I'd just like to make a comment that no matter how involved I've tried to be (with various posts on NetNinja wiki, my own website tracking the wavs and stories and various emails to the sleeping princess) I live in a separate hemisphere and it's virtually impossible to be involved in the axon's and now the DVD. I realise that I could have requested to have an axon placed in Sydney somewhere that would ring around 3am. I realise I can also send, and have sent, an email to Dana requesting that I be involved in the DVD release. However realistically I don't expect the PM's to send one to Australia especially since her post specifically mentions needing to be on her list of "trusted allies".

I'm not condoning illegal piracy, however don't get all high and mighty just because you're lucky enough to live in a place where you can be involed.

I guess I'll just have to hang on to the thought that atleast I'll be getting Halo 2 over half a day before you all Smile.

Yeah well, there's a lottery. It still implies limited access. And not everyone outside of the US can participate (Singapore). The only way for me was the wiki & this board. This board is pretty damn difficult to keep track of during high volume periods. I've missed a lot of it. The other way was the wiki, and, well, stuff like this just doesn't get on the wiki. I'd love to pay for swag & shipping, but I had the impression the Phaedra's list was closed, by the time I saw it.

Last ARG I had my email address on the AI poster. Managed to snag that one. Hope to get something to remember this thing by. Finally started playing Halo just because of this. Participated in the first wiki quite a bit until it went down. Since then participation for me has been a more difficult & confusing.

Sorry if I sound like I'm whining, but it's been pretty hard for me to become a trusted crew member from where I am.

So send your name to Dana in for swag.

Until you do that, I will continue to ... how did you put it? "get all high and mighty."

Cause you have not exhausted your options for getting the swag you claim to want. Instead you've already thrown up your hands and declared that you won't get anything so Piracy is the only way to go.

Mad

That's the attitude that upsets me.

Lastly, if you intend to pirate it, just don't post about it. It's not difficult to understand that when you do something illegal, you shouldn't announce it. Rolling Eyes

Edit: Realized that the lottery in this thread is actually closed. Crying or Very sad

We'll see what we can do to get your taken care of. No promises, cause I don't even know if I'll get extra swag, but if I do, I hope to be able to send it out to those who aren't lucky enough to get some.

Just do me a favor please, put your name in with Dana after tomorrow, and if you do get something, please pass it on to someone else who is on these forums and wasn't as lucky as you.

If you'd actually read my post you'd have seen that I've stated that I HAVE emailed Dana. I am remaining as involved as I've ever been and I'm not demanding that it should be put on the net or that I'm entitled to it.

I also never said that I had plans to pirate it. I replied to your messages... I didn't start the bittorrent conversation.

I'm simply saying that it's not accurate to say that people are contributing nothing simply because they don't live close enough to answer phones or aren't personally known to you.

Well what about people who wanted to participate, and have been tracking this thing since the beginning, but haven't been able to participate at all? I've been following this form outside the US since the start, hoping to be able to contribute, this being an internet thing. So it turns out all physical events happen in the US. And the finale is in the US. And only US residents get their hands on the DVD.

Is there a legal way for me to get my hands on one? Is Bungie going to ignore all overseas ARG & Halo fans?

As I have said in other threads, and even in this one. Many. Many. Many. Times. If you want swag, put your name on the list, and I will swipe as many as I can. The overseas people who have been contributing to the community are among the top on my list to get swag to. (read: the DVD at the bare minimum)

I'll second that.

I understand that it must be really annoying to have all of this happening in the U.S., but that doesn't mean you can't contribute.

There are a large number of overseas beekeepers who have contributed a great deal to the community here on the forums with their SPEC, their puzzle-solving efforts, and their support of other beekeepers.

thebruce is not overseas, but he's not American, and yet with his site he managed to be one of foremost contributors to the game.

So, frankly, I don't think the fact that you're overseas gives you some sort of ethical exemption from copyright law. And it certainly doesn't exclude you from participating.

Quote:
Put your name on Phaedra's list and hope that we have enough SWAG contributors to get your stuff. If that doesn't work, then there's always emailing Dana a request the way thebruce did (and he's in Canada).

Registration for Phaedra's list is closed at this point.

In any case, my list is not equivalent to getting a DVD. I think the PMs have made it pretty clear that they will permit one DVD per individual; they have provided a remedy for those who can't make it to the events by announcing alternate pick-up locations and allowing people who still can't make it to put in requests for a copy to be mailed.

The Swag Lottery is for any other freebies at the event.

I expect the worst that some people will face is being forced to pay their own shipping.

Which is, all things considered, a small price to pay both literally and metaphorically.

On this, you and I are in complete agreement. Very Happy I even said this above, somewhere.

Now, I realize I may have missed a few posts here and there in my attempts to keep up with the list, but this characterization of supposed leeches is something that has apparently flown right over my pretty little head.

