Ah, I see what you're saying--that these Soviets are a breakaway group of collaborators.

The way I read it was that this is a group of Allied Soviets and are using the "the Americans are close, but what if they fail" to motivate the work.

Potentially stupid question--how do we know the Mathematician is being held by the Soviets/is Russian at all (is there any evidence beyond the mention of 'Stalingrad')? Sorry in advance if I missed something...

Edit: nevermind--the phrase "serve their union" is the key.

Not a stupid question Smile It was also in one of the intro ducuments in the Trailhead package: http://www.flickr.com/photos/notgordian/9304344506/sizes/h/in/set-72157634673274284/

He's not just being held by the Soviets, but he is Soviet as well. (See 4th paragraph)

Wow--I had actually missed that part of the trailhead package somehow! That helps a lot.

Here's some information on the Soviet a-bomb project:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_atomic_bomb_project

Seems they started at a relatively small scale in 1943:

Quote:
By September 1942, Stalin, who had already been presented with evidence of the Western nuclear programs, decided to launch a Soviet program to develop an atomic bomb headed by Igor Kurchatov. Creation in 1943 of Laboratory No. 2 (later the Kurchatov Institute) under the Academy of Sciences of the USSR under management of Igor Kurchatov was the first stage of the Soviet atomic bomb project.

Of course, the USSR being under constant attack by the German army made their efforts smaller scale until after the war.

I think our Mathematician is working for Kurchatov (probably indirectly) on a Soviet bomb, but (as the trailhead states) the Americans are worried that he'll be grabbed by German spies who infiltrated the USSR (that and they'd really like to not have Stalin armed with nuclear weapons), so they send the Operative.

THe Mathematician, like most scientists, knows how dangerous nuclear weapons will be so is reluctant to finish his work and hand it off--he stumbles on the quantum/time equations and uses it as another stalling tactic, which annoys "the Man"

Then there is the ship.

Finally about the man himself.

of possible interest: the stairway photograph labeled "Blackhollow" on the Project page appears to be consistent with the interior of the Matagorda Lighthouse in Texas. It is an iron-constructed lighted lighthouse. You can compare the Blackhollow photo with a similar photo posted on this Texas news site - http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/news/2012/sep/04/dw_matagorda_lighthouse_082912_186502/

Nice catch! I also hadn't noticed before that the Blackhollow photo is upside-down. The hand railings extend below the stairs, not above Very Happy

lol, love this line from the article

Quote:
Confederate soldiers tried to blow it up to keep it from Union hands during the Civil War, but they failed and it was taken apart and hidden.

''OH NO!! HIDE THE LIGHTHOUSE!!!!!"...never knew hiding a lighthouse was a viable option....also where the heck do you hide a light house?

LOL good point nighthawk.

and one thing that totally escape me until i read some of the mechanics replies was, thats the main site is suppose to be the desk of the operative that is missing that was in the basement of the lighthouse. so the pictures and record album and everything are just what he left when he disappeared.

idk if that has anything to do with anything but i found it enlightening.
