I think in the english version, they went from being a couple, to "cousins".

I won't live in a community that robs men of the right to marry their cousins!

God, I miss the nineties.

Ahh, yes... you mean the production company? I loved Inspector Gadget when I was a kid.

Yeah, they dubbed the first two seasons of Sailor Moon from the original Japanese (localising many elements to America - because kids can't relate to other countries :rolls eyes:), with apparently a very long hitaus in completing the dubbing of the second season due to poor toy sales (I was eight when the series started, I think, fifteen when they dubbed the rest of the episodes) and they did it for the Toonami block on Cartoon Network.

I never got to see those episodes, sadly Sad

According to a friend of mine, the third and fourth seasons were dubbed by another company who basically didn't want to pay the original dub's cast full-rates, so they got a bunch of cheap soundalikes instead. Worse then that, the actual direction to the voice actors is pretty horrible, which is apparently quite sad, because in Japan, the third season of Sailor Moon is regarded as the best.

Intrestingly enough, the rights to the episodes for both companies were not renewed, as Naokao Takenuchi (the creator of Sailor Moon) really hated the changes which were made in the episodes and basically closed off any English rights until recently - and a new dub will be made under her approval (she is deeply involved in casting) . (Apparently, the finale to the first season was edited into one episodes and the girls originally died to sacrafice Serena, only for them to be 'captured' in the dub, The Negaverse were originally the more omnious sounding Dark Kingdom and apparently she really hated that Uranus and Neptune's relationship was cast into something very different)

I miss the nineties as well. Gargoyles, Beast Wars, Batman: The Animated Series - and when The Simpsons was funny Sad

I don't know whether it's a function of my being a huge fan of some Hong Kong actors and actresses (such as Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, who are not only among the world's greatest screen actors but are totally fluent in English), but I've come to detest dubbing (both in live-action and in animated films), as so many damn voice actors are dreadful--City on Fire was about the worst case I've ever seen in a serious film; it's hard to wreck that movie, but this came durn close). I've never seen Sailor Moon, but I vaguely remember this--was this in the late eighties or early nineties? The limits of my exposure to Japanese animated series was pretty much restricted then to Voltron, which rather rocked, and Tranzor Z, which rather didn't (though the rotten American voice actors had something to do with that).

The nineties was kind of a Second Golden Age of TV (at least for me), starting with The Simpsons (when it was hilarious) and both seasons of Get A Life! and leading all the way up to Family Guy before it became misogynistic and racist and embodying everything that here in New England we've tried hard to purge. With government conspiracy Sci-Fi shows, Law and Order and Homicide when they were edgy, and two shows co-starring Ming-Na Wen (though neither was really any good).

I'm glad to hear the creator of Sailor Moon has control over dubbing, etc., now. I really detest when shows get decontextualized and Americanized. I don't see why that's needed. My wife's from Japan, and we've had some discussion about this. She's rather surprised, actually, about the very warm reception some anime fans have for My Neighbor Totoro (I think that's the name), when there's a dark dimension to that. It sorta reminds me of when the original Metal Gear came out and was made over into some sort of jingoistic "U!S!A!" crap thriller with loosely veiled allusions to Libya. The creator was scandalized because of the whole drama he'd built into the game that he disowned what Konami USA did to it.

I would just like everyone to know, there are literally dozens of people living in New York City today.

Good to see that they're finally bouncing back from that Cloverfield incident.

Dude if you're going to make jokes like that just go somewhere else, some people are still grieving.
