cross-post

Since it came up, I posted this elsewhere:

Quote:
I have no doubt that Marzian talked to a PM, who doesn't want others profiting off of his/her hard work. Marzian's reaction is perfectly understandable in this light of that conversation. I think this will clear things up though...

This is probably a communication gap somewhere. The creatives want to protect their baby, the execs want the message spread. I think the execs win in any disagreement, since they write the checks.

I explicitly asked the Xbox product manager, Chuck Blevens, if copying and distributing the DVD was kosher at the Chicago event. He said it was. Who is he? He is the head of this marketing project. He is the one who writes the checks. He's the one in charge of these special events, including the upcoming one in NY on the release date Midnight Madness. You could say that he is, "in the know."

Here is how the Chicago conversation went:

Chuck Blevens: We assume this will get out one way or another, and that's okay with us. Feel free to share it with your friends and those who couldn't be here.

Me: "Would it be okay if we went so far as to make an .ISO of the dvd and distribute that?"

CB: Sure.

We later spoke at Dennys about the whole H2 piracy thing. He said MS will really go after anyone who pirates Halo2, and they are very much against piracy. Piracy is a huge deal to him and his team.

Summary: XBox is anti-piracy, but pro-advertisement. ILB is an advertisement. They want it distributed. If this is all a misunderstanding, I'm sure they will tell us to stop without unleashing flaming ninjas on anyone.

As CB said, the greatest thing that happened after the H2 leak was that the entire community was outraged, turning in pirates, refusing to spread spoilers and screenshots, and discouraging the act unilaterally. So, Marzian, good job.

The difference here is that Halo2 was supposed to be a black project until November 9, and it's the major cash cow for MS this fiscal year. Pirating that hurts the company. ILB is a promotion for Halo2. MS pays money to get the word out. Viral marketing. The thing about viral marketing is that the virus doesn't get very far if you make it illegal to spread. They want us to spread it.

So, there's a bittorrent download on the beewiki. If you can't get it through the swag lottery (which you can if you are entered into it, as we've secured around 50 extras). If the PM's are against this, they will let us know in a civil manner.

I'm willing to pay shipping for anyone who's willing to send any of the swag to me. I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico if that has any bearing for anyone. Add me to the lottery or PM/email me [supersloth AT gmail.com]

me, three

I started following the game after Niel Stephenson mentioned it in a ./ interview a few weeks ago. I'd love to get my hands on a DVD, and I'll be happy to pay shipping.

I have a few disks I'm willing to give away. I'd like to be put into the lotto for any other swag. And I'm self-nominating Hornet to be put into the lotto as well, if he hasn't done it himself already.

I'd like to get in on this lottery if I could.

I know it's too late, but my access to computers has been really limited lately, so I couldn't really have done it any sooner. I'd primarily like to get a DVD, if there are enough(and if I can't get one from Dana). And I'd be willing to pay the shipping costs.

It seems that there are a few people with extra discs and nobody to give them to... I hereby volunteer to take one of those burdensome DVDs off of your hands Smile

I'm trying to get one through Dna as well, but I'm hedging my bets when it comes to something I want as badly as this... and if I end up with two, I'll give my extra away to another beekeper.

I'll gladly pay shipping (should be cheap, a DVD doesn't weigh too much), please PM me if you could help an event-and-dropsite-less beekeeper out. Thanks.

You can still email Dana (DanatwingSPLATgmail.com) to request a copy to be mailed to you.

Superjerms, thanks for the post about Microsoft giving rights to distribute the DVD. Do you have any means to get an official statement (as opposed to a paraphrased one) from Chuck that we could link to?

I also appreciate the way in which you phrased your post. It's nice to know that people can at least see the reason I'm so dedicated, even if they think I've gone off the deep end with my passion in pursuing my goals. Wink

You rule.

It sounds like you guys scored a whole bunch of extra DVDs, which is really cool. I hope there's enough to give everyone who wants one one. Aside from the content, which can be downloaded, it would be cool to own something 'official'.

And I'm glad the whole online distribution thing got sorted out. Very Happy

And for the record, I'm agreeing with Thoth about hedging my bets. I would appreciate any offers of a DVD. Smile

Yeah, since all these extra DVDs seem to be popping up here's my humble request to get in on the hot DVD action if it isn't too late. Considering the packaging it wouldn't be more than a couple bucks for shipping which I will gladly reimburse. Thanks!

UPDATE!

Give me a little time to set it up, folks, but there *will* be stuff.

The Microsoft people gave me a STACK o' DVDs, we have people offering extra DVDs and lanyards, so disregard everything I said previously about not being able to handle DVDs.

We *may* even raffle off an xBox live subscription that someone won but doesn't need. I have to confirm, but that will be the big-ticket item. We also have had donations of a few things from CafePress.

We also, currently, have more swag than recipients, so I'm putting in those people I told that registration was closed, and I am reopening registration until noon PDT on Sunday.

So, the lottery is on, despite the lack of swag at the events, and stay tuned.

Phaedra you rock.

edit: question, to 'register' for the swag lottery is posting here enough, or would you like a PM or an email as a confirmation that we are legitimate about this? Because I'm defenietly in, and willing to pay any shipping costs, maybe even for one or two other than myself who aren't able to pay shipping costs themselves.
