Last year was supposed to be Alex's birthday. Hoody put a gun to Alex's head a little while ago, but wound up not pulling the trigger. Ergo, Alex lives to see another birthday.

I agree. There may be time shifts (time moving slower or faster) but I doubt MH has direct time TRAVEL involved.

The more I think about time travel, the more I think of an older Alex from the year 2066 who steals a flying Delorean time vehicle, goes back to 2006 and gives his younger self the tapes and says: "These tapes contain everything you need to know what not to do, watch them, then burn them. Oh, and one day, a kid who studies film at your college or a crazy, wild eyed old man who claims to be a scientist is gonna come by asking about those tapes, and when that happens..."

Which explains Entry 52 in a whole new light.

While Alex says "Wipe that stupid smile off your face." does anyone else here Hoody starting to laugh? It sounds like he's trying to hold it in, though?

I was putting some thought earlier into why exactly Hoody felt the need to lure Alex into that tunnel in this entry. Panic? Blocking off the entrance? Attacking him off-guard?

The most reasonable conclusion I came to (which I saw briefly mentioned early on in this thread when I was looking through) is that Hoody wanted TO to appear and for the two of them to be affected. Hoody knew it was a sacrificial move (to an extent anyway) but aimed for Alex to suffer a taste of his own medicine, similar to what he's put people through in the past. Hoody might not have known at this point that TO aims to "protect" Alex. Just because it's obvious to an audience doesn't mean it'd be obvious to the characters.

The result of Hoody and Alex being trapped in the tunnel, according to my theory, is that TO did indeed appear. Hoody later wakes up outside the tunnel, their memory harmed but seeing no sign of Alex giving chase any more and believes him to quite possibly be gone at last. Soon after, "Decline" is uploaded, highlighting Hoody's thoughts on whether Alex died in the tunnel or if he somehow survived. In actuality, TO has no intention to kill Alex, at least not yet, so he simply made Alex more inhuman than before. Perhaps this is why Hoody simply flees when Alex shows up in #73 despite being armed and why Alex's face was obscured in that entry.
