Yeah, typing those commands into the text adventure section of the original Frog Fractions leads to the Obama Shaving Simulator.

In regards to the reddit post, I think it is likely the PM was involved, as he recently tweeted (@mogwai_poet) about the subreddit /r/isthisfrogfractions2, likely indicating he is following our progress and searching sites like reddit for players of the ARG. He has also tweeted about Flash decompiling and 'butts'

EDIT: Also, his location on twitter is Berkeley, so there's a good chance this UC Berkeley 'meet-up' is legit / not another rick roll.

Does this sound awfully like a Chef program to anyone else? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chef_(programming_language)#Chef)

I'm too lazy to find out, but I thought I would chip in. You guys are a lot better than me at this ARG anyway Smile

It seems that a Chef program requires 'ingredients' to be defined at the start of the program, e.g.

Code:

Ingredients.
 33 g chocolate chips
 100 g butter
 54 ml double cream

I assume these definitions determine the output, so without putting definitions to these ingredients, I don't think we could create a valid program.

So, is anyone here actually physically able to go to Berkeley Campus in April? That seems like its the next major clue, so it would be good to know that someone here can attend and document what happened.....

The gameboy ROM rick-roll might not be a dead end.

Running the full brainfuck code in a different interpreter and with an empty stdin outputs the following:

The bottom looks a lot like a secret code for gameboy, where the white / black squares correspond to A and B buttons.

I can't find any assignment of those squares that makes anything special happen. I did discover that pressing START seems to stop the ROM from running, requiring a reset of VBA, though. Probably just me.

Is there any way to decompile ROMs? That'd be the easiest way to confirm it as a dead end, if it's doable.

If it helps, here's a direct link to the GBA ROM file.

http://twinbread.com/castlevania_passacaglia_of_disrepair.rom

(You'll probably have to change the three letter extension from .rom to .gba to get the emulator to run it. I had no luck getting anything new from it.)

Which interpreter was this run in? I've tried a number of different interpreters and they all either work properly or do nothing on input. It seems most likely that this is just a bug in the interpreter, but if it is a bug then it's a very strange one. (BTW, if you translate the white squares to 'B's, the left arrows to 'U's, the down arrows to 'T's, and the black squares to 'S's, the result is "BUTTSBUTTSB" again. Just saying.)

EDIT: Yes, it's definitely a bug in the interpreter. By the looks of things, this particular interpreter treats empty stdin as if it were full of NULLs (U+0000). This means that when the BF code tries to subtract numbers from that zero, it overflows. Assuming the BF interpreter is using 16-bit integers, then the result of subtracting 2, then 21, then 20, 20, 19, 2, 21, 20, 20, 19, and finally 2 from 65536 (2^16) would be →↓↓■→↓↓■, which is the result you saw.

Is there a way of decompiling ROMs in a similar fashion to .swf? If there is, it would be useful to make sure it is a dead end.

EDIT: sorry for the duplicate question, I didn't see kingbobson's post above.

I think VBA has a built in decomp under Tools > Disassemble, however I wouldn't know where to start in looking through that mess. Shocked

Probably clutching at straws here, but as we're talking about ROM files... is that C64 PRG file just an image, or could there be something more?

There appears to be Morse Code at the end of that output as well. __ (M) .__ (W), assuming those underscores count as two characters. If they count as one, it will be _ (T) ._ (A). Uncertain if there's any relevance to this.

GBA ROMs are compiled binaries. They aren't as easy to reverse engineer as Flash SWFs. There are tile viewers though, so you can look through graphical data. Most emulators actually have VRAM viewers built in (they have to load the VRAM to display it as a game anyway), so perhaps look at those? They would only show data loaded into memory though, and that might not be everything in the ROM. I would look, but I am on mobile and don't have the tools available.

Are we also assuming that any occurrence of BUTTSBUTTSB is a dead end? Or are we counting occurrences for a password or so something we can use later? Are these substrings that should be added together? Just some thoughts.
