Um.... Slightly educational fun that opens your mind to Alternate possibilities.
You can't say you have not learned anything.

i never said i didnt like how this ARG is going. even if this is all there is and there was no reveal at the end it would still be awesome. i was just pointing out what we had talked about before, where this arg obviously cost more to pull off then something like an youtube countdown, which makes me think there has to be something more to it. but if it did turn out to just be someone who has money they wanna spend on making an awesome ARG then thats even better.

I agree and am fully with you LOBO.

I was originally thinking this was something put on by the Smithsonian. I have seen them contract with the ARG world before. I assume spending left over Gov. cash they need to fiscally burn off.

PM?

Thanks for resurrecting this question, although I'm still wary of getting an answer. While our original suspicion was that lots of money was being spent, it's getting obvious that may be a premature conclusion. I've got a box; nice, but nothing special. And there have been only boxes and a very limited number of websites, unlike other (known) expensive campaigns.

So maybe this is more a single narrative without a promotional agenda? That would be welcome, too; but the narrative we've gotten so far is ponderously slow. It's Dicken's serialization for a very limited readership, which also seems unlikely. I still lean toward a larger ad campaign, but I think that possibility is fading quickly.

Other thought?

that box and all of its contents cost money to make. maybe not a huge amount but enough that if a company was doing this they would expect to make a profit off it. you have to multiply how much it cost to make the box and all its contents x16, then factor in travel and expenses for dropping off each box, maintaining the websites, and paying everyone involved.

so either there is a company behind this that is going to somehow find a way to turn it into profit (because no company is going to spend even a dime without it making money) or there is a large team of people all doing this for fun who also happens to have money that they don't mind losing for the love of ARGs.

New here Smile Just following, completely intrigued. Read all 55 pages. I used to follow some ARGs here years ago but it's beyond me what my log-in info was then. *waves*

Again, I don't think it's really that much money. The boxes and contents: maybe $15 of materials. Definitely not an expensive item like the Icefly. Unless the PM is using this as a tax write off for business travel I'm pretty sure s/he's mailing them to local contacts ($50 can buy a LOT on CL). There's been only one website so maintaining that and the social media could easily fall to one person.

A more sophisticated or corporate ARG traditionally utilizes many webpages/social media posts and changes up the items "dropped." This has maintained a very low-key/homegrown vibe, which makes me think non corporate sponsor.

Interesting speculations on who/what is behind this ARG. However, I wonder what scenarios people are coming up with regarding the gameplay itself. When was the first device used, taking into account the recent postings by the Mechanic? I admit to being slightly perplexed.

I asked the Mechanic a question on that very subject but as of yet to get a reply. What he is suggesting would indicate that the device would have to have been active before the sinking of the Galatia.

On another note, just to get this all spelled out, our Artist friend is obviously the Frenchman mentioned in the alternate timeline article. Anastasie is presumably his wife and it's likely they were located near Rennes at one time. The article also mentions that he left his occupation behind and went on to pursue art. I'm wondering if the Artist is really a little more like the Mechanic or the Mathematician.

Thanks for your thoughts MrToasty, I too have submitted various questions that I think are pertinent.. and await an answer. I like your thoughts about the Artist. Perhaps he was an OSS agent? The letter from OSS Chief Donovan indicated that there were many men and women (agents?) in Rennes that had returned. Maybe the Artist didn't? However, he would have obviously not been known by the Mechanic.

Not sure when my confusion set in, but i was apparently way off about the date of the Galatia sinking (looks like I was looking at the Rennes article date).
Quote:
The Galatia's journey ended in July in the western half of the Atlantic Ocean. I don't see how March 8, 1943 is related to that.

Hi all

Sorry I've been MIA for a bit--I've been wrestling with unemployment forms (yay for forced unpaid vacations...thanks congress!). I'll try to capture and upload the audio form the last entry soon, if no-one else has done so yet, but I can't analyze it, so someone else will have to take that part on.

To follow-up with what seems to be the case with the Artist:

1) he is the Frenchman.

2) he has been making the drawings we have been retrieving in the Fragments with notes in French on their reverse side.

3) the subject of his drawings and his notes suggest he knows about the Device, Blackhollow Lighthouse, and the Galatia. He also has made a drawing of the Operative suggesting they at least met aboard the Galatia.

4) he has a wife named Anastasie (who interestingly writes to the Frenchman in English) and they apparently have children. In one reality, his family returns to America for their well being. In another reality, they have possibly been killed in the Allied bombing of Rennes.

My Comment: Could it have been the Artist and not the Operative who recently used the Blackhollow Device?
