 		You know, I'm thinking that Firebrand is not trying to fulfill the timeline, but change it, if that makes any sense. Firebrand is part of a timeline where he had lost to the Collective, and this time around he's trying to help Noah defeat the Collective. Makes sense?

When I wrote my history thesis too many years ago than I'd care to indicate, I was in a similar situation. I wrote it on the Crusades, and at the time wonderful resources like Google Translate and Medieval Sourcebook weren't around (Medieval Sourcebook might've been, but I didn't have access to it at the time, so I can't be sure or be bothered to check). Most of the primary documents were written in twelfth century French and Arabic, except William of Tyre's works which were a mix of Latin and some Old French early translation. The only experience I'd had with a foreign language was college Latin and a semester of Arabic I took before realizing that I had zero chance of successfully learning a different alphabet.

So, I painstakingly sat with dozens of reference books, teaching myself a bit as I went, relying on a few secondary documents from people who could read it more fluently, and slowly but surely looking up odd words in various dictionaries as I found them. I did wish I had someone who spoke the languages fluently so that I could find out the exact idioms and nuances of some of the texts, but there really wasn't any help for it at the time.

It was a hellacious struggle, but I wound up getting it done.

With tools available now, I don't think Noah will have nearly the amount of trouble I had. He'll be able to at the very least transcribe it into a word document and translate it in Google. It won't give a perfect translation-- nuances and idioms again-- but he'll be able to figure out most of it.

Plus, that could be a cool twist later on- a poor translation that left out a subtle difference between German and English spoken word that could send Noah down the wrong path and leave him in a disastrous situation!

Or, I don't know. Maybe that's too ludicrous. But the nerd in me craves language-based hijinkery with horrifying consequences.

I think we're forgetting one important thing here. The internet is full of people who can translate the shit that's in the journal. There's bound to be someone in the TT fanbase that knows german.
