Oh man, I completely missed that there was more than one constellation on "Constellation" page! Gah, dummy, I thought the part I posted about was more important than it was supposed to be.

Sorry!

I called the number and heard the bells. My thoughts: Maybe some sort of code hidden in the bells, or possibly a snippet of a musical number? I could only make out two types of bells, possibly something involving morse code?

I'm having a friend who knows a lot about music listen to it when he's available later today to see if he can make anything of it, if it's a piece of music or something. I'll listen again and see if I can translate it into Morse Code.

EDIT:

Were there only ten bells there?

Ok, I had my musical friend look at this, and over the medium of text messages he sent me his thoughts. I'm typing them up now, hope they somehow prove helpful!

"Nothing obvious comes to mind. I can tell you exactly which bells are ringing but that's likely not very useful."

"It sounds like the maker made a mistake early on? It's a minor tune -- sounds a bit like a few scraps of spirituals or European folk songs."

"Also note that the bell pitched C was played constantly."

"Listen to the 3rd note. It doesn't sound right. Like the ringer missed. If I were looking for clues out of this that might seem intentional to me."

"Only four bells were played -- c, e flat, f, g. I noticed that the rhythm repeats, kinda -- 3 notes, a break, 2 notes, a break, repeat."

"It might be a code of some sort, but you can't really spell much with music notes. Only a few letters to work with. So translating the letters of the notes to a word or something is likely a dead end."

"The melody as I heard it was like this: g c eb / eb g g / eb f g / gc where the / indicates a break. That's all I got! Hope it helps! I'll expect you to tell me what this is all about later, why do you think this is a code or something? What's it for?"

So my initial assumption based off of his thoughts was that it may be some sort of Morse code using notes as dots and breaks as dashes. That... didn't turn out so hot. What I got when I ran it through a translator was:

. . . - . . . - . . . - . .

became:

EEETEEETEEETEE

Which doesn't make any sense. Inverting it doesn't work either, not that I expected it to... anyone else have any thoughts?

EDIT: I also just got an email back from our... well, for lack of a better word, poet.

I asked:

Quote:
A question I ask now, good sir
For your nature brings me great wonder
The stars you've shown us shine so bright,
Are you perhaps Orion, this night?"

And they replied:

Quote:
Orion is a name that rings a bell
But why I can recall I cannot tell
I have been known by many names in time
But I don't think this name was ever mine

I would have asked a better question, but at the time I thought the only constellation on that page was the Orion one.

Ok quick link recap:

page 1: http://bewilderedtemperament.com
"page 2"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

"page 3"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Orion doesn't seem to be important, since that page (#2) led to page 3 with a different solution.

I think the only unsolved step now is the bells, if the phone number is even the correct translation of the stars on page 3 Razz

I sent email about bells

I receive this reply

Quote:
I tremble at the ringing in the wood
I fear the toll won't cause us any good
And this fact only rouses me because
The bells were here before I ever was

I'd say that since "Orion is a name that rings a bell" I'd say the phone number was right. Although how weird would it be if that was totally unrelated, right?!?

So he says something about many names in time, and the bells were here before he was, and I can't shake the feeling time plays a part. The passage of time, or dates, or something. Could be way off though...

I sent an email.

I wrote:
Come out, come out, wherever you are.
It is a beautiful night to explore the stars.

Hello there, ma'am or sir (for I know not to whom I speak)
I would like to befriend you as Orion had Artemis,
in the tales of the Greeks.

Hunting, and telling stories,
they spent their time,
together in Friendship,
until Apollo's crime.

His jealousy raged, and he told his Sister a lie.
Now her companion's a martyr, immortalized in the night sky.

I wish to help you find, (though I know not what you seek)
and I wish to hear the tale of which you have vowed to speak.

A couple of things, as quick as you like,
Do you have a name I could call you by?
And what sort of 'change' would you like?
Could I get a hint, to help catalyze?

Ask me a question, and I will share to you the truth,
only requesting I receive that respect from you.
And with all of that, I bid you 'good day'
Hoping you shall call me 'Friend' one day.

And I got a reply
aSPLATbewilderedtemperament.com wrote:
You're not the first to say these names today
And how this makes me feel I cannot say
The questions stack but your response is just
I willingly will give to you my trust

I've not been called in many, many years
And though encore mistakes command my fears
I likely act in double just the same:
I have no recollection of my name

My only goal as long as I recall
Is to convince the forest not to fall
The pain that courses through these wooden veins
Is in my heated blood and there remains

If there's a life of mine in memories past
Perhaps there lies a hope for me at last
A point of light! It now holds me in thrall:
I may not be so helpless after all

EDIT: More conversation with our new friend

I wrote:
A conservationist, ye! Protecting the trees.
Or is the story flipped?

