 		I think it translates as "Rennes in flames" since it shows a burning city. gonna do I quick search of ww2 history to see if there was a major bombing campaign there or what-not

During World War II, Rennes suffered heavy damage from just three German aircraft which hit an ammunition train parked alongside French and English troop trains and near a refugee train on the yard: 1,000 died. The next day, 18 June 1940, German troops entered the city. Later, Rennes endured heavy bombings by the US and Royal Air Forces in March and May 1943, and again in June 1944, causing hundreds of deaths. Rennes contained a German transit POW camp and a POW hospital which contained many of the paratroopers captured on D-Day. Patton's army freed the capital of Brittany on 4 August, as retreating German troops blew up the bridges behind them, adding further damage. About 50,000 German prisoners were kept in four camps, in a city of only about 100,000 inhabitants at the time.


so i assume that is what the painting is depicting

 		Hi,

I've been lurkering so far, but Rennes had
a huge fire in 1720 that gutted a large part of the city.
Maybe the clue references that?

Going to preface this by saying that I haven't been following the gae up to now, or even read up-thread yet, so I appologize for missing anything here.

Ancalime and I piacked up the Seattle deap-drop thi morning. There was a box that reads "RMS GALATIA - Property of Hart and Cornwell". Inside the box was the following:
[ Photos, videos and audio coming later via thebruce, Ancalime and maybe others ]
    - A painting of France, with an inscription on the back reading "Rennes en flammes" (Rennes in flames)
    - USB key with label OSS, and fragment ID LXG4C (already entered into the database on the website and confirmed).
    - An audio file on the USB; related from moving from south London to France.
    - Journal pages from the Mathematecian talking about the equations, the mysterious man, and his dear Arika. As well a excerpt of these equations are the end of the pages


Here's a transcription of the text of the journal pages.

Arika tells me the greatest practice is in the writing so I can revisit mistakes and correct them. She says I am too formal, too "tight". I must practice. I tell her I do not know what to write. She says to write about my day. I tell her it is better not to write of such things, that it is easy for a dancer to wwrite about their day, but not a mathematician. I do not know the words for the work I do. Every letter in this language is wrong. It is an echo, or a mistake.

Arika says to embrace what is foreign. Arika thinks it will come in handy when the war is over. I do not tell her I think the war will not end the way she thinks. If I complete the work, if I give them the equations this English is without purpose. But I cannot tell her this. I cannot tell her how the war sits with me every day at my desk, how I see, very day, what they will do, if I let them. I cannot tell her anything. So instead I write.

The man comes to my office again today, asking for the equations. I tell him they are not ready and he is impatient, promises to come again soon. I tell him they are not simple, I cannot will them to appear. There us much work to do. He asks to see it, the work. I tell him it is in the mind. He says to put it on paper. He says to work hard, serve my country. You will end the war, he says. Do the work.

I think he knows they are finished. He cannot prove it, but he knows. Always, they are listening. They are not fools. This is known. Before he leaves, he asks after Arika. He says he sees her in the shops, she is looking sickly. I tell him her constitution is strong. He nods. For now, he says. He leaves. The equations sit in the drawer, finished.

I wish I am a fool. I wish I do not see what it is, this particle cascade they ask that I finish. What they do to me, to my Arika. I check the math again. Rewrite the symbols, do the work. They are beautiful, my beset work. But I cannot share them. I dare not. I shred the paper. Burn the pieces. Every line, ash. I tell myself it is better this way. Safer. Still they are written in my mind. Tomorrow I write them again. Burn them again. One day, no copy remains. That day waits for Arika to leave. When she is safe, no copy remains. Not even me.


All pages have been help to the light and scanned with blacklights to see if there were any hidden texts, but there was nothing on anything.

I'm travelling for the next few days, but you can be certain that I'm going to catchup and follow Blackhollow when I get home Very Happy[/sub][/b][/list]
