The list is much longer than this.... also look more closely at the "4" many of those look like an arrow to me.... for what it's worth Confused

For some reason the pic came out really big. There are 3 columns of numbers. Embarassed

Here's one a bit smaller.

This letter came from someone who "donated" it to the auction, Mrs. Dobbs decided it was appropriate to give it to me with the box, not sure why.

Just to save the code gurus some typing, here are the numbers from Sarah's letter:

Code:

3  9  3  5  2    2  6  2  2  2    5  0  3 15  6
2  4  2  3  2    2  4  2  3  1    4  5  1  2  2
2  6  1  1  1    2  4  3  2  6    3  9  1  2  3
3  4  4  1  1    4  5  1  4  1    3  9  3  1  1
3  4  2 13  3    4  5  4 12  2    4  5  2  2  2
2  4  1  7  2    3  9  1  9  3    2  5  2  1  2
4  5  3  7  5    5  0  3  4  1    3  4  1  3  2
2  5  2  4  3    5  0  2  7  4    5  0  2  3  1
3  9  1  1  1    0  4  1  1  3    2  5  3  3  1
0  4  4  8  1    0  4  2  1  2    0  4  1  3  2
0  4  2  1  1    0  4  3 10  5    4  5  1 15  1
3  4  1  7  4    2  5  1  4  2    3  9  4 14  1
5  0  3 20  4    2  5  4 11  6    5  0  2  3  2
5  0  1 11 11    4  5  3  9  3    3  4  2  7  4
3  9  3  3  1    5  0  1  5  3    0  4  4  5  6

225 numbers, and there are 17 unique integers in the sequence, 0-16 & 20

And the frequency count:
0 - 15 = 6.67%
1 - 37 = 16.44%
2 - 42 = 18.67%
3 - 38 = 16.89%
4 - 37 = 16.44%
5 - 25 = 11.11%
6 - 6 = 2.67%
7 - 5 = 2.22%
8 - 1 = 0.44%
9 - 9 = 4.00%
10 - 1 = 0.44%
11 - 3 = 1.33%
12 - 1 = 0.44%
13 - 1 = 0.44%
14 - 1 = 0.44%
15 - 2 = 0.89%
20 - 1 = 0.44%

Note that the frequency is skewed heavility in favor of the digits 0 through 5.

Note: edited to preserve original formatting and to reflect typos noted by catherwood. Frequencies updated to match.

More good stuff from Elderofzion:

------------------------------------------------
The html. names of the thirteen sets of equations listed by Y2K contain 13 pairs of numbers, which when combined include all numbers from 1 to 26, without duplication (i.e., the alphabet). Somehow these equations form a link to converting strings of numbers to letters --

I'm thinking these rules are intended to apply to sarah's page, but I acknowledge that might be extremely wishful thinking on my part. It certainly is not a direct means of conversion. First of all, the equations do not contain all of the numbers that are in the letter page (nothing 12 or above, just in the headers themselves). Some htmls also have three equations, for a two number html.

more number crunching on the Sarah letter

Copied from an earlier post of mine to CD, based on LL's post, y'all might find it useful --

I don't know if this is much help, but there are clearly some distinct patterns in the number strings that make me think this is not a code-breaking exercise per se. What we have here essentially is 45 strings, each five numbers long. The numbers that appear in each column are with one exception (the fourth) very limited: Column 1 has only 0, 2, 3, 4 (or up arrow), 5 (five choices) Column 2 has only five choices - 0, 4 (or up arrow), 5, 6, 9 Column 3 has only four choices - 1, 2, 3, 4 (or up arrow) Column 4 uses 15 combos of digits - 1 thru 5 (again, assuming 4 is 4 and not arrow), 7 thru 15, and 20. Column 5 uses seven digits - 1 thru 6 and 11. With such a limited field of possible answers for most columns, it seems hard to imagine this translating directly into a message.

Second anomaly -- out of the 45 strings, there are only eight combinations of digits in the first two columns of each string.
If the first number is 0, the second number is always 4 (or up arrow)

If the first number is 5, the second number is always 0 If the first number is 4, the second number is always 5

If the first number is 3, the second number is either 4 or 9 (however, this yields another one way truth -- if the second number is 9, the first number is always 3).

If the first number is 2, the second number is either 4/up-arrow, 5 or 6 (and again, this yields another one way truth -- if the second number is a 6, the first number is always 2).

What does this tell me? Not enough, as so often is the case. However, the fact that there are so few relationships to choose from seems like it has to be significant to the solution.

image rather than message?

A thought occured to me as we spec'd away in chat, that this letter was meant for Sarah Wyatt. Sarah was an artist, not a code breaker, thus this code may not break down into a message, but might be resolved in the form of an image.

It seems reasonable, but I'm not sure how to convert the numbers in the letter into an image format. Perhaps some of the brighter minds here need a crack at it.

Initially I thought the grouping of 5 numbers may be arbitrary but after looking at it for a while, there seems to be too much pattern to totally ignore the groups. Here's what I found.

(1) All groups start 1 of 8 pairs of numbers. In order of their first appearance (occurances in brackets)

3 9 (7)
2 6 (2)
5 0 (8.) [ignore the ".", it's there so the it doesn't end up to be a smiley]
2 4 (4)
4 5 (7)
3 4 (5)
2 5 (5)
0 4 (7)

(2) Here's an interesting one. All groups start with 1 of 26 triplets of numbers. This time in numerical order because that in itself seems interesting as well (number of occurances in brackets)

0 4 1 (2)
0 4 2 (2)
0 4 3 (1)
0 4 4 (2)
2 4 1 (1)
2 4 2 (2)
2 4 3 (1)
2 5 1 (1)
2 5 2 (2)
2 5 3 (1)
2 5 4 (1)
2 6 1 (1)
2 6 2 (1)
3 4 1 (2)
3 4 2 (2)
3 4 4 (1)
3 9 1 (3)
3 9 3 (3)
3 9 4 (1)
4 5 1 (3)
4 5 2 (1)
4 5 3 (2)
4 5 4 (1)
5 0 1 (2)
5 0 2 (3)
5 0 3 (3)

Still running around in circles but thought I throw this out to see if it helps anyone else.

An interesting bit of lateral thinking there. I asked a friend (props to Leftbrained/OmegaOrion!) to help, after I did it in Paint and it looked like cr*p. Here is what the 15x15 pixels look like, where 0=black and 20=white:

Based on the note accompnying the Fairy Book (found here:http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1402), it appears that the letter is not the puzzle, but it itself the KEY.

Hopefully this will be resolved once pages from the book are scanned and posted.

Alas, all those brain cycles trying to figure out the letter... all gone, like tears in the rain.

fairybook

I've been away for a few days (my stepmom passed away back in Ohio). I just read through all the posts since last Wednesday. Are the pages from the fairy book posted somewhere? I'm really lost on the rest of what's going on, but figuring it out slowly. I was just wondering whatever happened to the book. Cool

ALH1213 said s/he was going to get the pages scanned, but so far I haven't seen them posted. [Of course there are days that I can't seem to find anything so it may be here somewhere Wink ]

I have access to a scanner at work, but I'm down in Florida.

They have NOT been posted yet. ALH seems to be MIA for the moment (probably busy with RL stuff) Smile