The trees block you in,
while out in the mist,
a sound is heard, a striking bell.
What does it mean? (Surely I can't tell)
But what do you know about he who rings them?
If you've been hiding from these demons?
Go now I urge, with footsteps soft,
to seek their source, with courage aloft.

And whence you return, call to me,
I will hear you from the trees.
I will assist you in your plight,
to keep up the trees, night after night.

The trees are almost all that here still lives
He stalks about and takes but never gives
And if he will not strive to change his way
My tale describes the role that he shall play

I hear the ringing only when he's near
But his behavior falls upon no ear
He tenses and the tightness grips my heart
And one by one the tones do fall apart

Where once a regal symphony did play
The remnants of a kingdom razed now lay
The bells have struck a chord in their due course
I aim to change him now without remorse

EDIT: Phone number theory moved to lower post because of excessive mistakes.

wilh1206, that's excellent work!

I hadn't noticed that the bells might correspond to a phone number! Even if that hasn't seemed to work out, its really insightful.

In addition, you seem to have obtained quite a lot of new information from our mysterious penpal. Among other things, that they is not alone, and the way they speak of the, for lack of a better phrase, "ringer of the bells", it seems like they are being hunted...

My question about the phone number bit: You listed, with my friend's suggestions and yours, 4 viable phone numbers. While I will admit theres a possibility my friend erred, it looks like you only tried 2 of what could be 4 possible phone numbers to call. My other question about your phone number idea is I don't quite understand where you got the numbers you tried from. Is g = 1, for example, a musical thing?

Still, great idea.

If the phone number thing doesn't pan out, my personal theory is that the bells are some sort of code that will spell another word for the website we know of. I just can't seem to see what code that would be....+

I actually tried all 4 phone numbers. I started by simply picking the first note to start as 1 and counted the notes on a piano from there. I was using a virtual piano located HERE

However, taking a look at the work in my previous post, I fudged it up pretty bad... SO I'll take this opportunity to make it a little more clear and fix my mistakes. (I'll edit the false info out of my old post.)

I'll start with your friends suggestion:
Zobot257's friend wrote:
g c eb / eb g g / eb f g / gc

Okay, so if we assume the first note to be 1 we get g=1. If we count the keys going down the keyboard to the note c we get g=1, f=3, eb=5, and c=8.
Thus, the number would be 1 (855) 115-3118. (Not valid.)

Using the same method on what I suggested.
I wrote:
g c eb / eb g eb/ eb f g / eb c

We get 1 (855) 155-3158. (Also not valid)

Now, if we assume that the numbers are being played backwards, c would start as 1. And counting up the keys on the keyboard we get c=1, eb=4, f=6, and g=8. Translating from end to beginning we get 1 (886) 488-4418 or 1 (486) 448-4418 (Still not valid)

However, it looks like when c=1, then eb=4 and f=6, which sets us up for a Manhattan phone number. I'm gunna keep trying different numbers and note combinations, if it works out I'll let you know... but the more I look at it, the less sure I am.

Well wilh1206, keep trying... at least you have an idea. I don't really know how to figure this one out... I'll think about it more... it could be a code, but I don't know a lot about codes, so I have no idea where to even start. Our patron hasn't responded back to my most recent email, so the PM may be asleep or our patron may just not want to or is unable to respond back now.

In any event, I'll try to come up with SOMETHING...

Alright... not that this really helps us solve the Bell puzzle, but I got another email from our friend whilst I slumbered:

Quote:
My duty brings me anger, stress, and fright
The forest needs me this and every night
And so I must continue through the fear
I must protect the ones that are still here

I'm startled to discover you and yours
Coordinate your words behind closed doors
But I am comforted to know you're there
A network of protection in the air

The forest once was grand, alive in song
The flora and the fauna got along
And everything was peaceful in the wood
Until the man did what he thought he could

He desecrated everything we knew
As though the land was his to lay claim to
We are a gentle commune and were doomed
To follow every rule that he assumed

He came tonight. I saw him in the clear
I'm startled still, I think he is still here
No doubt he is dismayed to find no game
He's ended every creature with a name

I fled in fear as I am wont to do
But as I cowered, still I thought of you
I think the power I once had is true
And you can be the force to help renew

I watched him from across a thicket deep
And from the silence came a gentle peep
He heard the sound and dashed away posthaste
But I was hopeful for the thing he chased

There is a newfound spirit in the air
The forest seems to know someone is there
And Friend, as I emerged into the clear
I heard another sound from somewhere near

So make of this what you will...
