That is supposubly the case.

I am not a native English speaker and I can be wrong but... Was it a pun/intended? Or just a typo? (It was actually "supposedly", wasn't it?)

I'm fairly certain he spelled it wrong on purpose because there are hundreds of thousands of people who pronounce that word as supposubly instead of supposedly. Razz

I can't speak for Geneaux, but I believe he was making a joke. I found it funny, anyway. Very Happy

In the States, we don't like to talk about class or cultural differences, because it's terribly important that we keep up the illusion that everyone here is equal. However, it is true that speakers from certain areas of the country are regarded as less-educated/less intelligent if they speak with the dialect native to their area (this is as old as language, really, and not particular to the States, just that we pretend it doesn't happen). Geneaux happens to hail from one such area, the American South, and is probably a little more aware of such prejudice than someone from a favored area.

Truly, though, we don't really have any one dialect that is regarded as "true" American English. Once upon a time the Midwest was regarded as the least-inflected form of American speech, but even that has changed now. So what Zarggg said about native speakers not being able to pronounce correctly is technically wrong (at least as far as linguistics is concerned), since we don't have anything like RP here.

Well, I agree with Grumple.
From what I've studied, learned and from my own experience, we cannot talk about "better" or "worse" pronuntiations in the basis of the area where the speaker is. I mean, here in Spain there are a lot of people who think that the inhabitants of Andalusia (I think in English is spelled like that) speak a bad Spanish because of their accent, which is really characteristic (but wherever you go in Spain there is a different accent...). It would be also wrong for us, Spaniards to say that the Spanish talked in Mexico, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, etc. is wrong or worst than ours, just because it is different. There are just different pronunciations and, while your grammar and such are ok, you're not speaking a bad Spanish, or whatever.

Edited, so much typos. It is late here. Goodnight/evening/midday!

Odd you made that reference. I originally alluded to the "Raymond Luxury Yatch/Throatwobbler Mangrove" sketch in my post but opted to remove it. Razz

(Also, the tone of my post was mildly facetious and satirical. That's why the Wink.)

And if you really want to get technical, the Received Pronunciation evolved after the colonization of America. It's currently theorized that the "general" pronunciation of the English at the time (and the accents used by the founders of the United States) were actually very similar to the accents used in the US today, minus the European influence that we see in some American accents, via Dutch, Irish, Italian, and Scandinavian.

Oh, too funny. You should have. Very Happy

( Wink I know. But I'm not always counting on the joke to translate. I remember you saying that you were a student of language usage; I don't think you're a bigot or anything, please don't get that impression. Cool )

It's all good. To clarify, my joke was actually meta-humor about the very existence of accents and dialects.

I am forced to bow to your greater expertise: Worshippy

Dutch, Irish, Italian, and Scandinavian <-- are these the Northern Cities Chain Shift influences?

Woah, I didn't know that about the RP... such an interesting thing! Thank you for explaining this (even if it was not directed to me, I'm really interested in those things).

And about the Monty Python reference: I think it was a good one because they're famous here too and I have no idea what "Raymond Luxury Yatch/Throatwobbler Mangrove" are Embarassed

@Grumplestiltskin: They're definitely part of it. Scandinavian was more so in the western reach of that, particularly Minnesota.

So, the guy that just posted the fake TTA thread is now trying to sound like different people by creating different accounts. Hey moron, we know it's all you. You can stop now. We're not falling for it this time.
