Or could it be that rationality is the flaw that creates madmen?

IMO madness = irrationality

but lets not get too upset about semantics

hmmm

I believe it was the prabapubadhra who said:
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." which, if it is true, would mean that to be well adjusted to our society would imply madness and it is thusly irrational to be "sane".

Touche, my friend. Cool

Retort, tanner? Cool

Anyone mind if i quote a little Nietzsche?

"His honesty, his sound and truthful character must at some time rebel against secondhand thought, secondhand learning and imitation; then he will begin to comprehend that culture can be something other still than decoration of life, that is, fundamentally always only dissimulation and disguise; for all adornment hides what it adorns."

This secondhand thought, this value imposed by society cannot be best for all men, as each society establishes value with the purpose of furthering itself. Culture can only promote culture, not men; men must promote men, truth must be instilled and cultivated individually, not dispensed secondhand by society. So what is sanity? What is truth?

Whatever you decide! But society certainly doesn't.

Ok I hold up my hands in defeat -- How could I argue with prabapubadhra and Nietzsche when they get together Smile

I should have learned by now never to speak in absolutes outside of logic.

I find that most people are mad and I'm sure they think i am.

Other than the occasional drunken binge I don't get out much -- too much time spent buried in formal logic and abstract spaces I guess. Smile

That's my excuse anyway

First... I want to say this is a wonderful discussion the RK thing is cool and all but this is the stuff I live on.

That said I would like to note that Nietzcshe is right here... kind of... the society DOES define sanity... in that they will kill you if you get to out of line with their beliefs... however it doesn't mean they're right... but if you're not around to argue your viewpoint, it becomes a little moot doesn't it?

Let's remember that another great philospher CHOSE to drink the hemlock tea because it was the law of his society... the interesting thing is regardless of "correct-ness" if your viewpoints differ dramatically from the standard beliefs of the society you become a target.
