...this is a scary coincidence. I can't believe this happened again--once again, by a girl who worships Slender Man like a god for some stupid reason. SLENDER MAN IS A BAD GUY. WHY CAN'T STUPID KIDS GET THAT STRAIGHT?!

And...if this happens a THIRD time, then...heck, I might ask myself a second question whether Slender Man exists or not...

Wow. That is a rather unfortunate development.

ETA: After checking out some other sources regarding this story, it appears that the girl herself did not actually say anything about Slender Man (at least not that the police have stated), but rather her mother has expressed a belief that the stabbing attack could have been Slender-Man related because her daughter has a keen interest in Slenderman and other "dark" things.

Misaimed fandom is hardly anything new. An author or other creator can go absolutely out of his/her way to demonstrate that a character has no remotely redeeming qualities whatsoever, and that character will attract a devoted fan base who can't wait to make up reasons why he's really just a misunderstood good guy who would make a very good slash fic partner.

It's an interesting psychological phenomenon. To hazard a guess, I suppose it might have something to do with "otherness", and certain people identifying with that trait.

Y'know I know where you're going with that but I don't think we should really think about that too hard, the possibility of anything...*ahem* "real"... going on is pretty much non existent, not that I really have to state that because we're all here for enjoyment of creating fictional scenarios

EDIT: Or anything too out of the norm, it's just stupid kids being stupid kids, this one probably snapped for one reason or another and is now taking the "I can't remember it" slendervlog cliche as an actual excuse, at least that's my opinion.

The girl in question didn't say anything about slenderman but since the mother cast blame on him it's just as bad. Plus the girl was described as wearing a mask and pulled-up hoody. Now the media have an actual series to put their crosshairs on.

Well no, it's not just American paranoia that they're trying to exploit. Other countries will surely hear of these attacks due to this second incident and making accusations with a lack of knowledge isn't a trait exclusive to the US. If anything they have more nimrods to influence and pit against the mythos. And since a attacker wore garb identical to the character Hoody it wouldn't take long for media outlets to throw together some wild idea that such-and-such series influenced this. Even though it's pretty much fact that the first attack influenced this as well as....
