EDIT: Clever re the sundial date request from your post below, Russell. In Sister Mary's 29/6/1969 entry she recounts "Carrie's Story" which also would have transpired on the 28th. Careful 'tho what you wish for b/c there's a new cipher on the site with a shocking-long letter string. Shocked

Thanks Amandel, was busy updating a wiki on another Arg =)

Whilst we await an update on the website, I have asked the empire for the Sister mary entry on the date from the sundial.. Might be related but might not Laughing

Hmmm there are far too many x's and z's in that cipher for my liking...

Have been stuck in a lot of meetings today so havent had much chance to work on the latest cipher. Based on the spirals, I believe it is going to be a route cipher but there are a lot of unknowns:

1. Starting point of (centre, top right, bottom right etc)
2. Direction of spiral (clockwise or counterclockwise)
2. Is there further encryption i.e vigenere with sundial or sextant as passcode, number 261 to be used also as key?

Will see if Ambrose can at least answer the first two tonight on the chat session. Maybe there is some indication on the sundial. Since there are 234 characters in the code, it would suggest the code will be grouped into:

78x3, 39x6, 26x9, 13x18, 18x13, 9x26, 6x39 or 3x78

I did the 13x8 and 8x13 grid starting at top right moving clockwise to the centre but found nothing unfortunately.

Great work on sussing out "Crossing the T" (the final hints with the "T" pot were hilarious)
Sorry I'm not around to help out more Sad

Interesting new little cipher you got there!

It seems to be a change of departure from the ordinary. Going by what it isn't and a few other things. it might (just maybe) have been written here:

If you can get some of those letters Ambrose found it could be worth a shot.

Edit to add:
Foilhead keeps pointing us back here: http://729-inc.wikidot.com/zonewar and hell if I can figure out what a Jammy is.

Lots of tips on the blog as to the solve for this cipher. Have been back through all the old pages and data and the only thing i can find even close to the date on the sundial is on the moon page on 729. It lists the first moon landing as 8 days earlier.

In other news, it looks like our mad scientist may have found a cure.

Quote:
[20:00] <AmbroseR> Hello
[20:00] <AgentRussell> Hi Ambrose
[20:00] <AgentRussell> no updates as yet on the cipher you provided
[20:00] <AgentRussell> a lot of clues to sift through
[20:01] <AmbroseR> I forgot to mention that the screen cleared again after it displayed the information from Du Pre Alexander
[20:02] <AgentRussell> do tell
[20:02] <AmbroseR> It has another entry box like the last one, tried a few ideas none have worked.
[20:02] <AmbroseR> I think I was also les than clear about the spirals on the bottom of the sundial
[20:03] <AmbroseR> They look more like horns
[20:03] <AgentRussell> hmm horns
[20:03] <AmbroseR> Not sure what that means though.
[20:03] <AgentRussell> normal direction as in bent inwards?
[20:03] <AmbroseR> Like the horns of a goat I suppose
[20:04] <AmbroseR> yes they spiral inwards
[20:04] <AmbroseR> Did you get the message I send through to the Empire about the engravings?
[20:05] <AgentRussell> no, only the information that you discussed with me yesterday
[20:05] <AgentRussell> oh sorry you mean on the sextant
[20:05] <AgentRussell> yes about the moonlight
[20:05] <AmbroseR> yes and the sundial
[20:05] <AgentRussell> yes, i am convinced that the cipher forms a block of letters
[20:06] <AgentRussell> i had hoped a cube since this was the obsession of the man who created this room
[20:06] <AmbroseR> I assume it is something to do with the sea again I suppose, what with the previous riddle
[20:06] <AgentRussell> i had not condidered that so will take it on board
[20:07] <AmbroseR> Du Pre Alexander, sounds like he has traveled a lot. His name is familar too, was director of the East India Company?
[20:08] <AgentRussell> he was indeed amongst other companies
[20:08] <AgentRussell> How are you all holding up in there?
[20:09] <AmbroseR> Makes sense he would know some much about ships and the sea then. We've got plenty of food and the whiskey is lovely a smooth.
[20:09] <AmbroseR> Timmy seems to have calmed down quite a bit as well, he has even left Emma side.
[20:10] <AgentRussell> well make sure you ration the food as im not sure how long you will be in there fo. Glad to hear Timmy is doing better!
[20:11] <AmbroseR> Not sure why making tea keeps our unwanted visitor at bay but it also keep Miss Sawyer happy too.
[20:11] <AgentRussell> any more strange occurrences?
[20:11] <AmbroseR> Emma thinks it is to do with the steam the kettle makes
[20:12] <AgentRussell> interesting thought, what led her to that conclusion?
[20:13] <AmbroseR> Because only the kettle has been moved
[20:12] <AmbroseR> No nothing bad to report, the square tube is still glowing blue though. Ah! Almost forgot the the generator now says 9 out of 100.
[20:13] <AgentRussell> i think that the more we complete the linker entries the more we will increase power to the machine
[20:14] <AmbroseR> perhaps
[20:14] <AmbroseR> hope we do not run out of power
[20:14] <AmbroseR> 30 seconds goodbye
[20:14] <AgentRussell> Keep strong Ambrose
[20:15] == AmbroseR [56b366e2@gateway/web/freenode/ip.86.179.102.226] has left #RTLDunTrod []

