Do you think the PMs would be offended if the technologically gifted were to burn copies of said DVD for those that were unable to enhotenate axons?

I'd be careful with that. Although Microsoft isn't selling them, I'm not sure how kindly they'd take to someone else giving them out. I'd ask once the PMs come out from the curtain but not actually do it until then.

I would imagine it wouldn't be a problem, seeing as a) they are giving these DVDs away for free and b) it's most likely just a compilation of audio files that are readily downloadable from the internet anyway, but yeah I guess it's best to err on the side of caution.

As a side note, if copies are made I would love to get my hands on one. Very Happy

I doubt that it's just audio because all these events, as far as I've seen are being held at theatres.

My guess is those at the training exercises will get to see the dialogue acted out (played on the theatre), and will finally see the conclusion while we'll probably just get the audio of the conclusion. They get a copy to keep on DVD and those at the training excercise will also get to play halo 2 multiplayer.

EDIT: I forgot to say, the reason i think this is because the audio has been encoded as mp3 so far, they could probably have just burned all of that audio on a cd-r

More important than anything else said above:

If you intend to duplicate them, don't ask anyone and don't post about it.

Preferably we want permission, but since Dana/Melissa have given us a way to acquire SWAG (read: ILB DVD) for free via direct mail, plus we're able to pick them up at 27 theatres around the country -- I personally don't see a reason to duplicate these.

Of course, I also think that most people will throw the DVD away or it'll end up in a box at the bottom of a pile somewhere before long. It is my expectation that only those who played the ARG for the majority of the game will really find the DVD a nostalgia piece.

Well, I don't have a DVD burner... I was just making the suggestion. They are all available online, and unless we see more than just a compilation of the audio files I don't think that Microsoft would have a problem with it. Of course, I'm not exactly an IP lawyer, so I don't know.

Aye, seconded.

That's fine, assuming you are in "the country". If Dana doesn't reply to requests for overseas shipments of DVDs, then duplicates may be the only option for those of us in the wrong place at the right time.

If your going to the event and u didn't play the ARG (or followed it) u dont deserve to go...except for the wives of people who did play...etc.

A fair point, but it only takes me back to my first point:

If you're going to pirate copyrighted material, you should at least show the base level of intelligence to not discuss it on a public forum where Microsoft contractors/employees visit

I mean, come on, we know for sure that the PMs were hired by Microsoft/Bungie at this point. We also know that the PMs have been monitoring these forums. It should not take a brain surgeon to realize that with their stance on piracy (i.e., "We believe that the use of shockingly excessive force is the best deterrant.") means you should not talk about it here.

Sigh. I am, of course, operating on the basic assumption that it is not an issue of copyright. If it is, of course, then no duplicates should be made, and I hope none are. I would have thought a "base level of intelligence" would make my stance on this obvious from my earlier posts in this thread.

Perhaps I should have labeled my post [SPEC]. Rolling Eyes

Look, if this is simply a compilation, then it's not like you would be making copies of something that is already made available for free, on the internet, by the owners of the IP.

It might technically be a copyright infringement, but I think it is reasonable to assume that the IP owners (microsoft /bungie?) would allow copies of the compilation to be made with out kicking up a fuss. Especially since they are giving both forms away for free (internet and DVD copies)

This only shows you know nothing about IP law. IP owners must control the channels by which their IP is distributed in order to retain control of the IP. By failing to enforce certain minimum standards on the distribution and presentation of their IP, their work can end up in the public domain.

What these standards are exactly, I would have to ask one of the lawyers at the company I work for, but this much I know.

This is one of the reasons why fan produced material based on commercial IP is so religiously policed by lawyers. (And yes, there is fair use laws, but distributing an exact duplicate of the DVD cannot be, to any stretch of the imagination, considered fair use.)

Help Jaw get a DVD!

Hi, just wanted to come out of lurking to suggest that Jaw should send an email to Dana to ask for a DVD. ( I saw a post that he'd like one)

And perhaps, if Weephun or another trusted crewmember let the PMs know how helpful and generous Jaw was in getting Crewmember Weephun to a training exercise, they'd see to it that Jaw doesn't miss out Wink (maybe if Jaw sent his address to Weephun or thebruce or someone the PMs would check right away?)

(I don't know about everyone else, but reading of Jaw's part in helping somebody out put a smile on my face for the rest of the day)

Plus, a big thanks to this community. It's been my first ARG (hence the lurking), but it won't be the last... Smile

Just sent this....

Hey Dana Smile
Glad to see things on the site are [[kind of maybe sorta]] getting back to normal. Anyway, I've never been one of Melissa's crew members due to time restraints [[and, unfortunately, the lack of a driver's license!!! One more semester of driver's ed to go...]], but a copy of the transmissions would be awesome. Do you know if the DVDs ever be available for sale?
Thanks tons,
Jackie
