[META] For those who are going to a midnight madness event..

What do you expect to do / see at your store tonight?

I know for me, I checked with my EB (we actually have 3 in our tri-city area, the one I'll be at being the least of the 3 I'm sure), and they said they had 400 preorders, 700 with LE... but they said apparently there's at least going to be a MS rep there, probably with some draws and whatnot, but he said they've got a time range officially going from 12am to 3am... what's going to happen in those 3 hours, I have no idea...

but I'm going with a couple friends to try to get in line first, and we're going to see if we can get an xbox and tv/projector set up in the line to play some halo while we wait Smile we'll be outside though, and there was some light snow today Shocked so we'll have to see... funny thing is, if other people think the same thing... maybe I should take my router too, and potentially get 16 player multiplayer going outside the mall tonight! haha! Oh and I'm definitely taking my camera... Wink

what else do some people have planned (who aren't going to a specific huge opening, like Times Square)

I can't say mine will be a big deal, but a bunch of the local blockbusters are holding tournaments from 9pm to 1am or so.

The grand prize for the tourny winner is a brand spankin new copy of Halo 2. I plan on leaving with two copies... Wink

I dunno how off we're going at my Gamestop, but we're at least buying food for our guys in line.

I'm going to try to rig up a DVD player to play the most crucial parts of the ILB story, trying to time the end of Jersey's last .wav at 11:59 pm. ^^;

Midnight Madness? *laughs* What madness is this? My friends already have a copy of Halo2! I've already owned them with dual Needlers! What more could you possibly want?

I'll tell you what, and thats Halo2 for PC. But I'll settle for owning on my third ever time on an Xbox. Laughing

My buddies and I are going to the local Gamestop, because that's where we preordered back in July. I'm not sure what they are going to be up to but we're gonna go at about 10. I'm bring my video camera just in case but I imagine it will be line up, get halo2, go home... I could be wrong though.

Any other ARGers in Salem, OR? Maybe we'll see you.

*Slothboy suspects he is alone in this, the armpit of Oregon*

Angry mob

I just checked with the EB Games around the corner. He's short 8 Halo 2 CE's, so he's expecting angry villagers with torches.

I schmoozed up to him, told him it was okay if I didn't get my copy, I could wait the extra day or so. He looked so thankful and was like, "yet that won't save me from the million other guys that are going to rip my innards out."

Shouldn't be much fun. It'll be cold, and I really don't feel like fighting with the kids for playing time at the few demo machines set up. I'll bring some reading....

I wish I could say that I was going to some big gathering, but I'm going at this whole thing with the "lazy-boy" approach...overnight shipping Wink

Right now my copy of Halo 2 is somewhere between Texas and New Jersey, and (at least according to FedEx tracking) should be at my house by the time I get home from work tomorrow. Very Happy

Madness. For real.

So, a report from EB Games' Midnight Madness Promotion in Brookline, Mass. It wasn't as bad as I expected, although much of the experience felt rather surreal. The store opened at 11pm Monday evening. I got there right around then so I could get as low a number as possible. There was no madness amongst most of the crowd. It's basically what you would expect - young males mostly of high school age, waiting for one of the most anticipated video games of the year. While energetic, everybody was pretty well-behaved (I know that comes across as patronizing, but I don't mean it).

I brought a book to pass the hour. The security guard walking around is carrying one of my favorite books of all time, EB White's The Once and Future King. I mention that to him, thinking he might be into the Arthurian legend. I recommend The Merlin series by Mary Stewart, mentioning that Merlin, in this series, was more of an engineer/scientist than wizard. Big mistake. The madness wasn't in the myriad fanboys waiting around, it was all in the head of the security guard - I'll summarize what followed:

1. Merlin existed and was a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci. Apparently there are individuals out there with abnormally long life, and Merlin was one of them. See the Book of Genesis for examples (didn't Adam live to 900 years old or something?)

Okay, uh, hmmmm....

2. There are three arks mentioned in the Bible. Off the top of your head, you'll probably get the two I got: Noah's ark, and the Ark of the Covnenant. The THIRD ark is the Garden of Eden. AND we know three of the officer's names: Jehovah, Science Officer; Satan, Engineer; and, Lucifer, Security Officer. You see, we are not of this earth and these three beings planted the seed of life on this planet. This is also hinted at in Genesis (and I'm paraphrasing big time here) where the Lord works for 6 days and rests on the 7th. Well, if you shift the meaning of 'day' into planet, and realize that a space ship approaching our system would land on Pluto first, that makes our Earth the 7th planet, or the 7th 'day'.

The environment of Hell is much like the atmospheric conditions of Venus.

Uh, okay, look down at the ground and don't make any sudden moves. You don't want to startle this guy. I'd laugh, but honestly, I'm a little scared.

3. Our predecessors had technology we're only beginning to discover. Take, for example, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Two cities destined for destruction because of the, um, atrocities being done there. What leveled these two cities? What turned Lot's wife into a pillar of salt? Extreme heat. That's right, Sodom and Gomorrah were taken down by a nuclear bomb.

I steal a glance at my watch. It laughs at me. The second hand starts ticking backwards.

4. The Book of Ezekiel contains blueprints for a spaceship, which is shaped like a shuttlecock with a dome covering the wide end. Scientists in the USA have made a replica.

Older man drops by to wait with his son. Listens for a second. I desperately give him the 'save me' look. He keeps his eyes on the ground and manages to walk away. Dude! I gave you the signal! Aw, geez...

5. Dinosaurs, if you track their evolution had they stayed on this planet and developed, would have lost their nose, had almond shaped eyes, two slits for nostrils, and a small mouth, with long three-fingered hands. Yep, these are our friends you see coming out of UFO's - apparently they are spies from the Pleiades system. Beware.

Paranoia sets in. I begin to entertain the thought that the security guard is normal, and I'm the total whack job. Someone comes up next to me - I look, and THANK GOD, it's Ensign Jennings of Team Chowda! He's come to rescue me. I say a polite farewell to the security guard, and Jennings and I talk of more normal things, like AI constructs from the future invading web sites in the present.

We can't get out of here soon enough. I finally get my Halo 2 Collector's Edition (side note: anybody else surprised they just stacked the two DVD's right on top of each other? Potential for scratching during shipment, if you ask me). I wait for Jennings to get his, and we bolt out of there. I get home and throw the game in just to see if it works, and yay, it does. Playing will have to wait as I need to go into work the next morning. Hope to see you on XBL.

O M G,

IronchefMike,

That is the funniest thing I have read in a while. The only excitement at my EB games was that they let some Firemen (with their truck no less) go to the head of the line. Nobody really minded, its not like those guys are getting rich protecting our hides.

They did fire up the siren as they left the parking lot. I made a joke about ninjas on fire and got a little laugh.

That's not right - polite society demands that the old dude save you in that situation.

Great report, though.

As for me, I got home from work at 5:45, ate dinner and went to bed at 7:00. Then I got up at 11:00 and went to the local Gamestop at about 11:30. There were only 30 or so people already in line. By midnight there were about 100 or so (so I came at the right time). I was able to get home and play for about an hour and a half (I made it through the first scene of the campaign and a little of the second on Heroic) before crashing out at 2:15 so that I could get up this morning.