Absolutely <3 eating lunch outdoors and reading your beaut chats with Ambrose, Russell. In that letter cipher have noticed each 9th letter spells "crazy ivan". Then each 18th letter spells "sun". Leaving 99 letters with no pattern I can discern. Truly hoping one of y'all can find one. Or as DuPre might say: 't work ye landlubbers. Smile

Good spot Amandel. I have been working off the premise that there are specifically two spirals on the sundial so perhaps two routes. I have also been looking at the number 261 and its possible meaning in regards to the other clues.

261 is related to tesseracts and considering Alexanders obsession with cubes, i hope i dont need to turn this cipher into a 3d representation of a cube Shocked

Its also 29*9 so the obsession with 9 continues.

Its a bit overcast here so no sitting out in the sun for lunch Crying or Very sad

There is also when reversed, "Monte Cristo"

well, I've looked at the letter cipher, and did not make much progress.

it is 234 characters in total, 5 lines of 52,52,52,52, and 26 letters each.

so if you break it down into 26 letter lines, it becomes

Quote:
BLHKNQTWCORGJMPSVRZFIEADUX 1
AUXKNQDEHZWTRBGJMFYPOSVICL 2
OIIEHTQZRUVKDSJBHXNAFCGYHM 3
BRNKULHXOETQAIZGMPWFSDJRCV 4
ZTXQPJWFOCDKURBMLEHNSAJGIV 5
RUXKNQBMHTWZADGJEPILOSVYCF 6
BEHKIQTWZADGJMPSVYCFNLORUX 7
ISOEHTAZRUXKDGJBWHNQFCLYSM 8
ZTXQPOTSIRCETNOMLEHNSADGIV 9

you may notice that
line 1 has many letters in common place as line 7,
line 2 has many letters in common place as line 6,
line 3 has many letters in common place as line 8,
line 4 is most unique
line 5 has many letters in common place as line 9 - and most letters that are different are the ones where line 9 spells "monte cristo" backwards.

hope this helps spur someone to solve it.

edit: line 6 and line 7 also each have the strings "WZADGJ" and "SVYCF".

THX, arthurdent, that surely helps! Now noticing in addition to the reverse "montecristo" also "the six", VI and V(sol)I. Maybe Control should be informed tho am not the correct person to explain this and to separate the wheat from the chaff here. Laughing

Ok peeps we have a ticking clock :

