A theory regarding Entry #38

Alex's story about criminals being executed in the forest was very disturbing. At first glance, there is no known reason why this story would be told. However, I can think of two possible reasons: 1. Alex was going to sacrifice Jay in a similar manner.

2. Alex was telling the story of how the Operator came into existence or at least how he came into his current form. The people's limbs were stretched out and were later burned. At the time, similarly to current times, people were buried in suits. This theory could go one of two ways: either the Operator is the ghost of the child who was dismembered, or was a spirit that took the form he is currently seen in after observing the dead bodies during their funerals. They would have long limbs, no face, and be wearing a suit. Since the Operator is a spirit, clearly not from this world, he cannot mimic what he sees completely since he doesn't know how to copy details. However, he is able to mimic the basics of what he sees. Imagine if you were put into a place where nothing was familiar to you. Literally everything you saw there was something you hadn't seen before or even thought possible. You are then asked to draw what you saw. You won't be able to draw the details because the lack of familiarity made you ignorant of them.

I know Marble Hornets is set in its own universe, but this theory ties into other series as well. The idea of this entity taking the form of what it observes in the current time period is present in series like DarkHarvest00 where it first appeared to the Egyptians in a certain way and later was shown as a thin man in armor during the Middle Ages.

Word of god says that #38 was explicitly not an origin story for the Operator. I've always interpreted it as Alex being a dick by taking Jay out into the middle of nowhere and telling a creepy story.

The funny thing about that piece of word of God is that people always only know part of it. They didn't just say that, they explain that it's supposed to foreshadow that there's something weird and bad with Alex. I think you're first theory, that he was gonna sacrifice Jay in a similar way, is the closest, although it's possible he was just planning on shooting him. Either way it's probably not a coincidence that he was going to kill Jay and was telling this story, which if you look at its timeline relation to 49, 50, and 52, it's pretty clear he was.

That's the thing about that phrase "Word of God": What it gets applied to gets treated like inviolable gospel--but you have to interpret gospel.

It's pretty damn obvious that Alex was about to do something bad to Jay. Even the way he decided to add Jessica into it by telling Jay to bring her along next time--a damn dark mood was set.

I do wonder though what was so significant about that particular tree that kept coming up throughout seasons 2 and 3. It's the one that Alex seemed to be implying was where these "sacrifices" took place. Was it just setting the mood (and maybe a recognizable landmark just in case they did get lost in filming)? Or was it one of those things with a significance for which "clues" exist if you are observant enough and also have the technical know-how to putz around with the entries and see what's been loaded onto them?

The story isn't meant to be an origin story, and almost certainly not true in game (for one thing, the Operator wears a modern suit; a suit from the 1800s would look quite different.)My theory is that it's Alex's attempt to make sense of what's happening to him. He might also be trying to warn Jay that he's not in control of his actions, and is a threat.

If the Operator were a ghost from the 19th century, he'd be dressed like this:

Yeah, I felt like it was Alex trying to warn Jay that it was a scary, dangerous situation without just... warning him, theoretically because he can't just turn and say RUN JAY, I'M UNDER THE OPERATOR'S INFLUENCE AND I CAN'T STOP IT!

I dunno--he was wicked annoyed at Jay by that time, though. Remember, he told Jay that the next time they met he should bring Jessica, and when she showed up with Jay, Alex started yelling about how taking the tapes and never mentioning them again "implied not sharing them with the whole world!"
