From what I've heard, its not that there is no ending...
Halo 2 Spoilers Contained Herein :
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Halo 2 ends with the MC pretty much going to the Covenant homeworld. The only way to end the war, now that the Covvies know of Earth, is to defeat the Covenant at their homeworld.

I would jump for joy at Phaedra's prospect, except that even Bungie isn't saying if they are going to continue this particular game line or move on to something else - can't give you a quote, but I read an interview, either on Bungie.net or somewhere else.
So, I am holding out, hoping, because I don't like to be left hangin'...

Nuh uh. The Sergeant said in Halo 4 he gets a woman. They wouldn't lie to us, would they?

But I thought

There were loads of homeworlds for the Covenant, because they're made up of a whole load of species?

Like I speculated in the ILB Ending thread (Accurately, I might not-so-humbly add)...
Every good storyteller knows that a good tale ends leaving you with more questions than answers. It leaves you thinking, speculating about the rest of the story. It keeps you thinking about it long after the story is done.
The ILB story actually was a lot less open-ended than I expected.

Bungie! I am buying Halo 2 for the story, first and foremost. Multi-player takes a distant second for me.
[labeling this SPEC because I haven't played the game yet]
You know, I really didn't prepare myself to be DISAPOINTED with the single-player part of Halo 2. This was just NOT a possible outcome on Nov. 9th. My gut was telling me it could suck, (all the hype for the game, and the hype being ONLY for the multi-player part) but I was too busy beekeeping to listen. But now there seems to be a good possibility that Halo will not meet my expectations. We won't find out until tonight, so I guess I should prepare myself for this. :-/

honestly, I do not want to be unfair... how could the story of halo2 compare with this? I am sure, for what it is, it will be beyond awesome, but not too many video games have made me run the extremes in emotions that this ARG has. I enjoyed the Halo story, but I never enjoyed it enough to buy it... opting to play at friends' houses, but this story has left me wanting MORE!!!!
