For your own sanity, please avoid GameFAQs' message boards. Right now, and I'm guessing it's been going on since about midnight EST, the GameFAQs Halo 2 board has been awash with topics mostly spouting that this game is terrible, disappointing, poor graphically, and basically just whining that Microsoft didn't come to their houses and apply rubbing oils to their skin whilst they played.
I implore you to avoid this message board, and indeed any in its vicinity, for the time being. Unwarranted exposure could cause terminal illness, a voracious urge to eat small children, and a propensity to throw large things at people.
This has been a public service announcement from someone who just trudged through hell to get here.

There's quite a lot of complaints on the bungie.net forum as well. HBO seems to be down, so don't know about them.
I read some spoilers without warning on gamefaqs and bungiet.net so, I'll try to avoid them from now on.

Thank you for the warning. I would go there just for entertainment purposes to get a good laugh. I got the game, played about 2 hours of it, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It's a phenemonal production by people who poured their hearts and soul into it. I'm saying this and I've only played a quick Slayer match and did the first level in Single Player Campaign.
I think part of the problem is that people read all of this stuff about Halo2, formulated this "Ultimate Fantasy" in their heads about what it was going to be. When it didn't deliver exactley what they wanted, they hate it. Kinda like buying an environmentally friendly solar clothes dryer from Ebay for $50 and recieving nothing more than a piece of rope in a bag with a slip of paper saying, "Directions: Tie between two trees, Hang clothes wait 1-2 hours for complete drying. Warning: Dry time may vary due to weather conditions." Not what a person is expecting, so they get pissed.
I personally kept my intake of Halo2 info to an absolute minimum. I wanted to make the game my game . I think that is why Halo was so big. People didn't know much, if anything about it. I know I had no idea what it was until I was cruising in a warthog laughing so hard as I struggled to keep it in a straight path. People took it and made it their own. Everyone has a different play style for Halo1, different things they like to do as they play it for the 500th time, and heck, I even name the flood guys...Bazooka Bob, Shotgun Sal, Plasma Pete...
So, here is to the next few years of endless fun..The horizons are expanded and we now have the luxury and pleasure to link up online for even more fun.
So, Here's looking at you kid

Yes, that's one cool thing on Halo1! But it's also a big reason why some people are complaining! They played for 1/2 day and were expecting to use the same tactics and style! You need to adjust and experiment to see what works, just like we all did when we played Halo 1 for the first time!
Honestly, reading some people complaining about this kind of stuff is a good sign that shows Halo 2 is not Halo 1.5 like some people had hoped for.

Around the release of ANY game, avoid Gamefaqs and Amazon reviews.
For some unknown reason, both sites get what i call "the anti-fan"- people who only post to put a game down, but have never played it/don't own it/don't own the right console/love a game it's competing with. See all the GTA:SA fans invading the Halo 2 board, and vice versa.
HBO closed its boards to avoid spoiling the game. THAT is sense.

This is good advice in general. No need to limit it just to HALO 2 talk.

You know, that's a good point. I changed the title to reflect that... and the fact that on its own, GameFAQs is a godsend. The message boards, however.... !puke

Me too... so much so that when I was in line last night and people had opened their copies and were playing them in-store, I averted my head so as not to see it yet.

Yeah, those are what I call "trolls". They WANT you to be upset so they can go 'nyah nyah, MSG3/Metroid Prime/whatever game I say is better than yours!' and you get all upset and red in the face. I say poo to them.

I personally soaked up every drop of Halo 2 info that I could. I chose not to believe anything until I heard it through "official" channels, but I still had a good idea of what sort of things to expect from Halo 2. (Not in terms of storyline, but graphics, gameplay, etc.)
I've only played for 2 hours but I'm very happy so far. I have no idea what there is for those folks to be upset about. It's everything I liked about Halo 1 with some extra goodies piled on. How can you go wrong?
Trolls will always be there, but for best discussion results I highly recommend the http://halo.bungie.org forums when they come back online in a couple days. I would liken the community attitude there to the one I've found here.

Now now! I find that unfair and slightly offensive. *Coughlooktoyourleftcough* I've met a great deal of people on GameFAQs forums with more than a modest level of intelligence. A cess pool it may be, but there are some smarties swimming in the waste, I promise. Just stay away from the boards for the more popular titles, and you should be fine.

One other thing... people who bought Halo 2 and were disappointed by it probably got off fairly quickly so they could go slag the game online. People who are enthralled by it are hopefully still too busy playing to offer counteropinions.

Or are at work, unable to continue playing for fear the boss might not like my TV and Xbox set up in the server closet.

I've wittled down all of my video game sites to one . I'm not saying the user reviews are better (though I think I could). I realized I really like reading the work of professionals more than BobbyFromMarion. I have the same problem with rottontomatos.

That's exactly what all of my friends have been saying. I'm anxious to go over to one of my friend's house today and play it

Now that I have played it, I can officially call myself a Halo fan as well as an ILB fan