I never 'solved' a puzzle nor contributed much of anything to the experience of the Beast a few years ago, and yet it was a really pivotal game event for me, one that caused me to be part of the creative team for two ARGs, and to be a part of this community. I understand your theoretical frustration with leeches that don't spell English words the way you do, but man oh man alive, something about this sort of attitude is rubbing me the wrong way. I was able to get an A.I. game poster (with my name on it!), and I was also able to e-mail themanbehindthecurtain and got some semi-movie swag. I also had two people who didn't know me from Eve offer me A.R.M. armbands from the rally meetups.

These ARGs are mighty unusual creatures. There is so little one can do to measure one's 'contributions' to the experience, beyond obvious things like web pages and wikis and in-game mentions and stuff.

I'm just not seeing the same thing you are, I guess. There may be leeches, but there's also no reason to be pulling the wagons into a circle so fiercely. It's still a collective experience, and last I looked, there is no Scantron form where I can rank my value as a player in little graphite-filled bubbles.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
MicroSoft Confirms Combat Training
By Tor Thorsen, Curt Feldman -- GameSpot
POSTED: 11/02/04 11:38 AM PST

I must first apologize for my day old news (which I don't believe is Trout). But anyways back on topic.

Mazian,

A lot of us like my self may not have as many posts as you, Did not answer as many calls as you, And maybe never tried to figure out the SP puzzles.

However, we are not leeches. I have been here since the beginning. I hesitated on registering, because at first it seemed like a Hoax. Especially with sites like ilovepees.com and ilovebeer.org (kind of funny though).

This is a Chance for some to try and participate in the ARG. It is possible that we may get a collection of info from all four locations, which must be unified in order to make sense. (Here's to Hoping)

Besides, The game comes out on the 9th. And there are some more axons on the 4th. Congratulations should be in order. Not ridicule. There are just some Beekeepers who are lucky enough to Live where they live.

And another thing... Aren't you going to the one in Cali? What's with all the Fuss.
[/spoiler]

I think Mazian and I are thinking along the same lines, but perhaps I should clarify about whom I'm speaking.

I consider anyone that's done anything, whether it's to answer axons, to provide references, to solve puzzles, or to simply be part of the conversation, a contributor.

That last is what the distinction turns on, I think.

If you've been posting here for more than the last 48 hours, as far as I'm concerned, you've contributed. I don't care whether you've contributed SPEC or puzzle ideas. If you've been part of the conversation, you've contributed.

But I got PMs from people without a single post here, asking to be included in the swag lottery. Recognizing that not everyone who could legitimately be categorized as a player of this game frequents this forum, I asked them what they had done.

In some cases, they hadn't even listened to any of the .wavs.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I simply can't justify placing such people in the lottery and risking that they will win swag when actual players don't. Which is why I put a proviso in the rules.

Some people read that as requiring that they justify to me their contributions. I didn't mean for it to be read that way -- as I said to many of them, as long as you've done anything, even just chat here, you're in. I'm not going to attempt to rank people's level of participation or anything like that.

But I do want to rule out the people who, as Mazian said, are here solely because they think they might be able to get an advance copy of Halo 2.

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify the policy I used in including people.

gkrohne wrote:
You know, this whole ILB is part of a virul marketing campaign, where the players are intended to attract other players and buyers for Halo 2. I expect Microsoft to hand out the DVD's and encourage us to copy them at will. After all, that will just create more interest in Halo 2, at no expense to Microsoft.

Gkrohne, I don't expect you to have a detailed understanding of IP law, but this one's pretty simple. Attempting to divine the intentions of the copyright holder and deciding that they would "want" it distributed is not a valid defense against charges of piracy.

Don't do it.

A couple of my friends who've been told about ILB, just never participated at all might be going tomorrow. If so, I'll see if they can grab dvd's for our friends overseas. I might also be able to get people to go to the other New York caches.

When the AI Beast ended, someone made a CD image of all the websites & material grabbed off the servers. I still have that image file with me.

If a large percentage of the DVD are files that come from the website, or are wav files completing the plot, I can't imagine that Bungie would mind that being distributed, seeing as much of that material is resting in various places on non-bungie various servers now anyway. If Bungie objects to us who can't attend the meeting from knowing how this whole thing ends on the DVD, it'd pretty much be sticking a finger at us.

If there was completely new material on the DVD, more related to Halo 2 itself than ILB, then I can understand not distributing that.

For any of you "crew" who have just joined and done absolutely nothing to contribute (see Phaedra's description above--too lazy to quote) but would still like some serious SWAG please PM me. I am giving away the actual axon phone booths located throughout NY. Yes, you read correctly. You just have to come dig em out and they're all yours!! ABSOLUTELY FREE!

Act fast..

Second chance SWAG

Ok Daddy. Razz *Ahem* seriously, I want to offer to buy SWAG by proxy for people. I'm not on the lottery senders list, but I'll be at the Austin event and can offer my services as an independent sender. Just PM me and tell me what you want (t-shirt, random souvenir etc.) and your method of payment (paypal preferred) for the item + shipping and if it's available in Austin I'll do my best to pick it up for you. Just want to help out a few beekeepers who may have missed out on lottery #1.

Important: I need to get your PM request by 5 p.m. CST (15:00 PST) Thursday. Again this is for any SWAG offered for purchase at the event, freebies not included.
