Help from psammead@greywethers.net

Sorry for the cross posting, but I'm not sure where to put this. I added this to the interaction section too.

well, friend

the user name you ask me for
is right before your eyes
I've told you once, I've told you twice
it's really no surprise

the password starts with an alias
another name by which I'm known
with letter pairs to be removed
to be left with letters eight alone

one more step to find the answer
think about the names so strange
of pages you have seen in passing
and your eight letters can be changed

Psammead, the name of our sender from greywethers.net, means "Sand Fairy".

Book Description
To Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, the house in the country promises a summer of freedom and play. But when they accidently uncover an accident Psammead--or Sand-fairy--who has the power to make wishes come true, they find themselves having the holiday of a lifetime, sharing one thrilling adventure after another.
Asleep since dinosaurs roamed the earth, the ill-tempered, odd--looking Psammead --with his spider-shaped body, bat's ears, and snail's eyes --grudgingly agrees to grant the children one wish per day. Soon, though the children discover that their wishes have a tendancy to turn out quite differnetly than expected. Whatever they wish whether it's to fly like a bird, live in a mighty castle, or have an immense fortune --something goes terribly wrong, hilariously wrong.

Then an accidental wish has horrible consequences, and the children are faced with a difficult choice: to let an innoncent manbe charged with a crime or to lose for all time their gift of magical wishes. Five Children and It is on of E. Nesbit's most beloved tales of enchantment. This deluxe gift edition, featuring twelve beautiful watercolor paintings by Caldecott medalist Paul O. Zelinsky, is sure to be treasured addition to every family's library. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From the book "Five Children and It"
by E. Nesbit

I think maybe the user name is "shadowtalk" Question

user name SPEC

I believe the user name is going to be friend. Both the grey wether site and the letter to email both state friend. I may be wrong but i strongly believe the user name is friend.

I agree that "friend" is the likely username. On the site it does say "welcome friend"

"pages you have seen in passing" probably refers to the pages showing the additions.

so "names so strange" would be the "1+6.html", "3+4.html" etc.

Confused Question

SPEC: Possible password

In my email to psammead, I asked for help and mentioned that one spec was "san diego". I also mentioned other things that shadowtalk had said. The above reply was the answer to questions.

OK guys, here's my theory and I think we have all been on the right track. Now to just put it all together.

1. the password starts with an alias
another name by which I'm known
with letter pairs to be removed
to be left with letters eight alone

grumpyboy came up with "adignoes" from Standing Stones, an alias for Greywethers. The above mentions that the password starts with an alias by which I am known. So, it starts with "S" (standing stones) and ''adigonoes" anagrams into SAN DIEGO. Also, the other name for psammead is the "sandfairy". So, more than likely, the password is San Diego. (Cem and Diandra already came up with this too-I guess it was in my subconcious. Totally forgot what and who mentioned San Diego before. DUH again for me Very Happy Sorry guys).

**edit- nevermind. the last paragraph says "names so strange of pages you have seen in passing and your eight letters can be changed". San Diego is not strange. But I think the password still begins with "S".

2. the user name you ask me for
is right before your eyes
I've told you once, I've told you twice
it's really no surprise

I have no idea. I keep going over my email and I don't see it. It's obviously right before my eyes.
Friend, friends, hugh, stones, stone do not work. Assuming, that is, that SanDiego is the password. And if it's case sensive..... I've tried all lower case, the S and D in caps, space between San Diego, no space in all tries.

BTW, here is my email that I sent. Maybe someone else will see it.

Well, "eyes" is another candidate for username. He's mentioned it twice.

More help

Yep, definitly not San Diego Confused

yes friend you are correct
an answer you have found
the user name I've given you
the first one you wrote down
(friend, see my email below. Thank you to phensley and grumpyboy Very Happy )

the password is a different case
though lower it is too
by many names I am known
and you have named a few

since you have named it i can confirm
that if it's stones they're standing
but even after take away
the encryption is demanding

but there's one for each yet two per one
on every page of signs and sums

so pay attention in your passing
a name can tell you many things
"a ragman" you're not looking for
it's time to do some ciphering

These are the names I mentioned:

Now as for your username...
> You have told me once, you have told me twice, but where? In our previous
> correspondence? It's not right in front of my eyes. Am I supposed to use the
> left over letters from Standing Stones? Or just the same amount of letters

In every problem there is a 2 and a 1 (except the third one). Now how that relates to the letters left from Standing Stones-adingoes- I have no idea.

"a ragman" you're not looking for

A ragman is an anagram for anagram. So seems we will have to find a way to use the equations and the letters remaining to find the password.

here is what i sent to psammead

I unlike the others

here is his reply

since you have named it i can confirm
that if it's stones they're standing

My guess is that we will not be anagraming the password. We will somehow have to transform the left over letters into something else. (numbers) and what to then I don't know.

The definition of Transmute (from gw site) To change from one form, nature, substance, or state into another; transform: Alchemists tried to transmute lead into gold.

therefore we must change the letters to what??

just my opinion

How about taking those left over letters (in order).
Add or subtract to new letters?
I don't have time to do it this morning, but let me know if that works.

standing stones -> adigones (8 letters left).
How many equations?
Add or Subtract from each letter to make the password?
Just spec'ing, hope it works for someone.

One for each (letter of the alphabet?)
Yet two per one (maybe a cipher where the I/J are grouped together?)

There are 13 equation pages.
I think we're confident that we're dealing with an 8 letter password.

The 2 numbers in every page name equals 26 individual, unique numbers.
It seems likely that it's not coincidental and therefore they probably translate to the 26 letter alphabet.

But what to do with the equations on the pages....?I have been staring and trying and staring some more without luck.

We also know that this:

1+6.html
3+7=10
1+2+6=10

is not an error but was placed there with purpose.

I have also tried to look at the equations as they are on the page, rather than left to right. I looked at them as wholes (i.e. instead of 2+2=4 and 1+1 =2......looking at it the way it is on the page as 21+21 = 42)

No luck there either....

I think the key to figuring this out could lie in the equation that "just doesn't add up". But where to take it is beyond me... Very Happy
