[historical information]Chechen/Ickherian/Russian events
background info for those interested in mentioned conflicts

A few people have asked me questions regarding the whole military background regarding A-T/Russia.

These should answer some questions. Some you'll need an online translation for, as they're straight from the countries themselves...

Mind yourselves, these are VERY RL conflicts, of which I've had the unfortunate luxury to witness first hand. Iraq isn't anything compared to this conflict.

After gaining a good understanding of the situation there, it might explain as to why Yuri is slightly bitter Razz

BTW, offially, the second Chechen war is over; HOWEVER, there is still quite a bit of violence going on in the region.

For kicks, go to google maps, find Grozny, Chechnya/Ichkeria, zoom in, click more in the upper right, highlight photos. Just a taste of what the area looks like even today....

I'll post more if anyone wants me to. The Caucasus/Balkans/Eastern Bloc is my area of expertise.

Mr Tutanda is from everywhere and understands everything, honestly.

It's rather lucky we get an ARG involving a Russian military corp, who then happens to get found by an intelligence guy that specialises in Russian military stuff, who then happens to devote a significant portion of time to interfacing and organising ideas with said military corp.

[facepalm] Foreign languages don't limit the information we collect on...
It's relevent because the conflicts that A-T has had experience in has been the Chechen Wars, which is a conflict between Russia and the republic of Ichkeria, which is a Muslim former Soviet State.

It was reported in Indonesia.... because Indonesia is the most highly concentrated Muslim populous out of the entire world. So naturally you're going to see Indonesia reporting on conflicts involving Islam.

Nearly all of A-T's operators are vets of the Chechen Wars. Which explains their tactics, and their interaction with civilians. [/facepalm]

If you know how a group has acted in the past, know how they operate currently, you can predict how they will act in the future.

That's intelligence analysis 101.

Khattab

I watched both parts of the Khattab (Saudi guerilla fighter in Afghanistan + Chechnya), it was so gripping. Cannot believe that close up footage of ambushes on Russian supply convoys.

Interesting Fact relating to JJ:
Khattab's mother was Circassian.

Wow. That's some crazy stuff right there. It's amazing how much stuff the world is ignorant of.

If I may ask, what do you do Ad Arcana? Why are you in Iraq? Are you in the Army or something like that? You seem like you've seen alot in your life, which is even more impressive, because if that is you in your DP, you look quite young.

Sochi Olympics and 150th anniversary of Circassian Genocide

There are more readings about this topic in Arabic and Russian but for international audience of UF here are some English links...

'Emir' Dokka Umarov

This is likely the 'Emir' from 2009 document Rhea refers to although this name is used for many of the separatist leaders in the Caucasia conflict...

[EDIT: the document we have is only dated to 16.09.2009. Of coarse it is possible it authored more recently!]

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov

After changing sides in Russian-Chechen conflict, Ramzan Kadyrov's family was installed by Putin as leaders of the republic (he took over the Presidency after his father was assassinated in 2004). Ramzan is the most bitter enemy of Umarov and the other separatists today who accuse him of being the worst traitor. Despite running a 'death squad' of paramilitary police and being a top suspect in killing of Russian reporter Anna Politkovskaya, Ramzan is very active on social media...

[EDIT: Ramzan's twitter @RKadyrov received a tweet from the Vera Novosi twitter account on 20-07-2013.]

I definitely think you could be right about Dokka Umarov being the 'Emir' Rhea mentioned. AAT suggested that it might be Ibn Al-Khattab, and I had also thought it could be Khattab or Shamil Basayev, but neither of these fit our timeline. Khattab was killed in 2002, and Basayev in 2006. Dokka Umarov, however, is contemporary.

Yes this would seem to eliminate both Khattab and Basayev.

But is there other possibility than Umarov?

In the confession, Rhea mentions Vedeno in Chechnya as the place they go seeking the 'Emir'. Maybe there is a particular rebel leader associated with this area?
