that at E3. (They are also trying to keep underwraps system specs)

However, they have been giving SOME information about the XBOX... mostly in terms of the GUI (graphical user interface) of the software system and the power of the OS, as well as share some of the new LIVE! features.

Therefore they needed a machine to SHOW this stuff... especially at the GDC (Game Developers Conference) which was earlier this year. In order to NOT show the system while still showing the operating software, they need a box (like this G5) to show off the software. It has NOTHING to do with the Alpha or Beta design projects.

On a side note: the reason they'd choose something like a MAC vs a PC running Windows, is because...

A) the XBOX software is a self-contained operating system (OS). There's no need for Windows.

B) A MAC machine is much more likely to be a closer match to ANY console (not just the XBOX, but even PS2, and Gamecube), so it is probably a much better fit for the XBOX OS than a PC would be. Of course, that's an EDUCATED guess, because technically there are no confirmed specs on the NEXBOX. A MAC is closer to the console because of the way memory is handled, and the way the CPU die is created. (Interested in the differences? You'll have to do your own crossfooting, but you can fill your head with all the techy goodies over at http://www.anandtech.com. They're full of great info.)

Anyway, enough said. There's a reason they used the MAC, and it has nothing to do with case design for the Next XBOX.

Please forgive me for my noob-ness... what's AI?

AI = Artificial Intelligence, the movie. The first mainstream ARG was called The Beast and was for AI. Generally agreed that it was a fair bit more interesting than the film itself.

The puzzle I'm refering to took three weeks (only because we were given the answer at that point) even though the answer was actually found relatively quickly. I forget the specifics, but basically you had to find a password/phrase and there were a number of clues. Googling them returned a site called Red Herring, which is a legit website that has been around for a long time. Everyone figured this was out of game because, hey, it was a real website and legit... this game was very much about the atmosphere and world the PMs created. There were massive amounts of speculation and analyzation that went into finding the answer, very big deal stuff (much like this puzzle, but for three weeks)... In the end, the passphrase answer was actually the name of that website we found.

I don't like this puzzle because there was no way for the players to think about looking for the E3 invitation. Sure, once it was found it was rather easy (congrats on he who noticed the initial similarity between the E3 card and the puzzle), but it effectly fell down to dumb luck (no offense, but it was pretty lucky that you effectively stumbled upon the picture). If a puzzle involves outside sources, then it should have something that suggests it. Being part of the Xbox 360 promotion isn't enough, neither was the EEE in the puzzle... I mean, come on, there was also SLR and RED SEA and GAMEFIND... there wasn't any reason to assume the EEE was non-random.

On a side note, I think it was rather unkind for the PM to include the webaddress on the fortune cookie paper. It wasn't just misdirection (like the eToys), he should have realized what we rabid players would do with that kind of info. I also hope that the phone number from the filename was not some random number string, if so then the owner of that line is probably... unhappy.

Thanks. And I agree. This was my first ARG experience and an unhappy one at that. But I look forward to the next one. Very Happy

Chimaera2005 ~~ This isn't an ARG. It even says as much (Not an Alternate Reality Game). Still, everyone still believed it was at first... now everyone is beginning to realize that gamem8ker might just be serious... this ISN'T and ARG after all.

subarurulz~~

I was the one that posted that pic on the earlier pages, (Page 11 to be exact.) I didn't hack OurColony either. It was an HTML coding error on his part that allowed me to see the picture early (Keep in mind that when I say his, what I really mean is the team behind OurColony.net).

I didn't go looking for it in the code either... rather, the error appeared simply on the page, so that the link showed up even though it wasn't supposed to. This error was quickly fixed, but it was too late; I had already gotten the picture.

And it wasn't found ages ago... it was found about 20 sec. before he posted the challenge (Well, technically before he posted it the 2nd time)

Anyway, even if I HAD hacked in, what would that have to do with anything?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's my thought's about the quality of the game. It's not exactly poorly done.

First off, people expected it to be an ARG, but it's not. Therefore people feel let down because many still believe to be a [poorly done] ARG.

Secondly, it DOES seem rushed, as if MS decided last minute to do an ARG again because of how well it worked before... but obviously do it different so it would seem fresh. The result is a rushed job. Not exactly a BAD job, but coding quickly under pressure can lead to many mistakes. (I know cause I'm a programmer myself). The concepts all seem correct, they just seem to have errors in the logic that is driving the concepts. This would be expected without time to debug and Q&A final code properly.

I would say that the problems aren't the result of carelessness, but rather the result of pressure and lack of resources.

Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter. The challenges are still fun. Just hard. The point is that now that we've had two fairly difficult challenges; hopefully we can start to understand the habits and perspectives of the gamem8ker and begin to build trends. Then they should get slightly easier.

Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering about that earlier... I read the page header and wondered. But all the articles I read that referred to ourcolony.net called it an ARG, so that's what I assumed it was. Very Happy
It's still super fun to try and figure out the challenges though. I checked out ARGN and I'm looking into REAL ARGs now. Take care & see you on the next challenge.

that star was from a few different co-ordinates that were given by the Gamem8ker (the barrcodes for example), and some1 decided to make a flash showing that they all made a star.
