[META] Bad journalism and ILB

I was thinking of getting cable, but that article over on G4TechTV.com may have changed my mind. Are they always that sloppy on their coverage? I mean, mistaking "Melissa" as the pseudonym of a PM instead of an in-game character is pretty bad and easily corrected by some investigating.

Heck, Clamatius has done better over on the Fireflies wiki, all pre-chewed for easy digestion. Or for an entire dramatis personae how about the characters page on the same site. *sigh*

Then again, G4 just boosted their article from Gamespot and merely cut it down. *sigh* redux.

-- Steve's starting to see why network TV and print news is so dreadful lately. Everybody's quoting everybody else and nobody's actually doing any research.

I think you could argue that Melissa is the "woman who created the whole ARG", since from beginning to end its been about her.

Like any other game, only the hardcore fans are going to get it right.

Pretty sad that they can't even write their own terrible article, they have to borrow it from another terrible source. Once again proving that G4 has no redeeming value.

If you were looking to get cable for G4tv, it's a good thing you found out now! It is a matter of public record that G4tv has been found responsible for lowering IQ, raised blood pressure, depression, lost public esteem, and herpes. Be glad you figured this out now, it probably saved you from ending up like Oedipus.

As a general rule of thumb, journalists don't know anything about what they're writing about.

Pretty much every time I hear/see/read something in mainstream media that I happen to know a lot about, they are missing important points, have a bunch of stuff wrong or have totally misunderstood it.

*sigh*

An example: my father is an aeronautical engineer, and has worked on many different planes in his life. We were watching network news (back in the UK) and there was a story about an accident at the airport where part of the aircraft's tail broke off as the aircraft was taking off. They were claiming that the plane could have crashed, killing all aboard, etc. - except that in fact (according to my father) they were low and slow enough (they had video of it) that pretty much the whole tail could have fallen off and they'd have been able to land it.

So, given all this - what can you conclude? Whenever you hear/see/read something in the mainstream media and you don't know much about it, assume that a lot of what they are saying is misinformed or plain wrong. Sad, but true.

Ahh, I think back to the days when TechTV was just that..TechTV. In San Francisco. They had good some good programming that spanned a lot of tech genres. Exactly what their title "TechTV" says. Then Comcast bought them and whored them out as TechTVG4. Now you get crap like 20 hours of nothing but Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas programming. Yeah, TWENTY HOURS of product placement and ads. For one game. W. T. F.

G4 was fun when it first started - it had the same kind of low-budget programming that MTV had when it first started. Reruns of Starcade (an early 1980's video game based game show) was one of my favorites. Then they dropped the hokey stuff, dropped Starcade, and tried to add more glitz to their shows. The whole thing bombed, so they combined it with TechTV, and now the channel's nearly unwatchable. Worse, the merged channel - G4TechTV - takes up two spots on my cable listings (one where G4 used to be, one where TechTV used to be)

I pretty much just got cable to get the cable Internet Very Happy

-DS-
And Cartoon Network, of course.

Agreed, 100%. Kind of puts a worrying spin upon the media when you stop and think about it for too long.

Only redeeming things on G4TechTV is The Screensavers and Anime Unleashed. The first having changed relatively little, while the second is really nice, but they keep screwing with the schedule and pissing me off. I mean, I know they *claim* Americans have short attention spans, but wtf is with showing a few episodes of one series, then jumping to a second, then back to the first, etc., but never actually completing the damn series?!? Drives me nuts. Then again, Cartoon Netowork pulls the same thing. Inu Yasha isn't even over as a series yet, but its time slot on Saturdays now has had Read Or Die The Movie, Animatrix and who the heck knows what this week.. Gundam Seed now is apparently running on Friday night, instead of Saturday as well, etc. Make up your damn minds and stop screwing with the schedule so we know when the damn things we actually watch the channels for are bloody on people!!! Oh, Gundam Seed is actually now one when the second .hack series was shown, so where the hell did that go now....? I think its the idiots running the networks that have the short attention spans imho.
