[PUZZLE] 'ANALYZE' from Cassandra's Letter to Samantha

November 1 blog Entry from Sarah:

Quote:
Analyze
And today's theme is... analysis.

I don't know what is going on at MindsMines, but I don't like it. Rory had a very good point-- it might be better titled "The secret life of us"
As far as I can tell, there are three very different personalities posting on the site. I'm not quite sure how this power struggle will have an effect on my investigation, but... it might be worth looking into exactly what is going on with Gregory.

I've been keeping the note to myself for the past few days. You guys have done a lot, and I thought I'd try my hand at decoding it, to save you the trouble.
That was a waste of time.
My scanner is down, but I'll post it soon. For now... Here's how the letter starts off. I put in CAPS the letters Gran underlined.

DON'T SHoW thIs to AnYonE. yoU wiLl undErstand soon enouGh. What I saw May be PreVented. Be CareFul, and Keep hope alive.
cassandra

Below that are three misshappen blobs of ink, which have apparently been smeared. Each has a nonsense title.

I'm stumped as to what it means... any thoughts on it before I post the pictures?

*

Here's another bit of Gran's advice. She said, when you need to clear your mind, just go outside and walk. Don't worry about where you're going, let your body move you. As soon as you're somewhere new, a place you've never seen before, stop. That's your place to sit and think, with a new perspective.

I followed that advice today.

I learned quickly that DC is not an ideal place to let your mind wander, and decided that, beautiful as the fall foliage was, I could ignore it long enough to look both ways before crossing the street.

Still, I made an effort to wander, and thirty minutes later, I had found my place.

Roosevelt Island.

A month ago, I would have been struck by the beauty of the place, the island a reminder that even in a city like DC you could find a slice of nature, of paradice.

Now I know that place serves as someone else's paradice.

I turned around, and went home.

*

When I took up the investigation, less than a month ago. I had no idea what I was getting into.
I'm still not sure... but I do know I need help.

Keep going strong, guys

Love,
Sarah

This seems like the first 'puzzle' to come out of this investigation, hence the post tag. Sorry for the size...

OK, here are the photos. I trust this is a safe enough location. I'm missing one, as it was sent to me as attachment rather than link.

Hope this helps!

Wow - okay then, this expands HEAPS on just the text that Sarah wrote originally.

did she not send out one.jpg?

Under the main text of the letter there is:
Quote:

WXYZ
JQXZ

written exactly like that (including strikeout) - Which looks as if it could be a rotation cipher for the titles of the inkblots?

There is one inkblot missing however, and I have just asked Sarah for the third inkblot...

Yes, one.jpg was sent as an attachment.
I think the decode needed is twofold. First: what do these blobs have to do with tea leaves? Second: letter code.

I don't know if they're related (like a picture of whatever is the key do decyphering its title), but maybe look into that, too. Anybody on this one?

hi! i think sarah made a mistake when capitalizing the letters.
the correct code of underlined words is:
DONTSHWIAYEULRGMPVBCFK

note the R before the G, in sarahs version it is an E.
also, sarah is a little sloppy when capitalizing at the beginning of the sentence, which is confusing.

i base this on the image three.jpg.

What is particularly interesting to note:

JQXZ

are universally recognized as the 4 hardest letters to place in Scrabble.

Smile

OOOH EXCITEMENT FOR TODAY (plus I now have a headache)
Sarah's posted the letter and all three ink blobs on the blog now, I went through this rigmorol of trial and error letter substitution (using typical letter frequency) on the blob titles:

HAVBC HART B BSNGRT BAWIC CIAVT CFVR BDVDI

after coming up with my 50th (or so) nonsensical sentence, I started to think of words that would fit the letter frequency, starting with the word: SARAH... also with the aid of a WONDERFUL cryptogram site: http://www.oneacross.com/anagrams/searchhelp.html I managed to get the following:
HAVBC HART B BSNGRT BAWIC CIAVT CFVR BDVDI
FIRST FIND S SECOND SIGHT THIRD TURN SARAH

Then I decided to use that sentence as a key to decipher the underlined letters:

DONTSHWIAYEULRGWIMPVBCFK
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

As you can see, the alphabet doesn't actually fit... but if we take the stricken letters from the bottom of the note, and remove them from the alphabet...

DONTSHWIAYEULRGWIMPVBCFK
ABCDEFGHIKLMNOP RSTUV

?????? NOT BAD for the very very VERY first ever puzzle that I solved before publication of the answer was on the net!?! Very Happy

edit - added what I solved[/url]

wow... good work. and lots of work Wink hmm.. now that i think of it - is it possible you decoded the whole thing in the opposite direction, so to speak?

it might have been easier to replace the underlined letters with an alphabet substitution, subtract the crossed out letters and use that to decode the ink blot titels.... Razz

so, what does all that mean?
Quote:

first find s
second sight
third turn sarah

who or what is s? sarah? etc.

Hello

Should we start a new thread about the inkblots or talk about it here as well? The encrypted messages will make more sense once we understand the inkblots. As for decyphering them, it's relatively easy, but we will need a general concensus about what they are viewed as. Reading leaves (Tasseomancy) merely involves distinguishing what kinds of shapes and figures the leaves have fallen into.
This is alot like the Rorschach Test:
http://www.deltabravo.net/custody/rorschach.htm

After we can decide on what the figures are, the meaning is easy: just think of what the most obvious meaning for that shape or figure is.
This site may help with the meaning. Anyone else know of some?
http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/tealeaves/tealeaves.html

Thanks for any help on this, I've been working on this for awhile now at Blogspot.

Sarah wrote in her blog that she received a letter from her grandma and here is what First Finds,Second Sight and Third Turn mean:
This is the letter for Cassandra
First Finds: The gun, the octopus: anger, danger.
Second Sight: The man, the rabbit: a visitor, need for bravery.
Third Turn: the raven, the vase: A friend needs help, bad news.

Since this is a Puzzle-thread.

Is it just me or has the titles of the posts on MindsMines been changed recently?

It might just be me who has a bad memory...
