I definitely think you could be right about Dokka Umarov being the 'Emir' Rhea mentioned. AAT suggested that it might be Ibn Al-Khattab, and I had also thought it could be Khattab or Shamil Basayev, but neither of these fit our timeline. Khattab was killed in 2002, and Basayev in 2006. Dokka Umarov, however, is contemporary.

Yes this would seem to eliminate both Khattab and Basayev.

But is there other possibility than Umarov?

In the confession, Rhea mentions Vedeno in Chechnya as the place they go seeking the 'Emir'. Maybe there is a particular rebel leader associated with this area?

Actually, do we have any hints of the date when the sisters went looking for the Emir? Could this potentially have been before (or soon after) the death of Basayev in July 2006? I ask because Basayev was born in Dyshne-Vedeno, and looks to be the most prominent person with a title or nickname of "Emir" from the area.

The Vedeno Gorge is considered one of the most dangerous regions in Chechnya. In the mid-19th century Imam Shamil led his guerrilla army in a twenty-year war against the Imperial Russian army and fought a last stand in the anonymous mountain village of Vedeno. Shamil Basayev was born in the village of Dyshne-Vedeno, near Vedeno, in south-eastern Chechnya.

Like you said, though, it's still worth investigating other possibilities.

Food for thought: Dokka Umarov is NOT dead, but stepped down from position in 2010.

Many in radical Islamic groups will sort of "excommunicate" for a lack of better words people that step down from prominent positions/see them as no longer respectable and view them as good as dead. Seen that many a time overseas...

Not saying that's the case since Dokka Umarov played/plays a massive role in the Caucasus but it could be a possibility to explain it.

Ibn al Khattab died, but it wasn't publicly recognized/admitted within those circles for quite a while until it became common knowledge. With how many times he survived what could/should have been fatal accidents, Khattab at times has been viewed not too dissimilar from how Rasputin was viewed... "blessed" per se, invincible, touched by the hand of God himself. Which could be a reason why the girls sincerly thought he (if it is in fact Khattab) was/is alive.

I had forgotten about this part from Rhea's confession:

Rhea Numitorova wrote:

The Emir is dead, they said. Everyone knows.

Vera said they were lying. We would only speak to the Emir. They took her away from us then and led her up the stairs. Oksana tried to hold her back, but Vera told her not to worry. "Our brothers will know that we are pure."

I think that rules out Umarov. I am leaning back towards Basayev (especially since he is from Vedeno and his family was there), or Ibn Al-Khattab now.

May be in interest your forum to see that leader of Right Sector Dmytro Jarosz asked help of Kavkaz insurgent leader Doku Umarov to fight Russians alongside nationalists on VKontakte Page yesterday.

Translate:

Quote:
Appeal from the leader of the Right Sector Dmytro Jarosz to Doku Umarov

The Ukrainian people and the peoples of the Caucasus are united by their joint shedding of blood. Many Ukrainians with weapons in their arms have supported the liberation struggle of the Chechen and other Caucasian peoples. Now is the time to support Ukraine!

As leader of the Right Sector, I call on you to activate your struggle. Russia is not so strong as it seems. You have a unique chance to win. Use that chance!

After this posting appeared Russian media and Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov on his instagram spoke against the Right Sector leader.

Translate:

Quote:
Today it has become known that the leader of the Ukrainian nationalists from the Right Sector Dmytro Jarosz is asking Doku Umarov to organize terrorist attacks in Russia. We have obviously seen whom America and Europe considers an opposition member and a political force. Yarosh publicly calls for terror, but he is being helped by countries that are supposedly against terror. The USA declared Umarov one of the main terrorists of modern times, but Yarosh for them is a good guy. Ukrainian nationalists would like to oppose Russia, as well as the Crimean Tatars. I personally have spoken to their leaders. They are not intending to take up arms against Russia. But we will not leave without attention Dmytro Jarosz's words that he has fought in Chechnya. Doku Umarov, with our help, has been sent to a place from which no one has ever returned. We will write a ticket there for Yarosh, too.

But later last night the VKontakte posting was removed and Right Sector claimed that the account had been "hacked".

One important question:

Where does Boney M fit into all of this?
