Well the REAL De La Poers were Irish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_La_Poer

I can't see how that helps much though.

He also wrote this: http://www.sff.net/people/DoyleMacdonald/d_hoard.htm which features dragons and creatures which eat people. I can't help but feel we're straying further from the answer though.

Not sure how relevant this is, but in my printing of "The Rats In The Walls" (1985, Granada press), the narrator spells his name "de le Poer", not "De la Poer". The changed version is still "Delapore" though. This gets us no closer to a solution, and I've been trying all sorts of crazy combinations all bloody night long.

Bed time now otherwise I'm going to be falling asleep in my lessons, and my students are worse than C'thulhu when they're not supervised...

Foilhead has weighed in with yet another clue that I don't get....

Human flesh, what do Eaters eat, RATS, the giant rat of Sumatra, I just don't know.

http://foilheadwhy.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/im-still-here.html

I'll be gone 3-4 days- Good luck with this one, I won't miss it!

Edit to add:

Wish I had some fava beans.

which gets you

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I've been getting information from seamen coming into Celephaïs from the Great Southern Sea and talking about seeing 'Dragons in the sky' described as long giant black and red worms. These 'Dragons' have not yet attacked any ships however it is definitely causing a stir.

Edit to apologise for not catching booba's post.

Gah I tried that too! except without the space. Nice catch though guys. Did anyone mail empire control with strategies or inventions yet?

Grats all!! Took a lot of pokes but we finally got there =)

On the subject of strategies with Empire control, I had the following conversation:

Quote:
Bonnybridge should be our first target as this is where our large number of our troops are and once reclaimed these troops can be distributed elsewhere. In addition the lack of our own supplies in this area makes this the priority before our troops sucumb to low morale and possible desertion.

What is our current estimate of the numbers of their troops in this area and our troops in Falkirk?

First we need to target the airships west of Bonnybridge, no point in trying a head on attack as we would likely lose ours and theirs and with the attrition, a simple chess piece exchange does not aid us. We therefore need to take them out quickly. Since food is short it would be considerably easier to poison their supply and likely that a few poisoned batches would take out a much larger group of soldiers. Shoreleave, however short tends to lead troops into hedonism to escape if only for a brief moment the tortures of war and so this tactic could cause a sudden loss of those able to man their ships. The ships must need to dock and take on supplies at some point so it could be done then. Intelligence is needed as to how often they dock, how long they dock for, where they dock. The main requirement is to keep them on the ground long enough. How are they powered/controlled. With knowledge of our own ships, can we disable them even if only temporarily so that our troops can swarm the remaining troops.

There isnt much we can do for now about the supernatural element that I am aware of so i think we need to target what we do know.

Once the airships are disabled or at least the crew crippled then our troops in Falkirk can move into the town and fight to reclaim it. This push should take place ONLY if the initial attack is successful otherwise the airships will take to the air and our troops will be massacred.

Our corvettes will remain nearby should their airships manage to get off the ground. With a reduced crew and the hopeful chaos of some command being wiped out, their airships power in the sky should be greatly reduced. If they do get off the ground, we should make all attempts to capture rather than destroy them. An increased number of ships for us and possible technology or intel gains are not to be ignored. Due to the speed of the dreadnought class ships further North I am not sure it is worth bringing them down in the time we have and this would also tip our hand that a strike was imminent.

Once we have Bonnybridge we should move onto Dun Troddan. The main front abroad I believe is a diversion causing us to waste our troops constantly crashing on the shore of the enemy and so I think we should also play a defensive game there. The homeland is where we need to concentrate and then as you say the King can once more move freely in his own domain.

In addition your reports suggest you have a spy or your communications
are being intercepted. I would seriously consider an alternative method
of encrypting your communique.

God save the King!

And their response:

Quote:
Agent Russell,

These are all valid points and I commend you on presenting them to us in
such a short timescale. I have submitted your plans of action onto
Captain Carter who is in charge of the Battle Group in the north.

Russian airships used the same motive power that we do and the buoyancy
lift of Heliumite along with GrapherIron covering all the vulnerable
areas which makes most airships these days difficult to attack head on.
Of course there are areas where heavy bombardment will cause damage.
Many covert operations have been launched against the enemies ships over
the past year and each time they failed because the enemy knew we were
coming. The enemies ability to move between two distant points almost
instantaneously is a problem that has pushed us into a standstill.

We have changed our methods encryption on a daily basis, in some cases
it is obvious that the enemy knows what we have ordered in before the
Battle Group Commanders have received their orders. As stated in the
War Reports this is no simple fight.

You are probably right regarding the battle in Europe hence the
stalemate. That is why every scrap of intelligence must be ferreted out
from every known source, once we know how the enemy does what it does we
can come up with ways to combat it.

Control.

Message from Foilhead:

Quote:
Rumours of the Front
The war begun over a year ago now and it seems like more innocents died every day despite the assurances from the Empire that we have fought the enemy to a stand still. Bonnybridge and its children still in the hands of the enemy, the rumours I have collected are worrying indeed. There is talk of cannibalism on the battlefields of Europe whilst the news from Bonnybridge is that civilians held there are going missing. My sources are close to the town but cannot leave for risk of capture by Russian troops. They however can see some sort of light north of the town during the night. The rail link from Falkirk has been cut close to St Helen's Loch, a coal train derailed there.

I have used my considerable resources to help as best I can with the fight but the enemy seems to be several steps ahead of us which can mean only one of two things we have traitors in my midst or the enemy have an undetectable method of intelligence gathering. Both possibilities are quite worrying I am not sure which I would prefer.

One of my sources however has thrown up a name that may help one Du Pre Alexander, he was a director of the EIC before the Empire dispersed it so my source tells me. Aside from that there is not much on him except that he has traveled quite considerably and a number: 729.

Myrovh:

Quote:
Du Pre Alexander a legendary figure in some circles much like Ozymandias was.

Everything is connected, nothing is trivial. Gods they say is in the details and some gods you do not want to meet better to follow the clues in the details and avoid the gods altogether.

This would suggest the 729 webpage although looking at the original thread, this is an historic page.

http://729-inc.wikidot.com/du-pre-alexander
http://729-inc.wikidot.com/cube

Edit...scratch that, the search box is disabled so i dont think that site will help us currently although the info is good to bear in mind.
