You know, I may not always agree with Zarggg's methods, but I respect him as a moderator, being the moderator of another site elsewhere I understand the frustration that build from dealing with faceless Internet burn outs everyday.

It gets tiring, and over time, I've begun to despise the Internet, merging and moving topics is one thing, but when someone floods your board with gay porn and you have to personally fight off trolls, banning people one at a time and weeding out who's who when everyone else is getting hacked-- it's an emotionally exhaustive experience.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, give Zarggg a little more respect, from one moderator to another, I can say he's doing everything he can to keep everyone here, including me, in line-- and that's what separates us from the savages on 4Chan and Reddit and all those other sites that wannabes have hidden behind like the cowards they are.

So, I appeal to the users of this site, respect your superiors. As Zarggg is boss here, I'm boss elsewhere-- and I respect the rules here he has set as those on the forum I moderate respect the rules I have set. Also, death to Videodrome, long live the New Flesh.

I modded for a fairly active site for several years way back when, and I have some experience with what you're describing. One day, some 4chan faction decided they were going to pull off a big job in hacking every site and forum associated with the Legend of Zelda fandom. Ours gave 'em trouble though. I even earned a "Damn, the mods here work fast" from one of 'em. Basically, everything you've said is right.

Never really had that problem. I had one hacking group come over, but they never did anything. I don't know whether they could have gotten through the provider's security or not, because I decided not to piss them off & find out. So instead of trying to ban them, I just waited until they left, & took them all off of E-mail alert.

One advantage to being inactive is that I CAN covertly pick the whole board up & move it somewhere else at a moment's notice, if need be. Couldn't bring the RPs over, that's the only catch.

Incidentally, I was trolling the board they obliterated before coming to mind. I think there's some kind of weird circle of life moral in there somewhere.

Zarggg has told me on more than one occasion that they don't do IP bans because the trolls will just get another IP. In fact, the last guy that posted a fake entry thread claimed to have lots of proxies and that a ban would not work as he would just create more accounts. I told him why they don't ban and that the mods would know it's a troll because of the pattern. He claimed he was good enough not to leave patterns. Trolls are rather stupid. It's usually pretty obvious it's a sock account when a boot user starts posting in the thread praising the frickin video, or commenting like it's the real thing.

Obvious and kind of amusing. I usually see them play up their reactions a lot. "Golly-gee-wilickers, I bet Alex is regretting doing that ambiguous thing he did to Tim now!"

That is not a good reason not to IP ban. It takes one click to IP ban, but it does take a decent amount of work to find a proxy server and make an account just to post a stupid youtube video

What ambiguous thing do you refer to?

No, the trolls who post the fake entries will usually start up a whole discussion about the entry's events, but it's usually very vague and ambiguous about what exactly it was that happened in the supposed entry.

Smart to check first.

But yeah, they always post things like "Golly-pops, I wasn't expecting THAT to happen" or "I wonder how Jay will react to THAT turn of events" or "Surprised to see that Alex had a one-night-stand with THAT" etc.

Yeah, well that's what I was told by a mod on this board. So, good reason or not, that's pretty much Unfiction's policy. Not much we can do about it. Just learn how to recognize the trolls and don't post in their threads. ESPECIALLY when they start making sock accounts and posting in their own threads.

Could we make a sticky with the names of the known trolls or something? Or do we have one already that I missed, aside from the main troll thread? It seems like it's been the same gang since Season 2, for crying out loud.

I don't see why it's so hard to reform policies that obviously do not work. If a troll thread is going to stay up for 2-3 days, it is completely unreasonable to expect that no one will post in it before you get to it. But if it was okay to delete troll threads, then it doesn't matter when they are gotten to, or how many people post in them.

To say, "We won't do it because it won't get rid of all of the trolls" is missing the point, trolls look for things they can exploit, the more roadblocks you put in front of them, the less effective they will be. I mean, if you're going to use that logic, why ban trolls at all? They can just get more accounts. In fact, why lock their threads? They'll just make more threads. Et cetera.

Of course he's telling you that an IP ban won't stop him, he doesn't want one used on him. If his IP is not banned, he can set up dozens of sockpuppets in advance, if the site does start banning his IPs, then he has to start all over again each time.