Quote:
[20:00] <AgentRussell> Good Evening Ambrose, how are you all holding up?
[20:00] <AmbroseR> Fine okay
[20:00] <AmbroseR> Had some thoughts about the cypher
[20:00] <AgentRussell> Well i hope theres a lot more tea still as we are continuing to have issues with it
[20:01] <AmbroseR> I don't think we will run out of tea any time soon whoever worked here love his/her tea
[20:01] <AgentRussell> we have uncovered some words like "Monte Cristo" or "Stop the six" and even "Sun" and "Crazy Ivan"
[20:01] <AmbroseR> different types too all the way from India
[20:01] <AgentRussell> that would be Mr Du Pre since he had his own tea company
[20:02] <AgentRussell> what were your thoughts then?
[20:02] <AmbroseR> I'm a landlubber myself so I do not know anything about the sea, do you know what a sextant actually does?
[20:02] <AgentRussell> Yes it allows you to measure the angle between two objects
[20:03] <AmbroseR> And how is that useful in relation to sea voyages exactly?
[20:03] <AgentRussell> you use the sun against an object on the horizon
[20:03] <AgentRussell> or moon i suppose
[20:04] <AmbroseR> what does it tell you?
[20:04] <AgentRussell> hmm bringing it up now
[20:04] <AgentRussell> whilst i look, what are the energy levels like on the machine
[20:05] <AmbroseR> Oh! Yes, it have dropped another notch down to eight now.
[20:05] <AmbroseR> excuse my typing
[20:05] <AgentRussell> not good at all, we really need to crack this as soon as possible
[20:06] <AgentRussell> my apologies that we appear to have stalled but that is not the case
[20:06] <AmbroseR> Completely agree on that, I'm pretty the air is ducted in from the outside
[20:06] <AmbroseR> if the power goes out I am worried we may run out of air
[20:07] <AgentRussell> we will solve it before then
[20:07] <AgentRussell> i have trust in us and you
[20:07] <AmbroseR> It seems odd that we have a sundial, sextent and an explorer that is interested in the sea the cypher must be related somehow
[20:08] <AgentRussell> yes our thoughts were that we follow a route as suggested by the appearance of the sextant
[20:08] <AgentRussell> but 261 is a very odd angle
[20:09] <AmbroseR> The moon, it does say on the sextant to 'Free the moonlight' so perhaps you need to be using the Moon as a point of reference
[20:10] <AgentRussell> i will bear this in mind
[20:10] <AmbroseR> Any news of the war?
[20:11] <AgentRussell> as with all wars it is pointless and violent
[20:11] <AgentRussell> we do our best to ensure the safety of the troops and civilians but it is largely a stalemate at the mometn
[20:11] <AmbroseR> Indeed have you heard anything about Bonnybridge?
[20:11] <AgentRussell> no, strangely Empire Control has been very quiet of late
[20:12] <AgentRussell> no news from Lord Blacker or Carter
[20:12] <AmbroseR> Probably does not want the enemy to know that they technically have his daughter here
[20:13] <AgentRussell> any weakness can and will be exploited but he did ask me to tell her that he loves her and he is doing everything in his power to keep her safe
[20:13] <AmbroseR> Captain John Carter, I heard of him. Brave man!
[20:13] <AmbroseR> I'll pass that on thank you.
[20:14] <AgentRussell> unfortunately another day slips by Ambrose
[20:14] <AmbroseR> Tyche will clear our paths I am sure of it.
[20:14] <AgentRussell> You are a braver soul than me.
[20:15] <AmbroseR> Have faith my friend

Oh and sister Mary has a new password file up. I found a bizarre plant called the "Egyptian Walking Onion" which was an interesting diversion.

Ok so rambling aloud, Moonlight is measured in lux and you can trace lux in that grid, i was wondering whether you then move in the same format (down then right) but switching angle each time.... Am probably clutching at straws lol

Ok so it turns out that on the Apollo 11 mission they used a sextant.... Shocked

And in fact did use 261 in their measurements:

http://tinyurl.com/mdf82rb

How on earth did we get people into space lol

well another couple of hours logged staring at it and am drowning in word soup. time to recharge my batteries Cool

Edit * ok so my questions that i am missing in trying to solve this:

1. What are the two celestial bodies that we are measuring from and too which is the purpose of a sextant
2. What do the horns (Spirals) actually look like and how is the cipher written out on the sundial
3. What is the purpose of the date other than related to all things moon.
4. A sextant doesnt go up to 261 degrees (it goes to 120 ie scales of 60 degrees) so what on earth does this sextant look like......

All good questions, R. Maybe Myrovh has answers? I've only got Ambrose's new msg solve
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Generator is holding at 8 out of 100. We are all okay, Miss Sawyer believes that the two horns on the Sundial maybe related to the Aries constellation. We heard some noises outside the big vault door earlier but it has gone quiet again.

Ok so RTL has been cancelled for this evening but have a number of clues and updates from Ambrose and Myrovh.

Myrovh suggested referring to almanacs and Ambrose hinted at Aries (I had also thought this might be the reference but was looking in the codetext rather than at an almanac).

Ok so putting all of this together I came up with the following:

https://tinyurl.com/pp4t9nf

Showing that the time was 23:00
