EDIT: Also, right at the beginning of the call, she said something like, "I know you've been watching me," or "I know you've been waiting for me," or "I've been watching" or SOMETHING that I can't remember because I was freaking out at having a *live Melissa*. So, since she's never talked to me before, I've never been involved with the SP, etc. what the heck did that mean?

Did anyone else get anything like that?

We all did. It's on the recorded calls as well:

I knew you'd be there. I think you've been watching me for a long time.

Even the live Melissa sticks to the script at the beginning of the call. I think it's just a general comment about Melissa having finally figured out that we aren't really the crew of the Apocalypso, but people who've been watching her via the ILB site.

Oh good. Like I said, I was freaking out.

Re: Melissa Actress

Is it hard to accept that one of the women involved with the project could be a decent voice actress?

Nope. And honestly, I have to say, having spoken to her three times now... "decent" is definitely the right word. It is so nerve-racking to actually speak to her, that I (and, I'm sure, many others) were totally blown away the first time, and left with the impression of a great actress. But as I spoke to her again and again, I started noticing little flaws, pauses, stutters, and bits of bad inflection. Now granted, she is (at least to some extent) improvising, and I'm sure her job is very hard, but she just doesn't come across as a professional voice actress on the caliber of Jan or Sophie. The Sleeping Princess, on the other hand, still wows me every time I listen to hmrpita's recording.

I must respectfully point out that there is a tremendous difference between performing a set script -- with maybe even a few days to rehearse -- and improvising dozens of conversations in a single day. It doesn't mean she's any less talented than her colleagues. (In fact, don't I remember people complaining early on that they thought Jan's voice actress wasn't so good? Guess they've come around by now. Mr. Green )

I concur -- talking to Melissa was like playing an RP with a very good "dungeon master"...and while it wasn't so flawless that I ever forgot that I was playing a game, she's definitely the best dungeon master I've ever gamed with, you know?

Oh, and to throw something random out there: occasionally I would say or ask something unexpected (e.g. "What is the version number of your copy of the SPDR?"), and during the silence that followed while she was accessing the answer (*cough*), I believe I could hear typing in the background...

The voice actress, Kristen Rutherford, told the hilarious other half to this story tonight. Just the previous day, she had been boning up on ILB knowledge in preparation for her live calls. The subject of SPDR version numbering came up in a conversation with the other PMs, but then something distracted them and they never got back to it.

While making a live call, she is on a headset, and the other PMs are listening in and sending IMs. When you asked the version number, she furiously typed "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" to the others. Normally any typing she does is soft and hard to notice, but this case of frustration caused her to be a little louder.

Re: [META][SPEC] Melissa's VA is a PM

Based on the transcripts and recordings of our live conversations with Melissa, I'd bet that her voice actress is one of the ARG's designers.

It doesn't effect the game one whit, but when the game ends, I'd be really fascinated to learn whether Melissa was voiced by a team (an actress at a terminal plus a lightning-fast typist, or something like that) or by a lone Jill-of-all-trades with a great voice, great improv skills, and a designer's knowledge of the ins and outs of the game.

So the answer appears to be: Independently hired actress of immense talent, who became sufficiently involved over the course of the ARG -- as one would have to, I suppose -- to earn the title "PM."
