I doubt it's a fan thing if the trailhead was found in the official trailer, and the transformersaredangerous.com site has a load of logos and privacy policies and credits and such across the bottom, so this should be good.
So General Smith, in charge of our mission, recently went missing and the last tweet he sent was

Obviously it stinks of a code, but as nobody mentioned it we've been poked towards it with subtle hints like being told he was careful with his words, and less subtle hints such as asking if any citizens are good at decryption. I've not had a whole load of experience with decryption, mostly just ROT and such, so I'm working on it but not getting very far. Anyone better able to help?

Heya, just saw this and was wondering if this might in any way be related:

http://zsign-type.tumblr.com/

Seemed like a regular tumblr poster... except trying too hard to sound "normal". The tags are also amazingly unrelated, since it mentions Anime North, an event occurring in two months. There's also mention of the fact that Transformers are now a wanted race...

That post is from http://www.transformersaredangerous.com, the source of all of this madness.

I've been playing around with a vigenere cipher

input
zfz135uetthupehcgpkmytz

key
gawno

output
tfd135hqntlhbyhgtbemcgl

which I figured would be the right because the beginning was the Generals twitter handle and the name of the forum tfd135hq
but the rest of it just looks like useless garble
any ideas?

Not sure about clues and whatnot, but there's an update on the forum:

http://tfd135hq.freeforums.net/thread/5/logo?page=1&scrollTo=12

They want us to use social media to spread the word about this project. I wonder if that'll give us any hints, if that's the case...

Take it with a grain of salt, but it may be confirmation that our cipher is Vigenere. Will attempt it with all the key words used by the General.

I have tried to take the decoding farther:

zfz135uetthupehcgpkmytz

using one-time pad (like Vigenere, but not repeating)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
GAWNOTATAWTOWMWWFNOO - the first letters of General Smith's tweets, in chronological order, that are CAPITALISED

decodes to "tfd135hq atoutltgutohlfl"

I thinks it's still not right, but I believe closer.

Actually, I think you might have it. Now, if I'm reading this correctly...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

If we separate it out a bit we get

tfd135hq at out lt gu to hlfl

Which could be "tfd135 Head Quarters at out(?) Lieutenant go to hlfl(?)"

Apparently, googling brings up HLFL as High Level Firewall Language, which may have something to do with the General's missing fourth post on the forum...

From here on out I'm hoping you guys can come up with something.[/spoiler]

Well, I was close before, and I've got it now.

use a one-time pad of

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
GAWNOTATAWTTOWMWTWFN (CAPITAL LETTERS AT BEGINNING OF SENTENCES IN TWEETS IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER) to decrypt to "tfd135hqatoutlookdotcom", or "tfd135hq@outlook.com"

I will send an e-mail and see if there is any response.

so, I got a reply from General Smith. He is alive and working hard !

e-mail him yourself, so he has your e-mail address for future communication:

Gen Smith's email:

Quote:
Good day, Citizen
I am glad that you were able to find me. Unfortunately you had to find me during such troubling times. My absence was abrupt, but necessary.
Ever since our intelligence community was informed that a signal matching the signature of the signal we received back in 2007 was intercepted I have had a really difficult decision to make: stand by and let my country be invaded because politicians don't have the balls to act when they are faced with tough decisions, or figure out how to stop these things once and for all BEFORE they set foot on Earth.
I guess you can figure out which road I have decided to take.
It is essential that I travel this path, just as it is important for TFD 135 to continue to perform its duties. If I fail at my mission then I am afraid that Earth will be doomed. It will be the efforts of your unit that will dictate weather or not Earth and it's inhabitants are able to weather the coming storm.
I will be in touch.
General James Monroe
"General Smith"

The updates from the website have been going into my spam folder via Gmail, so I just now saw the updates. Dunno if there's any true viral stuff considering how soon the movie will be coming out. I called the number, it let's you leave a VM. I'll do it tomorrow.

As for the site itself, there's cities with newspaper clippings, dunno if that's a clue or not. I feel like if this was a true ARG, there would have been more.
