But anyway, what games are you going to play/are playing now?

They do, but I'm just saying how we had an average amount. Anyway, I don't know I'll probably wait around until something starts off that I like. I'm currently lurking in one or two threads waiting to see if they have anything that I am looking for in an ARG. You?

I have no idea, I'll probably take a break and then keep lurking the forum untill something interesting, pops up. The problem is, I don't know what is interesting. RtF was a nice surprise, but I don't know if I can spot another good ARG. Thats pretty much why I'm asking, to see if anyone has any tips.

Hi all,

somehow missed the final showdown (damned RL). Thank you all (especially the PM) for playing together.

Hello everyone!

I'm the PM of this ARG and I want to thank everyone who has been playing the game! It has really been fun and interesting 10 weeks for me! …and quite busy also ;) This was the first time I organized an ARG and I can't claim that I would be that experienced as a player either, so I learned a lot during the game!

I want to remind you that it is very important for me to get feedback from everyone who somehow participated/followed the game. As I posted to the blog (http://stoptoilworndiamond.blogspot.fi/2013/07/behind-scenes-please-give-feedback.html), this is part of my PhD studies and hearing your opinions of the game is very important for the research. I hope that I'm able to do something like this in the future, and I want to learn from my mistakes.

So, please fill out this feedback form if you haven't done it already: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1klv5Z5DtH_asYfQ5soweu3TVUUMI1RSzKNtSgwzzJQU/viewform

I'm also happy to answer any questions you have about the game...

Thanks quietceps! I filled out my feedback at the weekend, I hope it is useful Smile Will we be able to see any of your findings at some point, are you publishing them? It would be really interesting to see how you use the game in your research!

I'm sure we can come up with a few Smile My first is just how you feel the game went from your perspective and with your research goals in mind - e.g. did you expect more people to respond to the face modelling challenge, or was that more of a 'stretch goal'? But also just in general.

Thanks sequoya for giving the feedback already! Yes, I will be publishing my findings, so you'll have a chance to see them. Although the process of writing the research paper, getting it accepted and waiting for the conference/journal to come is not very fast, so don't hold you breath waiting for it…

This was the first time I organized anything like this so I wasn't too sure how it all would play out. However, I'm happy how things turned out and I was positively surprised many times during the game how you managed to solve the puzzles. However, I can answer better about the influence on my research goals after I get and read all the feedback. Personally I would like to see something like this to be organized in a bigger scale and with a bigger PM team. Possibly in collaboration with more than one university etc.

I felt like many times the puzzles in the blog were solved pretty fast. I didn't want to publish new puzzles too soon (and in many cases I hadn't done them yet) so I thought that the Face modeling challenge could be something interesting that would offer additional challenge for people who want to put time in it when there are no unsolved puzzles in the blog. If more people would have participated in it, Richard would have probably fired more people from other departments and there would have been more challenges that were contributing to the project Toilworn Diamond.

That was actually a great idea, at least from my perspective as a player. I am actually still working on the face modelling chalenge (albeit slowly), I want to see if I can use a multiple percolation algorithm to get a better initial system befor aplying the uphill algorithm.

BTW: Already sent the feedback.

That's nice to hear! The challenge was also a bit difficult to weave into the story. I mean, I couldn't really come up with a good incentive to take part in it storywise, if you wanted Beth to succeed.

Yeah, it seemed a bit counter intuitive for us to help Avecira so that's probably why we didn't focus on it a lot like we did with the other puzzles. Maybe if there had been some sort of 'prize' offered, even if just the promise of a 'sneak peek at Toilworn Diamond' or something that would have given us some more clues for the game? Then we could have weighed up the risk v reward of submitting code vs getting more info.

That's true. Another reason for the Face challenge was to use it as a rabbit hole to the game. I printed out this kind of ads: http://www.avecirasolutions.com/avecira-facechallenge.pdf and put them around campus of Aalto University as well as promoting it online with Avecira and Richard.

Also, the initial marketing of the game wasn't really a great success. Initially I had in mind that the game would have two target groups: 1. Aalto University students (and especially computer science students) and 2. people from all over the world. However, I was able to launch the game too late and when I did, it was the exam week before the summer holidays. So, it's not a big surprise weird qr codes or Avecira's ads don't get a massive response if not many people see them. Although, the response rate to the messages I sent to people who had given their email address in Unforum was really impressive Smile

Pity it was exam time b/c the attached QR code I found on Reddit would have definitely piqued my interest. Also, am happy Richard liked the avatar I sent him enough to use it as his twitter avatar 'tho the truth is I was trying to give him a wicked, Mephistopheles look. Laughing ((And Yes, my feedback form has been submitted))

A question: In the event we were unable to solve a particular problem did you have supplementary guidance tools in place and if it then still remained unsolved a puzzle-go-around scenario to convey any vital info? Thank you again.

I finished filling in the feedback as soon as I was able to. I do have a question, though. I've been trying to plan an ARG for quite a while now, and the only thing that's stopping me is writer's block. I can't come up with any ideas. If you still remember, how did you come up with the main idea and storyline? Thank you for your response in advance.

Usually I didn't have anything planned in case no one solved a puzzle. However, there was always an option to leak information from Avecira since they were also trying to solve the messages (like with this http://stoptoilworndiamond.blogspot.fi/2013/05/message-8-update.html). I also trusted that you would find a way to get additional info as you often did, for example asking Beth or Richard the right questions.

For example with the Mona Lisa puzzle, I didn't want to give it away too easily, but I wanted you to figure it out. Sorting the pixels is not really the first thing that would come to your mind, so I hoped that putting that kind of puzzle to the beginning could keep someone hooked until you know the answer. Later I put some other puzzles with qr codes hoping that maybe they would give ideas and I would have come up with a sorting puzzle if you hadn't figured out the pixel sorting already.

Well, it wasn't the first idea for a story and not even the second (but maybe the third that I considered seriously). I was a one-man PM team for this arg, but I did get a lot of useful ideas and feedback from my colleagues for the story and the puzzles. So, for me, talking to other people and brainstorming the idea together was the most beneficial thing when coming up with the storyline.

Edit: Forgot to say that I had some limitations that I had to consider when thinking about the story. Firstly, I wanted have some control over the pace of the game, so I needed some kind of mechanism to deliver the puzzles at suitable times. Also, I had quite limited resources to implement anything fancy, so I thought that a blog could be a good and easy central place for delivering the puzzles. I also couldn't commit being online all the time, so I decided to use email, blog and twitter for interaction and not for example a chat.
