What the hell, Mikrotone?

http://transmedia.ca/2012/12/alternetreality-com-unveils-the-breaks-platform/

...please correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't interacting with the characters been around for a LONG TIME? I know the one I'm running is based on two that had ustreams/chat rooms at their very heart: The Crucible and early Everyman HYBRID. This is not a new thing, guys. Freaking 'patent pending', really? Rolling Eyes I'm working hard to try to explain to my actors how the whole live event/improv thing works and then these guys (who I love for everything else they do w/FME and ANr don't get me wrong...well, aside from this article) go all "We totally invented that and we're gonna patent it too"

What. Someone correct me here, but hasn't interacting with the characters with live events/ustreams/chats/phone calls been kind of key point for ARGs for a good while? I'm not just talking scripted chats or phone calls, I mean improved stuff too, like what I'm doing with my project, and The Crucible PMs did with theirs and I know others have to. Hell, didn't ByoLogic have a livestream or two?

Gah, it's late and I wanted to rant. It's been a stressful day of trying to explain to my PA and actors the whole live event "dramatic-improv-stay-in-character-here's-as-much-info-as-you'll-need" thing and then I come across this and it just kinda didn't mesh well at all. :[

But seriously, "patent pending"?

It seems to me that they want a patent for the platform, not the concept, meaning the specific software/hardware tools which deliver the interactivity. Even so, I think the RIDES platform beat them to it.

Just saw this today and wanted to explain a bit.

1. we dropped the patent pursuit.
2. Catherwood was correct in saying that we were not patenting the concept or the interaction. The patent was on the case folder system that would interact with the live video. Ultimately, we got fed up with waiting on the coding of the case folder system, as it kept delaying releases by months at a time. We would rather be known for our stories over tech.
3. Thank you for the kind words on the projects. FME was my favorite as well. It had its bugs, (late start due to the computer on the boat requiring a system reboot at the most in-opportune time ever!) but we loved every second of that project. We hope to take it to a whole new level this fall, by taking the concept into theaters. The project itself will run like FME but it will be a completely new story in the supernatural realm.

Thank you for voicing your opinion. This like this keep us honest.
