Games Based on Supposedly Real Events

Here, I'm not talking about the TINAG thing where you pretend everything is really happening or anything like that. I'm talking about puppetmasters. Is it ever acceptable to base a game on something happening IRL? (Besides a product or movie release, I mean)

I was on a forum a few weeks ago and saw a post that interested me. This person was describing really bizarre things happening to him, and asking for advice. People gave advice as if they believed the whole thing were true, but what he was saying sounded impossible. It wasn't something that could happen in the real world.

I honestly thought it was a trailhead, but nobody else seemed to be thinking anything except "this is really happening to this guy." It was really weird. it involved stuff moving without being moved, like a ghost was doing it, and also letters from an unknown address in New York.

There weren't a lot of identifying details in the post, and I was wondering if maybe it would be possible to base a game on that? Or would that be cruel and offensive? I honestly think the post was a sort of creative fiction, but I can't be sure.

I just think it would make a good game. But I don't think I can do that, because a) what if this stuff really happened to this guy (or he thought it happened)? Capitalizing on that would be cruel, or b) it's some kind of fiction project of its own, in which case any game I made would be plagiarism.

Thoughts?

ETA: I'm not posting a link to the post. It was deleted by the moderators of the forum for being "off-topic" after it received a dozen or so replies. Plus, it could be some guy really in need of help, and that would be cruel. And nothing in it lead to anything else, so I doubt it was a game. Fiction, possibly, but not a game.
