Well, this points out that the font in that "The first clue to the mystery of S." card looks very much like the font at 0:55 in the YouTube video.

It seems that is viral marketing for that book, which sounds like a transmedia kind of project....

Would Bad Robot be behind a book tho.

"Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, will be promoting the book leading up to and at publication time."

Quote from the book publisher ...so that must be what STRANGER is, looked too cheap for a bigger project.

Well goodbye Unfiction.

"Since people can't use a search function, nor can people read {other thread has been linked to twice now!}, and there is no new info here just cross posted stuff {no need to merge threads}, I'm locking this thread.

Red Walrus, you've been spoken to before about cross posting the same info in multiple threads. Just don't do it guys."

Pixie show me the thread where I've been spoken too before bout this. Kinda rude so I'm leaving after several happy years here.

Stranger is NOT specically linked to S. Book MY POSTS WERE ABOUT THE BOOK!!!...so the logically trailhead since we are talking about a book not a video(which could be for anything) was the S. book thread.

But it could of been kindly said not rudely.

Bye

your posts were of info that was already posted in this thread. period. I will say you are right, i confused what i previously scolded you for which was bumping a thread from 2008 not multi-thread posting. My bad. Even mods make mistakes... BUT if this is making you leave UF, i can't help but think there is more to it than that. if you wish to continue this line of discussion feel free to PM me, i won't derail this thread any further myself.

EDIT: fine I'll edit this down as I definitely went off the rails. however I do stand by that I feel Red Walrus is not the only person who's been put off Pixies attitude. I know she works her ass off modding here but I have myself on many sites and I never felt the need to express a negative attitude towards users. I just feel there are much more constructive ways to speak towards users, which does not result in them being put in a position where they desire to leave.
on that on that note, please don't leave Red Walrus! I value your input and participation in this community, and would truly hate to see you leave Smile

Yeah, no. Pixie works her ass off for this forum. She has been around forever, she loves uF and ARGs and transmedia stuff, and the things you are saying about her - making a whole post just to vilify her! seriously? - are unfounded, unkind, and totally out of line. She mods just about every day to keep these forums useable. Spam is a huge problem. Yes, she's going to tell you off when you're cross-posting things and doing things that show you're not paying attention to how things work around here.

As the whole "stymying the growth of ARGs" thing - I have never in my life heard such hogwash. First of all, just no. Second of all, you do know that uF isn't the only place people "play" ARGs, right? You know that creators don't aim at this forum when they create, right? If you don't know that, you need to do some more reading up on the genre and the directions in which it is moving. There are a lot of reasons for less activity happening at uF. Pixie is not one of those reasons. You are rude, and you don't know what you're talking about.

And finally, if you're a "budding PM with game-building aspirations" and plan on aiming your game at uF, then guess who will be the person keeping the forums spam-free so that players can enjoy your game? That's right, it will be Pixie, and mods like her. Appreciate her.

You have a lot to learn before you start admonishing others about what they need to learn. Rolling Eyes

Let's keep this thread on topic please. Ongoing issues with moderatorial staff should be posted in a Meta forum or general forum discussion.

PS: There's a reason why Pixie's subtitle is "Resident Angry Midget"

PPS: She's that because she often vocalizes what many of us mods/admins want to, but generally choose to stay reserved. She's like the bad cop of the forum. And she's awesome at it!

Now, to get back on topic...

The "S." novel now has a cover. Or what looks like a cardboard sleeve that holds the book.

Amazon has a description up. The book inside the sleeve is "Ship of Theseus" written by V.M. Straka.

The little white sticker on the outside binding reminds me of library books...

The description:
Quote:
A young woman picks up a book left behind by a stranger. Inside it are his margin notes, which reveal a reader entranced by the story and by its mysterious author. She responds with notes of her own, leaving the book for the stranger, and so begins an unlikely conversation that plunges them both into the unknown.

The book: Ship of Theseus, the final novel by a prolific but enigmatic writer named V.M. Straka, in which a man with no past is shanghaied onto a strange ship with a monstrous crew and launched onto a disorienting and perilous journey.

The writer: Straka, the incendiary and secretive subject of one of the world's greatest mysteries, a revolutionary about whom the world knows nothing apart from the words he wrote and the rumors that swirl around him.

The readers: Jennifer and Eric, a college senior and a disgraced grad student, both facing crucial decisions about who they are, who they might become, and how much they're willing to trust another person with their passions, hurts, and fears.
That does sound similar to the teaser.

About the faux writer's name 'straka':
Quote:
Czech and Slovak: nickname from straka 'magpie', probably for a thievish or insolent person. Possibly also from Greek Strakas: nickname for a dandy, from Greek straka, literally 'crack of the whip', used metaphorically to denote someone concerned to impress with his appearance.
We've already had a reference to another bird, the nightingale. Or maybe it's the Greek to go with the theme of the book title?

The title is also the name of a type of paradox, The Ship of Theseus, "a paradox that raises the question of whether an object which has had all its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object."

[some Meta] Apparently, even the people who got advance copies of the book had a little bit of an immersive delivery (for the sake of copyright secrecy though): http://publishingperspectives.com/2011/04/mysterious-j-j-abrams-novel-inspires-mysterious-sale

Also, talking about the postcard, Mulholland Books tweeted: "That's actually a piece from S., you know! Not just a promo item." So, 'E-' is probably Eric the disgraced grad student?

The Publishing Perspective article states
Quote:
There is speculation that the book itself will be unusual as an object -– that it might be shrink-wrapped and contain photos, letters and notes.
...or postcards.
That would make sense with the cardboard sleeve, don't want all those extras getting lost. Wink

Could well be, much like Cathy's Book/Key/Ring, and Personal Effects. I wouldn't be surprised; actually I'd be pretty excited Smile

From what I've read online about all this, it looks interesting!
I pre-ordered the book yesterday... Now to play the waiting game :/

Pre-ordered as well. Very Happy I liked Cathy's Book but I didn't come to it until a number of years after its release. I'm excited to be getting this one fresh. That and the subject matter seems far more interesting.
